Software updater is no longer in the Apple menu. Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?
As I noted, the count of available updates will show up next to the App Store menu entry in the  menu. If there's no number there now, you don;'t have any updates.

My intermittent issues with mail seem to be solved, and I did not change anything.
For the last 2 days, every mail I sent from the mail.app arrives nicely on the gmail server and is delivered.
Also a ' screen refresh issue ' in smart mailboxes is working as planned.

Has anybody on this forum remotely taken over my machine and fixed things or did I just receive an early christmas present ? :)

Cheers ... McBie

You're welcome. The bill for this work should arrive within the next week or so.

Airdrop

Well, I spoke too soon.

Airdrop crashes Finder. If I repair permissions via disk utility, it will work once. If I try and transfer anything else, it crashes again. Repair permissions, repeat if necessary. What is it they call insanity? Continually repeating the same action and expecting a different result. After the last repair permissions attempt, Chrome web browser started producing a kernal panic every time it started. I removed Chrome and reinstalled, the kernal panic disappears. Disk Verify is producing no errors. So... I spent the afternoon and did a clean install of Yosemite and a time machine restore and so far, the only thing that doesn't function once again is Airdrop.

As much as I wanted handoff, it is not supported on my mid 2011 Mac Mini, even though initially it looked like it was supported. Oh well, at least I can answer my iPhone.

Bill

Airdrop seems to be missing from my wife's iMac but not from mine. Both have Yosemite. I've tried a Spotlight Search but no luck.

Yes, I posted in that thread. What I said and chscag said are the same. TM backs up the operating system, but is NOT bootable. You can restore the OS from TM, but the machine has to be booted from something to do that. CCC can make a bootable clone, from which you can both boot and restore.

I guess I'm a switcher by definition. I've been using MacBook Pros for years but have always run Windows in Bootcamp. This time on my new MBP 13" (n-r) I decided to stick with just OSx. I have Yosemite running. No complaints so far. I like the Notification Center. The only app I miss is called SNS-HDR, which is (IMO) the best HDR software out there, and it's free. But it's Windows only. Shame.

I installed a 512GB SSD and moved the HDD to the SuperDrive bay with a Data Doubler. Now I'm thinking of replacing the stock 500GB drive in the Data Doubler with a 2 or 3TB drive. I'm into photography and storing RAW files takes up lots of space. Photoshop works the same regardless of OS.

I could become a Mac-o-phile after all. :)

I ran Windows in Bootcamp on my first iMac. I found it a pain 'cos Mac had to be closed to use it. When Apple replaced iMac FOC after 3 months I tried VirtualBox and loaded Windows XP on it. I only need it for some music writing software and to operate my Fujitsu scanner. The beauty of it is that you run VB from OS X. Flash drive has to be ejected so that it automatically appears in Windows to save work. When Windows is closed flash drive reappears in Finder. I wouldn't go back to Bootcamp now.

Okay I understood from your post that it wasn't necessary to have both. Anyway a number of people have discussed this issue so, hopefully, we all know where we are now. I am constantly amazed by the number of my friends who don't even bother to back up their files.

I don't mind the "flat" look, but the icon color choices are garish. Especially the folder and Finder icons. Thankfully LiteIcon is compatible with Yosemite.

And that iTunes icon... what's up with the red? I'll be fixing that back to blue...

Forgive me for asking again. I can't find my last post on Litelcon. I've downloaded the icons as a single image but don't know how to replace red iTunes icon with the blue.

Do a Get Info on the icon. Click the icon in the window. Command-C (copy)
Do a Get Info on iTunes. Click the icon. Command-V (paste)
You'll probably have to authenticate. Input your password.

Yosemite issues

It will provide hours of fun with a beach ball if that rocks your boat. I had to remove Snapz Pro as that is a known problem as is Audio High Jack. After about 5 days Spotlight might have rebuilt itself and settled down. Turn off the silly, memory expensive and unhelpful transparence feature as it does not improve the GUI or make it look any nicer - it just makes you think there is a problem with screen burn. If you want your text messages popping up on your monitor fine, but I don't. Kind of refreshing look otherwise.

I installed Yosemite 3 days ago and I have been in 3 days of **** ever since. Mac Mail just hung up for well over an hour. My computer crashes every time I put it to sleep. I've begun to shut it down now when I won't be using it for awhile, so that when I do want to use it I stand a better chance of being able to do so within 5 minutes. It is just so slow...

Because I no longer have the Apple Id that I used when I purchased this Mac Book Pro, I am no longer able to update apps like iphoto so that it works with yosemite.

Oy just very frustrated

Definitely underwhelmed by the prospect of installing this upgrade........or is it an "update"?

It peeves me that in order to have the latest product, I have to put so many of my apps on hold waiting for updates or worse upgrades. get further ring-fenced by Mac - NO! IDON"T WANT an iPone! I like Android!

eventually I suppose I have no option - I must confess though I REALLY miss Snow Leopard....

Nobody is forcing you to upgrade or update. If you like Snow Leopard, use it. If you like Android, that's ok, too.

I suggest to wait until one or two updates are available. I like it but there are all kind of things that you have to change the settings for.
Also check all apps and tools for compatibility (roaringapps.com for example),
further do not install apps that inject kexts, they will run only when you set developer to 1, which is very unsafe because it allows all unsigned kexts. Wait for updates that either do not use kexts, or have signed kexts
