I just purchased my iMac this month and I'm not that farmiliar about OS updates. I'm use to Windows, where I traditional wait until the bugs are worked out of the new operating system. Is this the case with upgrades in the OS operating system? I really want to upgrade to Snow Leopard, biggest reason, because it is so cheap. Thanks!

Take Care and May God Bless!

Ed
Not sure where you are from but you are entitled to a upgrade for the cost of just shipping.

So... with this 'update' DVD, should my HDD die and I need to do a full install would I have to install Leopard first followed by Snow Leopard?

If your HDD should unfortunately die...yes that's what you would have to do. Leopard 10.5 first, Snow Leopard 10.6 2nd...of course that would only be after you bought a new HDD and installed it!;D

I would go with Snow Leopard though. But, essentially, it is just a 64 bit kernel version, apart from some 64bit supported applications (mail, finder...).

From Linux's point of view, it is huge. But, Apple programmers deserve them. How many of us, can go back and really break our head to compile a new kernel for our cutting edge technology hardware!?

I would say Snow Leopard deserve this price! of course!

PS - our beloved Bertrand has conceded that the 10.6 discs will work as a full install on a machine running tiger if you wipe and install.

So does this mean that as I have Leopard running on a Santa Rosa MBP, that if I wipe and install here, the $29er will be a full install? (Fingers, toes, EYES crossed!!) :)

I've got Snow Leopard! :)

Just popped into the Apple store on my lunch break to pick up a copy.

The salespeople have obviously been handing them out all morning as when I walked up to the sales desk he just automatically took out a copy and rang it up.

Will have to wait another couple of hours until I get home tonight to install it though.

(Time for a new prefix ;D )

That's sort of funny that the Apple employee sees you & without asking just grabs a copy of Snow Leopard & rings it up! It's like people have it written on their faces!!!;D

The box doesn't say a thing on it about being an upgrade, no-where in the requirements does it mention needing Leopard to install Snow Leopard.

Yes, the $29 version is indeed capable of doing a clean install.

I was curious if it was true, I had noticed that being brought up in the "Making the Upgrade" section in the review here:

Review: Snow Leopard Review | Mac OS X - Page 1 | Macworld

(original review link was provided by someone else in the Apple Rumors and Reports section)

It was a little misleading in the way the paragraph was written (stating that the "standard version" of the snow leopard disc etc. etc.) and I wasn't sure if they were really referring to the upgrade version we could buy or the version tiger owners could buy...

Good to know tho as eventually (read: next year) I plan to get a 500 gig drive for my laptop and will prolly do a fresh install rather then a transfer from my existing.

Thank God. Now we can end the upgrade -vs- full version threads. Everyone have fun with your installs! Don't forget to post any funny upgrade stories as well! :)
