Well at least that proves that Apple was the source, but not that it is indeed the final design.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
If it was going to be the final design (which is highly unlikely), it most certainly won't be now :D

I just realised something; if it does solely use micro sims, I (and quite a few other people) can't get one if we don't want to be stuck with O2/at&t.

And I really hope that isn't the final design, it generally just looks like a knock-off iPhone. Hopefully the final design will be a unibody aluminium one :).

I just heard that Apple Legal Department request them return the prototype, so I guess either Apple let it happen purposely to see the people's response, or just another mistake. But anyway, I think it looks nice but does not much like Apple.

I really don't understand the draw of a front-facing camera for video chat on a phone. I kind of see it for self-photos, but not for video chat. Can you seirously picture yourself holding a phone out in front of you for several minutes to do video chat . . . in public even? Have you ever seen anyone do it with current phones that have front facing cameras? It just seems silly to me. A computer, definitely. iPad, okay maybe. A regular phone, nah!

LOL, wait. So you think it's normal to pose for yourself with your phone's camera like a dork, but don't understand the notion of setting your phone down on a dock of sorts while you're in a cafe, so that you can video chat with a friend, business partner or potential client while you're chillin' ? Who said anything about holding the thing while chatting ?

Agreed 100% Nokia is big on the whole front facing Camera they have been installing them in the N series phones for at least 5 years, I have owned several and have never needed it. Heck I don't even use the camera in my MBP I don't think I have ever even used iChat.

A camera in a cellphone is just that, If you want high quality pics, Go out and buy a Nikon.

You guys are UNBELIEVABLE ! These sorts of statements coming from people whom praise Apple for creating some of the best convergent audio/video devices on the market, makes ZERO sense ! lol Hey, I have my fantastic camera, but there are actually times when it's not possible to have it on me, or that I simply don't feel like taking it down to the local pub or cafe. And so just because YOU don't use the camera on your MBP, means that the rest of us don't use it either ? Really short sighted way of thinking, no ? There are plenty of people whom chat with family using iChat or Skype here and elsewhere. And guarantee that they outnumber those whom don't.

Well said. And I think it applies to an ipad camera too.

Wow. Really ? How is it even possible to think that ? Your iPad is in its dock, and you get a skype call from nana... she wants to see her darling grandson's face.. "sorry nana, the iPad doesn't have a camera". Again, really ? Or are you hoping to see an external camera peripheral, so that you can lug even more wires and garbage with your ULTRA portable and low profile iPad ? lol come on dude.

Totally agreed. Not to mention how awkward it would feel to be videochatting on a phone in public

If you're shy.. that's your problem. Not everybody gets bottled up like that. I could care less about what people think or how they see me. I could care less about being stared at, either. I usually make goofy faces at people whom stare, unless it's a hot girl, which in that case, I'll just throw er' the ol' bedroom eyes glance.

All these things you guys brought up pertain to your personal feelings of awkwardness in said situations and say nothing to the actual convenience which a camera would hold for people whom don't feel as you do.

As for people such as myself, I'll say one last thing. I'll probably catch a bit of flack for this, but that's ok... Since having looked at the 'abilities' of the big iPod Touch since it came out, I've been saying that I'd never get one, because I didn't see the need for it. however, I've now been in a few situations that have made me say to myself that the iPad would actually be the ideal thing to have in order to show my photo portfolio to potential clients or employers/business partners.

Ok, I can live with adding limited USB functionality via a dongle, and I can possibly even live with the grudgingly slow transfer speeds (I think) of photos from my camera to the iPad via direct connection *because the geniuses at Apple think that all photographers use SD Cards in their camera's for some reason* But if I'm going to get an iPad, I want it to have the functionality which it is capable of handling, and which it will undoubtedly have in a future iteration of the hardware. And at the very least, I'm talking about it having a camera for video. Last point, what does anyone whom isn't going to use it care for ? It won't be in your way or hinder your performance abilities ? And I seriously doubt they'll charge more for this hardware change, either. And even if they did, it's not like you guys aren't used to paying an arm and a leg for Apple quality products.

People will do it now solely because Apple will make it simpler and chic. Mark my words on this.

