Thanks, everyone. Yeah, no contextual menus, no Spotlight search.

Strikes me this all started to go sideways when I mistakenly installed Safari for Mojave on my High Sierra Mac. Used Safari outside the Applications folder for yonks.

So maybe not all bad disk. Hoping to get a new disk installed this week.

Finally have my 1TB Transcend SSD set up with Mojave. BUT I still have many of the same problems. Slow to wake from sleep, slow for docs & images & screenshots to show up on the Desktop.

Only 40% full... Hm. I may have fixed a problem which wasn't broke.

MBP 16” M1max 32/1tb and bunch of other mac/apple stuff
Is this new ssd in your mbp installed a fresh copy of Mojave or a cloned from your existing?

I wouldn’t say it’s a problem which wasn’t broken. It sounds like that ssd was on the way out and replacing it was prudent.

You started with a 1TB SSD that you said only had "157GB of 1TB" left free, and you upgraded to another SSD of the same 1TB capacity. What happened to all of the data that was filling up your previous SSD, and how did you migrate your data from your old SSD to your new SSD?

Did you put a fresh copy of the Mac OS on your new SSD before migrating any data on to it?

Have you looked through this Web site?:

Put a lot of stuff, application installers, etc., on an external. Fresh install. Basically, wish I had not 'upgraded' to Mojave. High Sierra was more user friendly. PITA that Apple keeps touting Monterey w desktop notifications.

Even though I'm now leaving 50% as free space, SSDReporter just reported a drop to 99% after, what, two months?!?
