Well, that's it installed, as it completes the IOS8 and iPhone 6, feeling.

Ultimately the look is still Apple and I no longer care if we have been dragged
towards a 'windozy' world.

It's working seamlessly despite a lack of ram on both my MacBooks, and no matter
what, I think Apple is just better.

Installed (10 hours, wow) and I have to say. I find it a bit odd. Not off putting but just odd.
The jury is still out at the moment.

The thing is though, it is still the OS I have come to love since defecting from windows (best move ever) so I will get used to the cosmetic changes eventually. Even if it's just because, in time, I will have forgotten how nice it used to look.

At least Apple stayed away from "one OS fits all" paradigm like MS. Yosemite and IOS 8 looks similar but they work with each other while each are specialized for the device they are installed on.

We got a new Dell server at work some months back and I went and looked at it. The first thing I said to myself when I saw it was "Tiles?...Tiles?...On a server?".

Apple rocks!

I must heartily agree. I am stuck with windows 8 at work and I simply cannot put into words the shear loathing I feel for it. Just can't sum it up, I don't think the words exist yet.

We have just been bought out and I hear the knew owners haven't migrated over to 8 yet and still use 7. I never thought I would say it about MS but it will be bliss to have to use 7 again at work. Bliss and Microsoft don't belong in the same sentence. It's a truly illogical concept to have them 2 words side by side but thats the hate I feel for Windows 8.

You sir are correct. Apple, do indeed (and always will) rock!!!!!!!

Do remember if your backup drive has a lot of room, there are many backups stored there. If you remember the date you backed up with the older OSX, you look for that backup and select it and it will restore whatever OSx version was there.

Also I keep Time Machine off when doing any upgrades just like you said. Makes things more simple to figure out which Time Machine backup to have it restore! :D

Indeed, got 1.1TB free on my 3TB MyBook I use for backup..

Well after my first full day of using the new OS, here is my thoughts on it.

Notes application looks like crap, I somehow get the feeling someones display at Apple wasnt color and gamma corrected. Sad as I use this application a ton.
Most all the other application with the exception of Safari and iTunes look very nice.
I expected more translucency like the main application bar.
The Min/Max/Close buttons are fuggly.. And what is with the icons in buttons now? Havent had that in a long time. IMHO these should be replaced with the older ones and it would help the looks A LOT.. LOL
Safari is a little buggy, I personally will be fully moving to Firefox next weekend. IMHO it looks better with the new OSX theme.
Most all the new dock icons look nice except the trash can, its just completely out of place. IMHO they grabbed that icon from a black and white linux icon theme. Same as the folder icons. I have seen them before, they stole those..
I really love the dark mode, but the right click menu should have also matched the dark/light modes.
Over all I like the look of the filesystem browser, its clean and contrast well unlike some other applications.

If anyone ever used GNOME and the older Industrial theme, you will likely love this theme a lot.
If they can make the application bar translucent and fix the ugly m/M/X buttons, as well as the trash can, then visually It will be very nice. But lets hope they focus on the system bugs first..

Check with the developer, maybe they are working on an update!
They have an update, but it now includes Ads and I don't see a way to pay for them to go away. Also, some slight changes to game play which I don't like. In the newest version, once you play a card onto the Ace stack it is done, unless you undo the move.
The older version allowed playing off the stack if needed to get out of a sticky spot.
Which Free Cell is it? I love that game and have a couple installed. Is it on the App store? Can you show me which one? unless the DEV has given up, I bet there will be a upgrade soon.

Mobility Ware is the developer. I was using the 2011 vs, which worked fine until iOS 8. Everything appears to work until you try to deal, the pop up window is blank.

Okay, so now I am curious. If I boot from a bootable maverick usb can I then restore from a TM backup and have maverick back with all it's updates? Just curious because I am sure I will get asked this someday.

Lisa

Be careful there though. That assumes that the following two conditions are true:
1. You did not exclude system files from the Time Machine backup. Some people do if they also keep a current system clone.
2. You'd have to be sure to restore from a point where you are sure Mavericks is intact. Once Yosemite is installed the next backup would contain Yosemite.

You probably realize this. It is mostly for the benefit of others who may not follow how Time Machine works.

Thanks Dennis, Exodist, and Slydude for the information on TM and backups

I will add your info to my growing list of tips I keep for OS X.

And Yosemite just screwed me once again. Nothing would open, for whatever reason, and then upon trying to restart, the menu bar disappeared and nothing else happened.

Maybe Apple hired the interns to write Yosemite. Or, and this is my working theory, the custodial staff took a crack at writing an OS.

