That was the only one that I could come up with too Ian.

Funny because I h ave just upgraded from PSE 2018 to 2022 about an hour ago and now playing with it. I can't either afford or warrent getting Photoshop for several hundren beer tokens.

If you want an app closer to Photoshop, try Affinity Photo. It is a few beer tokens, but not as many as Photoshop.

And yes, PSE is Photoshop Essentials. Much easier to type "P S E" than "P h o t o s h o p E s s e n t i a l s." So, because I'm lazy, I typed "P S E" instead of "P h o t o s h o p E s s e n t i a l s" to save keystrokes. As penance, I've now typed "P h o t o s h o p E s s e n t i a l s" multiple times. :p

Oh, I think I see now ?

You mean pHOTO sHOP eSSENTIALS essentially Jake, is that correct

PSE 2022 doesn't turn it black. The work space is a litish grey.

I was on the phone to Apple help line, the central one not the local shop, and the lass on there tols me that they hadn't come across this one before with the screen going to dark m ode (so as not to get confused with P Shop E )

The only suggestion was to upgrade to Monsteray or what ever the name is. So as I asked for help and this is what they say I will see about upgrading.

I don't think that I need any other backups than a current Time Machine? Is that correct?

John,

As you have an M1 iMac, I thought it might already be running macOS 12 - Monterey; but evidently not :).

I have generally taken the view that Upgrading an Operating System (OS) with a fault rarely solves the issue and might make matters worse. I'm not sure whether the seniors on this forum would agree??

One other thing: in an earlier post, you mentioned iFlux. Was that a throwaway comment or do you have and use the iFlux app? I'm just thinking of apps that might be competing with the Light/Dark/Auto settings.

I do have iFlux Jake, but all it does is cut the blue colouring so that your melatonin levels aren't too affected.

But, good idea, I will see about disabling it and see what happens? Now disabled until for an hour. If it goes to dark mode then I'll know it's the culprit. It certainly made a difference when it went off. the screen became much whiter.

As far as Big Sur is concerned, we collected the M1 5 weeks back and it was on a 5 or 6 week delivery so I can only assume that it was loaded before they started the new sales loading of Monteray?

It amaises me these days. This download at 12.13 gig would have swamped the AS400 that used to be the big system at Stroud District Council. That was one of the machines I looked after when I was employed by IBM. Note : - I didn't say worked for

John, all you need to upgrade is a current valid backup of any kind (TM is fine), and the patience to wait for the installation to finish. It rapidly progresses through phase 1 until it says 1 minute remaining. As another website said, that Cupertinian minute is much longer in Earth minutes, maybe as many as 30. Then Phase 2 is lots of reboots, restarts, black screens, apples, etc. But eventually it should end, maybe even successfully!

John, I ran the entire US Navy personnel system on an IBM 8084 with a massive 4 megabytes of core storage! Only two of those megabytes were internal, we had an external core storage device (water cooled, of course) for the other two. Ah, the good old days!

And now I have put it back to light mode

+1!!! And at 80 and 30+ years Mac use and experience, I think I qualify as a senior Mac user. ;)
I completely agree, but I will admit I haven't had much experience with the most recent of Apple's macOS versions.

My experience doesn't go past High Sierra Patrick and not too much of that really.

I have downloaded Monteray, but on the advise here I think that I will wait and see what can be done

I had a thought and uninstalled fLux and did a restart. Yesterday evening when i did a restart it came back up in dark mode. I have just done another restart, after ditching fLux, and it has come back in light mode. So I think that fLux has been the culprit. I will now wait until tomorrow evening and see what happens?

Blimey Patrick, is there a forum about blowing your nose and which tissues to use? It's totally unbelievable.

Thank you for the link. I have had a look at the actual forum, but I don't think I have the wish to sign in to yet another forum? I'm already in 21 of the things!

I decided to re download F.lux again, install and do a system restart and it came up in light mode, so if it is a later version the problem may be sorted, but I will wait and see what happens tomorrow evening.

Meantime, my bed isn't calling, it\s YELLING!

I think that I made it before falling asleep, can't remember?

I dragged myself out of bed at 6-un-a-bit this morning to check the plumbing and whilst I was up I put the screen in to dark mode to see if it would switch back when I finally dragged myself up for the day. It was still dark. So I selected auto and it went to light and now I have selected light mode, so I will see what happens at 16.30?

I don't know if it makes a difference, my old OS X Version doesn't have the Light/Dark option, but I was just wondering If the City or Latitude adjustment in your Date&Time Preference Pane could affect the start/stop times as they do in real life situations depending on one's latitude location???

Just a thought... ;)

Patrick, location would be a factor, if he had set Auto. But the Light/Dark options don't use the local time or location, they just set either light or dark.

Well, it is now 17 40 and well past the auto change time and the screen is still in light mode. So as a ditched the f.Lux and downloaded and installed it again I wonder if it was a down level app that was causing the problem? Because it seems OK now.

This is a screen print of f.lux as it's set now.

You don't need f.lux. Open System Preferences, Displays and on the bottom of the resulting window is a small box labelled "Night Shift." That button does what f.lux does, but it's part of the OS, so no conflicts. Get rid of f.lux, no need for a third party app that might interfere.

I thought along the same lines Jake ( not Ian this time ) but I wanted to see if that was the probable cause and now I'm convinced. So f.lux will be going

Night shift set.