If this is real. I'm still a sceptic about it.

As am I….and I'm less than convinced with all the "proof" that's supposedly out there that it's real. NY Times says there are reports that Apple Legal has contacted Gizmodo, Gizmodo says Apple has contacted them about wanting the phone back….yet nothing officially from Apple…no "real" proof.

To me…it's like…"My cousin's boy friend's neighbor's father-in-law says that they heard from Steve Jobs' gardener that he's real mad about the phone and he wants the phone back."

If it's real…you can be assured it is. In order to have them hitting the market soon after Jobs announces it in June, they'd have to have the Chinese making them by now.

Or it could be an in-house test design. Lots of companies do it and it could be one of several final working designs and may or may not be the final that was chosen.

Unless you have some sort of exact inside knowledge, all you are doing is speculating like the rest of us.

My girlfriend and I video chat quite often (long distance relationship), so having the ability to do so on the go will be quite welcome :)

Well, it would certainly make the careers of all the aspiring young porn stars that much easier...

Yeah… like Apple is going to come out and publicly say "Yes, that was our prototype iPhone and yes, we lost it." Gizmodo doesn't stage stunts like tearing up a fake iPhone and declaring it real, and pics of this same thing hit other sites before Giz got their hands on it. I also very seriously doubt that they faked a letter from Apple legal asking for it back.

Seriously… anyone who still doubts this was a real device from Apple must also have some great theories about the JFK assassination and UFO cover-ups.

And with the really poor quality of such a ipad camera. Yes 1080P HD camera it is not. Your grandma will be complaining, what is that blob on my screen. "I dunno what that is? Is that a person.?" And I don't think even with her glasses will it make a difference.

I'm not against a ipad camera. I'm just against putting a crappy camera on it just because it is possible. If Jobs had a way of putting a 1080P HD camera on the ipad while still keeping the 10 hours battery life while using said camera all for a resonable price. Do all of that and I'll jump at an ipad camera. But since jobs is unwilling or unable to do all of this I am against ther idea. I say a good camera on the ipad or none at all.

In my opinion of cause :).

Here's another article that confirms it is definately a product from Apple:

iPhone loser 'devastated' over ordeal

It says towards the end of the article that Apple have ordered Gizmodo to return the phone as it "belongs to Apple".....

Robert Powell said:
The bottom line is the guy (who found Apple engineer Gray Powell's iPhone 4G and sold it to Gizmodo) stole the phone. The guy's a thief."
--Robert Powell, Gray's father

What an *******. He's forgetting that his son is the one who lost the phone, it's his son's fault entirely. The guy who found it tried to contact Apple but he was basically ignored, so what was he meant to do?

Hahaha!

now he even has a Wiki page:

Gray Powell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I kinda feel sorry for this guy. Even those it was 100% his fault. He should have been more responsible with the phone. And even leaving it at home if he is going to his birthday at a pub where that is a very comon place to lose your phone, when you're drunk....

But he will always be remembered as the guy that lost the iPhone 4G. That must be quite hard to return to work on the Monday....

Lest you forget, there were a ton of wonderful videos that surfaced from new iPhone 3Gs users ! And now all of a sudden, those great quality vids produced by said phone camera, are now crap ? Come on dude, you can do better than that ! Do you remember the video of the guy who put his iPhone 3Gs on one of those remote controlled airplanes ? It was quite impressive by any portable video camera standard... And I'm sure that at this point, they've got better cameras than that one to put in an iPad. So no, I'm not even close to understanding your logic there. Not one bit.

Stop making excuses for the real reason as to why they didn't include a camera. Of course no one can empirically say WHY they didn't put one in, but it sure as heck ain't because the current camera hardware being used on iPhones isn't good enough.

Devastated? I hope so, if only becasue he deseves to lose his job over this. If that's all he gets he'll be lucky. Apple could tear this guy up for lots of disclosure agreement violations, he'll be paying them his paychecks for years to come. One has to wonder if this phone was even sopposed to be "off the reservation" as it were and if this bungling moron of an engineer wasn't taking it to show his buddies or girlfriend just look like the big shot.