You know, I really used to defend OS X and rip into iOS. I've done a 180 here - iOS is pretty solid and OS X has become a frustrating experience in terms of productivity. I've seen more beachballs in the last two days than I did using Mavericks from day one until I wiped my drive clean. And this isn't a third party issue - I'm using the same software (a good portion of it upgraded to be "Yosemite ready") and in fact, I'm using more Apple developed software now than I did even a week ago. There is no way that I can recommend Yosemite in its current incarnation and I think I'm going to simply say "unless you absolutely need to upgrade to Yosemite, stick with Mavericks for now."

I've been poking around on DeviantArt looking for replacement icon sets because I really... really... HATE the new ones. I found a great set that really takes the transparency feature more seriously and the effect is awesome! I also found a theme for Yosemite DP6 that I really like a lot and it works well here on the release version. Here's a screen cap:

screenshot_43.png

Here's the links to what I used:
Yosemite Theme Clearify by cobranail on deviantART
Dynamic Icons for Yosemite: System Icons by ccard3dev on deviantART

This isn't in my screen cap, but I used the Finder, Dashboard, and Trash folders from this set:
Black and Blue Icons 2 by ThreeTrinitys on deviantART

For these folder icons to work well, you have to use a colored or photo background so they take on some color, otherwise they are all white.

Thanks for the great tip LAB! Now I can finally get rid of that ugly red iTunes icon that stands out on my dock like a wing insignia on a Russian fighter jet. ;P

Yeah, I found the correct download from the first link. Just had to search a bit. It's actually the iOS 7 icon group that has the older iTunes (blue) icon and lots more. Anyway, the site is a great place for themes and other icons. Although I personally don't like to use themes, there are some nice ones there.

And Yosemite just screwed me once again.

With respect ... do you not understand that this is just happening to you, and not everyone else?

I have no idea what is causing the issue you're having, but why aren't we seeing identical reports to yours? Some people have called in a few suspect issues that may or may not be user-caused, and I have absolutely no doubt that there is still a need for Apple to work on OS X 10.10.1 (and 10.10.2) ... but where are the masses of catastrophic non-functionality from all of our trusted Yosemite-running colleagues here on Mac-Forums? Where are the villagers with torches in Cupertino? Where are the widespread news reports of angry and frustrated upgraders (over a million of whom were beta testers working with Yosemite for months, and you know full well the media would be ALL OVER a mass failure of Yosemite)?

I understand you're frustrated and I would be too, but having Yosemite running on a half-dozen machines for various people across the spectrum of age and models and just ... you know, not seeing anything remotely like the nightmare you are describing ... I can only suggest that some other factor is at play in your situation.

So Van does not know how to use or install OSX on his MBP? Interesting as he knows very much what he is doing. You are treading on dangerous ground.

Search around the Internet, MANY are having issues and worse than Van is having.

I so far have not had any of the reported issues on my late 2007 iMac with 6GB RAM but I don't go around saying everyone that is having issues is wrong!

Well that settles that. Chas isn't having any problems, so those who are must be doing something wrong. Glad we got that cleared up.

At no point did I suggest that my experiences were universal. And, it is possible that it's not something I did - I like to think I know enough about how to use my Mac that I'd be able to pinpoint the issue after a clean install.

Where are the widespread news reports of angry and frustrated upgraders (over a million of whom were beta testers working with Yosemite for months, and you know full well the media would be ALL OVER a mass failure of Yosemite)?
I think you overestimate how much the media cares about Macs.

I understand you're frustrated and I would be too, but having Yosemite running on a half-dozen machines for various people across the spectrum of age and models and just ... you know, not seeing anything remotely like the nightmare you are describing ... Fair enough - there may very well be something at play. That said, not only do your experiences reflect no more "truth" than my own but much of what I've been frustrated with is and has been experienced by others including the distressingly blurry system font (source) and the inability for Mail to handle known mail credentials for no apparent reason (thus leaving me with the inability to send mail). I'm not saying that I've had no role in this but when much of what I do worked perfectly fine under Mavericks, I'm not the only one to blame.

I guess I'm a switcher by definition. I've been using MacBook Pros for years but have always run Windows in Bootcamp. This time on my new MBP 13" (n-r) I decided to stick with just OSx. I have Yosemite running. No complaints so far. I like the Notification Center. The only app I miss is called SNS-HDR, which is (IMO) the best HDR software out there, and it's free. But it's Windows only. Shame.

I installed a 512GB SSD and moved the HDD to the SuperDrive bay with a Data Doubler. Now I'm thinking of replacing the stock 500GB drive in the Data Doubler with a 2 or 3TB drive. I'm into photography and storing RAW files takes up lots of space. Photoshop works the same regardless of OS.

I could become a Mac-o-phile after all. :)
