I do basic stuff on my MacbookPro. After the Yosemite download, everything has slowed down somewhat. Sometimes clicking a link to an internet site, it freezes up. Mail (via Sky) takes an age to download - it used to be almost instant. All in all, I would go back to where I was if it were possible. Is it?

I have an iMac. Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Word and Excel programs do not work well with Yosemite. Microsoft customer support person told me that they recommend reinstalling a previous OS version, until they provide an upgrade for their Office programs. Other programs, including Firefox and Google are working fine.

Read the posts just above yours. Unless you made a backup, returning to your previous version of OS X is not possible without completely wiping your hard drive and reinstalling the older version of OS X. Without a backup, that will result in data loss.

Yosemite

I downloaded Yosemite a week or so ago and so far, so good. Have not noticed any problems with it but one thing I have noticed is that my iMac now connects to my wireless router a heck of a lot faster than it did with "Mavericks"!! Anybody had the same experience?

Microsoft Office 2011 is working just fine here with Yosemite. It's actually faster than Mavericks. I have no idea what you're referring to by "do not work well". And yes, Microsoft has promised a new version of Mac Office (2014) but your guess is as good as mine as to when it will be released.

There is nothing wrong with using Word and Excel ( Office 2011 for Mac ) on Yosemite.
I use it everyday and have no issues at all.
My suggestion is to ensure you have the latest updates for Office 2011 installed.

Upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite which took about an hour to complete.
I still have Adobe CS3 (yes its old), and most of the apps failed to load, complaining about lack of Java 6.
I sourced Java 6 from Apple's download page, installed it and now they are working again!
A few other apps needed upgrading to newer versions e.g. VLC Player, Komodo Editor, and iPhoto. The rest was fine. The only app I cannot get working is Boot Picker, I have the latest v2.2 and that still does not work. There is a replacement called rEFind which make help to add visual boot menu at startup. Not installed yet...

I couldn't care less about the looks except I hate that Apple spends so much time on it rather than programming functionalities that work all the time.

The new full screen function of the zoom button (green next to yellow next to red in upper right corner on the menu bar) probably took a hundred thousand hours to program and is the dumbest feature I've ever seen them come out with. I almost always prefer to use the whole screen but I like using menu bar, too.

Confirmed today: middle of next year (Outlook 2015 available today), public beta in early 2015.

Yosemite observations

Observations, fwiw:
The port for (at least) one of the smtp servers I use changes on its own. Have had to reset now several times.
I'm glad to see scheduling of applescripts in Calendar has returned as I did not care for the rigamarole of automator.
Several (not all) droplet scripts acquired splash screens which had not been selected before.
The desktop icon of some Applescript aliases went generic.
I seem to be clicking more. To drag 'n drop a website from the Safari address bar now takes 2 clicks. The favicon of the website doesn't load till you click in the address field and then I also get the faves dropdown. I could do without that.
Personally I don't care for the flat look, and I noticed that distinguishing the edge of a window against the background of other open windows fails more frequently when I'm working fast.
At least it didn't break my scripts, which every upgrade seemed to do while cats.

The flatness is going to take some getting used to but overall I like it so far. I upgraded my mid 2011 Mini this morning and had no problems. All of my software seems to function properly including some heavily customized weather forecasting software.

Bill

what weather forecasting programs do you use, I am a severe weather storm chaser and switching all my computers to apple....

So far, no problems. As with any new os, there are a lot of visual changes. I personally don't care for all the "flatness." In my opinion, what made apple stand out for so long was the uniqueness of the visuals. It seems like with each update, some of those cool things go away. Display seems flat and lifeless. As far as the new features, I haven't really used any of them yet.
Yes I see what you and many others are saying about the display an UI in general perhaps it was all a cunning plan by Apple to get us to update to the 5K 27 inch iMac. It's just gotta look better on that.;D

IS there any reason why I should upgrade? I didn't upgrade from Mountain Lion to Mavericks because there were some things I saw on a friend's computer that I didn't like, and I am very happy with Mountain Lion. However, I wondered if for security reasons I should upgrade. My niece tells me that her Mac has slowed down considerably but I think it is about 6 years old. Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Installation of Yosemite was smooth. I have been using it for the last 14 days -- no problem.
I love the new feature of SMS and Phone calls from iMac. Being 70 years old,iPhone lying in the bedroom and I working in my study pose no problem.
Hands-off feature will not work if you bluetooth hardware is less than ver 4.0.(saw the details in the System Report by clicking Apple Icon > About This Mac > System Report)

