More than a bug

I upgraded to Yosemite yesterday. It is a complete disaster and will not allow me to restore from Time Machine.

I've had pretty much the same problem. I tried to restore from Time Machine, and, at one point, I was told my computer was

• Transferring your Application folder ...
• About 53 hours and [so many] minutes remaining

Of course the only thing I could do is turn off the power. There is no quitting a (Migration Assistant) restore.

Fortunately I had two separate, reasonably up-to-date clones of my 10.9.5 system, one on the internal hard drive and one on an external drive. I am running the internal clone now. I have installed 10.10 on my internal, 250 GB solid state drive, with no additional applications. I'll install applications there one at a time. It will a long process, and I've got other things to do.

That soooooo sucks! Folks think I'm paranoid, but I use time machine AND TWO cloned start up disks!

Just another data point. I downloaded Yosemite without a hitch and other than having to learn some new tricks and desktop things, it runs fine. I have a 2013 vintage iMac. So far I like it!

I mentioned in another thread that I was having a nagging issue with the computer coming out of sleep with an error message saying that the computer shut down because of an error and would reboot. That problem has since stopped on it's own.

For the MOST part, I have no issues with Yosemite, at least none that I can't eventually adjust to.

Am I the only one who thinks Apple has gone to rat sh@t since Steve died?
I upgraded to Mavericks and then restored because my iMac turned into a PC, now I read about how shall we say, uncertain Yosemite is.
I'd sooner pay for a upgrade that works on my iMac than all this free **** that actually doesn't bring much to the party.

NO NO NO, NOT 19 meg free, that's the "logical volume group", whatever that is. I have 260 GIG free. Look at the 1st 2 lines. But thanks for trying.

Regardless, the "computer shut down because of an error" message is back causing the computer to reboot. :-(

I think you missed the main clue as to why you had slow running - you only have 19MB free, the usual recommended is 10% or 50GB in your case.

Chas, He is going a bit far with it but I can show you 1000's that feel Apple has digressed since Jobs passed away.

I do see many things changed and talked to many in the know that say they got rid of ever thing Jiobs did looks wise. Well I for one liked the LOOKS better in the past. My right to feel that way also.

Guys, the hard drive has 260 GIG free, the 19 meg is the logical volume, whatever the heck that means. It ran perfectly fine BEFORE the upgrade.

With the exception of the "computer shut down because of a problem" error, it's running very well. I'm pretty sure the Geniuses at the Apple store would have noticed less than 1/100th of 1 percent of available space on the computer when THEY worked on the machine.

I have an iMac not even a year old. Since I downloaded Yosemite I have a series of operational errors. 1st I can not backup on my external HD (new MyLiveBook), 2nd after the screen goes to sleep upon awakening none of my folders appear on the desk top, 3rd Safari has become unstable, slow to open tabs and erratic in behavior.
I disconnected the power to my external HD and reconnected; resolved the backup issue for a day. As yo the other issues, I'm holding my breath in hopes the Apple people have a fix.
I'm a recent convert from the PC world. (started teething years ago on an Apple Classic with 8 Mb of memory). I very much dislike the MS world and somehow Apple now appears headed in the same direction.

How are you trying to do the backup? What messages, if any does it provide to tell you it isn't working?

The icons should appear immediately. Apple won't provide a fix because it's not broken systemically, it has to be something on your system.

How is Safari unstable? Crashes? Have you tried other browsers to see if it's your ISP or network connection instead of Safari?

I've installed Yosemite and the only problem I am experiencing is with Time Machine. It starts up, but I cannot get to a backup date. Plan to call AppleCare and will report the result.

Otherwise, I rather like Yosemite, particularly the new notifications center (Today view).

Little by little, the wheels are coming off again.

The wifi is dropping out randomly. (Does NOT drop out using iPad)

Time machine no longer performs back-ups. It says "preparing back up" for 1/2 hour or so, then just stops.

Random reboots after coming out of sleep mode.

It was working pretty well for a day or so.

Back to the Apple Store, scheduled for Monday ........... sigh

I really see no alternative to going back to a clean install of Mavericks. I was beginning to LIKE Yosemite.

I see that, although you are a new member you have already clocked 36 posts. I respectfully suggest that you put your MBP's specs in your profile. It's the last item under 'Additional Information'.

I wonder if anybody else who has installed Yosemite has had problems with Time Machine. Yesterday I was in the middle of editing a .tiff document and inadvertently deleted something. I tried to restore the original from Time Machine and found that I couldn't open any of the earlier dates.

I have two Time Machines and today the second one functioned perfectly but I am mystified by the problem.

I have a new external drive on order so that I can install Carbon Copy Cloner. I was advised to do so some time ago. I think Yosemite is gradually settling down for me but it hasn't been a painless experience. At least, if I had had CCC, I would have been able to go back to Mavericks.

Mystified by the Time Machine situation? I spent 36 minutes on hold with AppleCare this afternoon waiting to ask about it. When the remote viewer was installed and I started up Time Machine, it worked perfectly! That's after 7 days of stalls. Go figure!
