So who has Yosemite Installed? Whats your thoughts?

Well I finally installed Yosemite on my 2007 MBP. So far the only problem I've encountered is when I tried to enable Trim. It told me to reboot for the changes to take effect. On reboot my system hung and I ended up having to reinstall the OS.

EDIT: I am having the wake from sleep issue . . . only recourse is hard restart.

Having to mess with kexts now makes enabling TRIM a risky endeavour. I'm sorry to hear that you came out on the bad side of that risk.

Yeah, this is a bad one that seems to be at least moderately spread. It's bad enough that I make sure everything is saved before I put my Mac to sleep. I really hope that this is priority number one for 10.10.1.

I don't mind the "flat" look, but the icon color choices are garish. Especially the folder and Finder icons. Thankfully LiteIcon is compatible with Yosemite.

And that iTunes icon... what's up with the red? I'll be fixing that back to blue...

If you're a Brit, you should love red. Your royal family has certainly, implicitly, suggested that it's the way to go.

I've noticed an issue specific to Safari in Yosemite. Since Netflix now plays through an HTML5 based player thanks to Apple's inclusion of EME, MSE and WebCrypto in Safari, I can play Netflix video without Flash in Safari. However, that means that, to play video on an external monitor, I need to play it through an HDCP compliant device which my external is not. Instead, I'm greeted with this:



I can't seem to find a Flash fallback so I can't watch Netflix on my external monitor (which is not Apple's fault but rather, a consequence of installing Yosemite and trying to use Safari).

I might be the only one but I really like the flat look. This trend to flat design and vibrant colours is great (hence why I love Google's material design and the flatter look of iOS 7/8).

I don't mind the move to flat myself, as long as it's done right, and I'm in the camp that believes iOS 7/8 was in fact done right. But Yosemite? Well the toolbars and the folder colors are my only real gripes. What really helped with the toolbars though was to go into Accessibility and enable the "increase contrast" option. The buttons look MUCH better as a result. The only downside is that this automatically enables the "reduce transparency" option, which solidifies some previously translucent UI elements, but that hasn't really proved to be a big deal for me. I'm looking forward to Flavours being updated for Yosemite support. I haven't used it before and haven't used any skinning/theming packs for OS X since... I guess 10.4 or 10.5, but I really like a few of the existing themes they have available (there are a few that are more Mavericks-like but still inspired by iOS 7/8) and am confident I'd prefer one of those over the existing UI in Yosemite.

I hadn't ventured to Flavours' website until now and my first response was "oh no, why would you led with a wood styled theme as the primary screenshot on your website." Then again, I'm all about minimalism so theming is really far down my list of required fixes for Yosemite.

LOL! Yeah, the wood thing is a pretty lousy idea. Fixing the UI is a requirement for me though, and if Apple won't do it, then I'll rely on something that can. Here's a couple I like a lot that aren't tacky:

That's a good tip, thanks. Reducing transparency for me is no big deal as I don't like it anyway. And speaking of Flavours, the new version should be ready for download soon according to the developer.

Those aren't bad. This one though...why? Just why? I like this one though - prepare to subject your ideas to a terrible design in high definition.

Just switched to Yosemite this morning. It's only been a few hours and I am strongly regretting it

First, the 'new messsage' window in mail was the width of 4 computer screens with no way to shorten it (clicking on the right corners and dragging back didn't work). I had to delete all my signatures and re-type them (cut and paste didn't work). That was two hours of wasted time, as I have a lot of long signatures for standard emails I send out.

The biggest issue is that some. Just some PDFs open as invisible opening with Preview.. I just see a faint outline of the PDF, and I can close it by clicking on the top left of the silhouette. I tried printing one and scanning it but scans again to an invisible frame on my screen.

I've had to restart my computer 3 times today since 'upgrading'.

Is it possible to switch back to Mavericks? I need to be able to access PDFs. I can't work at all without them. I'm opening with preview and refuse to download Adobe Reader (that opens up another set of problems I had with it previously this year).

You can simply wipe your HD clean and reinstall Mavericks. Note though that this deletes all of your data so backup all of your content first.

If you go this route, you'll have to re-download Mavericks from the App Store (check your purchases). Once this is done, reboot and use Disk Utility to erase your hard drive. Again (for the purposes of stressing this point), this will delete all of your data. After you've completed that, close Disk Utility and continue with the Mavericks install.

Well, I'm not sure but considering Yosemite was the first user tested beta of a new OS I can't remember so many complaints and problems with any previous release. Apart from a screen mirroring issue to which I have found a workaround my instal of 10.10 has been smooth and runs with no problems at all.
However I don't use Apple Mail or Safari. I found both of these apps to be flawed back in OS X Lion and revisiting them in Mavericks and Yosemite has not changed my opinion.
I have not had any functional issues, eg waking from sleep and all my 3rd party apps work perfectly after a few necessary updates.
The native apps still work as they did before albeit with a few visual changes so I am surprised at the number of "since installing Yosemite" posts. Maybe it's just that people with no problems don't post threads on this forum.

Thanks for this. Seems to have just been a temporary thing. I didn't even restart again (as the problem was occurring fresh after a restart as it was). Seems to have just went away on it's own. Really hoping it stays that way and hopefully I don't have any other issues with it. Yesterday was just one of those days where nothing seemed to be running smoothly. Just one of those days!

Have to disagree with you there. We always see a huge backlash of user issues after an OS X release, and this one is no exception - except it might be a little more heated than usual since the visuals have changed so drastically.

The problem, in my opinion is that Apple makes it too easy to upgrade. They don't do enough to caution users about the dangers of adopting a new OS release early - and to top it off, it's free, so people just fly right through the install without thinking twice.

Software Updater and Skype

Installed yesterday so far so good but I noticed private browsing is gone in Safari and Software Update is gone under the .

I really miss the software updater. It seems that you have to go to the App Store to find out if there are any updates. Or is there'd another way?

I also can't get Skype to work. It won't connect. It works fine on my iPad.

You can see if they're available from the  menu. If there's an update available, there will be a badge with the count next to the App Store listing in the menu.

Software updater is no longer in the Apple menu. Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?
