Invention of the Automotive Air Conditioner

Here's a little fact for automotive buffs, or just to dazzle your friends. The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Maxwell, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946 , the temperature in Detroit was 97 F degrees.

The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.Henry was curious and invited them into his office.

They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car.

They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 F degrees inside, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off almost immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed.

There was no way that old man Ford was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show --

Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls.

Yipes, Montreal and Windsor the two top worst in the country?? I would have never thought Toronto would be down at number 9 but the stats are out. Wonder where in Toronto they did the measuring.

Hi Groove, to be honest we don’t notice it as much here as one might think. I think most of the air pollutants float across from the border…not saying we don’t contribute here, but our enviro laws are more stringent and enforced here. But I, too, was surprised at how well Toronto has done.

I would be curious to know where they did the measuring for Victoria as well and was rather surprised to see it placed down at #13 position.

They’ve cleaned Toronto up a ton. I remember the low hanging smog here years ago, it was horrible, we don’t have that anymore. After they closed the coal fired electric plants it made a massive difference. You can actually breathe here now.

was surprised to see Ottawa ranked worse than Toronto though.

We may switch out our gas stove for an induction in the near future. I used an induction and loved it.

Not much of a surprise if you watch any of the NEWS coverage that comes out of the federal legislature buildings and some of the pollution that emits from many of the politicians...

It seems that those of us out West were led to believe that Ontario used mainly Hydro for generating their power.

And it was the nasty Steel producing cities in that province that burnt coal and caused all the pollution.
And of course Detroit got blamed for a lot of the pollution around the Windsor area... and Hamilton got blamed for all their own pollution because of their steel mills, no one else to blame I guess...

Well Hamilton had/has Stelco Steel, Ive driven through that part of town throughout the decades, and man it's nasty. Real nasty. I wouldn't want to live near or in that area.

We had a couple major coal fired electric plants with massive pipes. One in Lakeview (you could see that one for many many miles) and I think one in the east end. When they shut those down, suddenly, our smog problem was almost non existent. We all thought it was the cars. Im sure they create a lot, but nothing like it used to be.

Not to go down any rabbit hole I'm loathe to go near, Im simply happier to have better air. Its just the condos and congestion now I can do without. I'd like a place way out where I have enough room to go out back and sit with crows foxes and racoons and relax and not have to deal with too many people.

Unfortunately, so would a lot of other people but unfortunately, that sends the price beyond the reach of most and you don't want it too far away from the convenience of having some stores you need or rely on fairly close by, along with your doctor's office and Hospital and of course a good entertainment center.

We have been very fortunate in that we have such a place in a very rural agricultural area that we are very thankful for, along with a very pollution-free clean air area.

Hopefully, you can find your dream area you can enjoy and live in.

Lucky for us those places are probably about a 1/4 or the value of these places we live in downtown. Values have quintupled in the past 15 years since we’ve been here.

Hi Groove, yeah it has been quiet lately. I’ve been busy curating a list of what I’m calling Essential Country songs for a uke group in the U.K. I belong to.
While not really a country fan it has been interesting.

Stick a fork in it, it’s done!

Yeah. This place is hopping well though! I read that when VS buys a place it flatlines. They don’t care about the members. At all…

rp sounds fun. I did a fair bit of time playing in country acts. A long while back.

Hi Groove, question for you…does your drumming style change depending on the number of players in the band? I think of 3 piece bands and their drummers…so Rush, ZZ Top, Police…and Grand Funk.
When I was younger many critics slammed GFR’s drummer…but in later years after hearing and watching their concerts on YouTube I began to think his style was a voice in the band….thoughts?

I don’t think it’s based on the number of players. The difference between rush and ZZ Top should tell that story.

But wait. Someone(s) slammed Don Brewer? Talk about making yourself look foolish! Wow!
