Yah the way you just worded that made absolutly no sense to me. I see where you were trying to go with it but you completly contridicted your self. An a Graphite I do beleave Murlyn agrees. They will announce it before its shiping date specifically becuase people have to scrape their pennies together to get it you have to give the consumer a heads up.

A july release date would be great for me. I will have gotten graduation gifts and will have made a pretty good amount of cash caddying so far so I might be able to up to the G5 when I go to college. I know my dad would buy my G4 off of me or help with the G5 if I am short. He started to use iPhoto and photoshop over the vacation and loved it

Ya, I agree.
An announced release for sometime in June July or August would be great.
I sure wouldn't want to have to invest in G4 PB as I go to college, only to have the G5 come out within my first couple months.

I know that if you havae a g4 now, or have a chance to get one....there is no reason to wait for a G5 powerbook. They'll release it probably within a year..maybe this summer...who knows....but it wont' be very usable for most people working with laptops.....I mean..it'll definently be usable....but threre is no sense it not buying a beutiful pb g4 now.....plus the g5 will be insainly expensive...and then the price of the g4 will go down..yay!

Well whenever they come out...it doesn't matter. Cause I'll be using my alu 12" pbG4 for another three or four years at least....and then I'll still be behind...cause I'll probably buy a pb g5 then...so if they come out in may..it'll only be teasing me for a long time....but I guess not really....I don't really need anything else right now...my g4 is awesome...it runs everything I need it to..and more stuff that I haven't used yet...or won't ever use....no problems...I have friends with g3 ibooks...that still don't really have any problems....so...I guess what I'm saying...is that is doens't matter when the g5 comes out....it will come out...it will be awesome....and a lot of people with g4s will be like "man that's sweet, I wish I could have one...but my good ol baby pbg4 still loves me, and I love it...and it can do anything.." ;)

When the updated PBs come out, how soon do the prices for the current G4s drop?

Also, do government/educational discounts usually apply to older generations?

need advice: should i buy powerbook g4 now or wait??

i see that this thread ended quite a while ago but i wanted to get people's opinion....

i'm a print/web designer, and am in need of a new machine. right now i have a blue/white g3, which is really slow, but i simply want to be able to work away from home. i've been looking into buying a powerbook g4 15" combo drive and am on the verge of purchasing one. ... except that i keep on hearing the same rumor about g5 powerbook coming out in june. i really need a new laptop as i'm about to start a new project in a couple of weeks. to purchase or not to purchase, that is the question.

I would say buy at the end of April. From the sound of it, the PB G5 will not be out for quite some time.. probably next year, not this year since I think in about a week or so they are going to release a speed bump for the current Powerbook line, and if I was buying I would buy then. When they do come out with the new PB G5's I always recommend people to get the second generation, not the first of new technologies..

Cheers!

thank you for the information above! i just got another piece of info through AtATgram:

...Faithful viewer FROZEN TUNDRA informs us that AppleInsider now seems darn certain that Apple plans to intro speed-bumped PowerBooks _and_ iBooks in a matter of days. Citing "sources with an unblemished track record," AI claims that, come Monday, Apple will disgorge no fewer than _eight_ "new laptop configurations," and even gives the model numbers of the soon-to-ship bad boys. Assuming those sources keep batting a
thousand, by Monday we'll have two new 12-inch PowerBooks, two
15-inchers, a new 17-incher, two new 14-inch iBooks, and a single
12-inch model to kick around....

i guess we'll see what happens next week!

Yeppers.. now any idea when the new iMac's might be coming out? My grandmother is going to get one.. and Im thinking of having her go with an eMac instead since it doesnt look like a new iMac will be out anytime soon, thus pushing the existing iMac price down, making it affordable for her :)

The eMac is an extreme value, after all it's about the OS. The only thing that may concern heavy or power users is the RAM ceiling of 1Gig (2 slots) -but I don't think that would concern you Grand Ma :)

Hm... I guess I will look more seriously into them then.. Im a power user so it's hard to advise someone to get something small like that :)