Well I am wondering when the a patch is coming out. There is so many bugs overall that its like a alpha version of Ubunut.. Half baked by a bunch of kids..
Safari is so bad off and un-dependable I have been moving everything to Firefox and thats bad.. iTunes barely works correctly. Half my album art is missing and it seems to lock up iTunes trying to download replacements. I could download the artwork my self as a work around, but with about 70GB of music, this isnt happening. I cant imagine those with 3 or 4 times more music then I having to deal with this.
Also shutting down does not always work. I have to pop open terminal and shutdown or restart from there.
Then there is the disappearing network connection. For some odd reason, every now and then the internet magically disappears and despite the connection showing to be good, it just doesnt work. Its like the connection is alive, but all the data packets are giving me the middle finger. So IDK..

Just really hope apple gets a bug fix out soon. Reinstalling with all my work files is just not an option really.

Yosemite Freezing

I installed Yosemite. On re-boot the startup screen froze. I then rebooted in safe mode. After some time I got a screen to view. Apple care immediately told me to delete McAfee Anti virus, which I did. Working fine.

Installed without a hitch, running fine with no problems noted. Macbook Pro mid 2012 seems to be snappier, more responsive.

Yosemite nightmare

Yup, I installed it on my mid 2009 MacBook Pro (13" 2.53 GHz w/4 GB 1067 DDR3). What a great unit........well, it used to be. It's slower with Yosemite, and what they've done to Mail just stinks. I didn't like the changes to Maill for Mavericks but this is too much (wish I'd stuck with Mountain Lion). I'm doing mail on my Kindle (have a keyboard/case) because it's faster and simpler for multiple addressing. Enough is enough. I'm off to the Microsoft Store next week to find out when the new version of Yosemite compatible Outlook will be available. You should add capabilities to applications, not take them away. The ground around Steve Jobs grave must be rolling like an earthquake with the way Apple is screwing up (Yosemite, IOS 8.0 - I'll wait about 8.1).

Unfortunately we also installed Yosemite on the wife's mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro. Her internet connection would drop every 15-30 seconds. She couldn't do anything and a trip to the Genius Bar was a waste of time. We finally could keep it going after we turned off Bluetooth........good bye wireless speakers and streaming to the big screen.

Flattening the displays is the least of our worries, however, they didn't have to completely squash them. I consider Yosemite the Vista/Windows-8 of Apple.

I Wouldn't Buy Yosemite

Yosemite installed as expected on my MacBook Pro (2009) and Mac Mini, as well as my girlfriend's MacBook Pro (2013).

I like the dark menu bar and dock, although some items on the Menu Bar nearly disappear, such as icon for Time Machine. Ya gotta know it's there to use it.

The dark menu bar and dock option is the feature I like best.

The Calculator went from great in Mavericks to rotten in Yosemite. It took a while to stumble onto the icon for the calculator. My first thought was the icom was for Calendar. The icon looks more like a calculator you'd find on an accountant or bookkeeper's desk, not a personal calculator as it was in Mavericks. The Basic option for calculator doesn't have memories. The Scientific option is overwhelming just to get calculator memories. I presume the Programmer option will make programmers happy.

I've turned off and disabled Notifications, don't use 'em.

I've turned off and disabled iCloud as much as I can. Storing my information and files in the cloud where I have no idea who can look at it is not my idea of safe personal computing practice.

Synchronization is turned off too. Each PC (Mac & Windows) I own or use at work, is different. Each has its "personality", such that, I can easily recognize which PC I'm logged into during a Remote Connection or Screen Sharing session. My music is one PC (personal computer). Pictures are on one. All are backed-up on Time Capsule.

The most taunted features over the last few Operating System releases I've turned off for security reasons or it doesn't pertain to my use of personal computers which is why I would not buy Yosemite, and for that matter, I would not have purchased Mavericks.

Leopard was installed in my MBP, I liked Snow Leopard upgrade very much. Snow Leopard was the last OS I liked, and I believe had to be purchased.

I skipped Lion and Mountain Lion because of the abominations made to Contacts and Calendar. If I knew the abomination made to Calculator in Yosemite, I would have skipped it.

One very good feature of Yosemite is switching users is noticeably faster than Mavericks. Thus making Yosemite useful on a multi-user platform.

Overall, I feel like I'm loosing my PC and gaining a very big and heavy iPhone. Dependence on the Internet is not Personal Computing.

From the days of CP/M,
Bernie
