Thanks for adding that additional comment Jake, as reading various other Mac User forums one can get the impression that some of the new Macs with a recent OS cannot be booted from a Backup clone.

They can, but it's a bit more complicated than just holding down the Option key. You have to enter Recovery and change boot drive and set up the owner of the external, as I recall. But it boots, and you can run the Mac from it.

There is one other small difference in that in the Mx Macs there is a tiny portion of storage that is accessed in the pre-boot process and which cannot be put on an external drive. So if that portion of storage fails, the box won't boot, period. But if you think of that as part of the CPU instead of part of the storage, then it's similar to the CPU failing in an Intel Mac.

One last observation with regard to Apple turning the Mac OS into iOS.

I noted that by and large, the Mac OS of today is completely recognizable as the Mac OS of 20 years ago. That's saying a lot. In the world of computers, 20 years is like close to forever. Lots of things about personal computers will change drastically in just a few years.

Do you know what OS ISN'T the same now as it was decades ago? Windows. Have a look at Windows 2000, and then have a look at Windows 10.

Barely anything is the same between the two.

Apples and pears, Windows 2000 came from Windows NT, which was the business OS, whilst the consumer used Windows 95, though both based on DOS it was at this point they diverged, to the point they even formated drives differently. Windows 7 was the initial start of bring both these formats back together, so Windows 10 is based on Windows 7.
