It's really hard to answer your question, obviously 32 bit apps will not work with Monterey, as for the others you would have to check each individually. If they came via an installer package then that should work, but it's possible the installers themselves may be incompatible. Many "free standing" apps will work others may require varied levels of system access no longer allowed due to increased security. Some may offer you an update/upgrade when you try to launch them on Monterey.

Personally I would update everything you can first and resign yourself to losing a few. I know this sounds like a massive upheaval but you do still have the option of installing an earlier macOS such as macOS Mojave the last macOS to run 32 bit apps as you stated in your first post. This should give you breathing space with a mint OS on a new SSD to think about the apps you need to replace while keeping them running in the meantime.

Thanks, Rod. Very much appreciate your advice. A fresh Mojave install on a new SSD would give me some breathing room & I could, at some future point, ‘upgrade’ to Monterey. My wife has it but she uses her Mac very differently than I.

Most of the apps I have are drag&drop rather than installer pkgs.

I was trying to be a bit oblique but I’d better be direct. Most of my software came from torrents with sns from SerialBox or KCNscrew. They all work, no trojans, no malware, no security issues.

Look, there’s a lot of philosophy around this issue. But I’m betting Monterey would lock a lot of these out. I’m not a cheapskate but I’m definitely financially constrained in old age. I don’t want to shell out for apps I use once in a blue moon.

A lot of my software is shareware. I’ve sent donations for the apps I use frequently. Some is GitHub open-source.

But there are biggies, too: Adobe Acrobat, FineReader, MS Office, ReadIris, Stuffit are not paid for nor am I interested in being locked into a subscription model for apps I barely use. (Handy when you need ‘em, though.)

The point is, of course, I’ve got too much, used too little.





Some of these cannot be updated on High Sierra, such as calibre. Perhaps some can be updated on Mojave.

I think I've decided to buy a 1TB SSD to replace my failing 1TB SSD. And try to keep a bunch of free space in mind. That way I won't have to buy a new dedicated disk to rejig my current backup system.

Mojave. I discovered I downloaded the "Install MacOS Mojave" application long ago. Trying to open it tells me it's damaged. Trashed it.

AppStore tells me I have it. No option to download again, only to open the installer I don't have.

I'm hoping my Mac shop has a Mojave installer. But...maybe not.

Any ideas how to get a fresh installer. Thanks!

You encountered an expired certificate. I could have helped you if you hadn't trashed it. It wasn't really damaged.

If you are getting an error about macOS application installers being damaged, you'll need to redownload them to get a new certificate.

If you are using a backup system (Time Machine or clone software), you should still have it on your external backup drive. Also, if you haven't emptied the Trash, you still have the installer and can restore it.

Thanks to Bob. I looked in my backups & there was Install macOS Mojave.

The page wasn't so helpful to my situation. Is there a way to 'fix' the expired certificate?

Note I don't have an extra drive available at the moment.

Thanks. Recovered the installer but AppStore is still not letting me open it as damaged. Tried the control-click method but something must be amiss. Does not show me any PKG file. Seems to do nothing. I have not restarted, of course, because this SSD may be living on borrowed time.

Then what you have may not be a full installer, it may only be an updater. Because I've never heard of the method that Ferrar is referring to failing.

The Mojave installer is the one downloaded from Apple. No way to tell if it's an installer or updater because control-click shows nothing. (Wonder why? I have no other files to test it on.) Think this could be another indication of my failing SSD?

File is 6.05GB. Get Info looks like this:

Looks like the real thing. Are you sure that you aren't right-clicking on an alias?

Nope. Holding control-click & clicking on the installer does zippo.

Control-click doesn't seem to open a contextual menu when clicking on any file.

Might have I disabled the control key somehow?

Doesn't seem like any other way to get at the Contents of the PKG.

Hoping my Mac guy has a Mojave installer.

Then something is really off with your Mac's setup. You should be able to point just about anywhere, and at anything (or nothing) and Control-Click and get a contextual menu.

Did you mean to have him press Control and Tab simultaneously? That's how I usually identify/cycle through the apps that are currently open in the background.

If that installer is open in the background, this would show it but it should also appear in the Dock.
