I turned TM off again, it was creating a backup every 12 minutes, none of them finished, and in the process created 12 snapshots. Something is seriously broken.

Safe mode tried Patrick and as I have never been able to stomach Dutch custard in a bottle I stick to a good French Armagnac. Much more suppable and enjoyable.

Did you realise that Armagnac predates koniyak by a lot of years, but that conyaque just had a better sales pitch. There are something like 4 HUGE cogthingy manufactures and over 50 small Armagnac distillers still producing a far superior nectar from the south of France  About the same as Blanquette de Limoux which predates that stuff further north, champoo or something and, the Blanquette is about 1/3rd the price for a far nicer fizz.

Off yer high horse John!!

I'm beginning to suspect that Monterey 12.1 created more problems than it supposedly resolved. After the 12.1 update is when CCC and SuperDuper could no longer make a bootable clone for me.

I haven't looked into Time Machine to see if my backups are working right. After reading through your posts, I need to do some digging. Will let you know.

Just checked my Time Machine backups and they appear to be okay. Snapshots made, one for each backup so that seems normal. All viewable from Finder (except snapshots which are hidden).

Interesting and informative thanks John, even if a touch off topic.

Oh, just a quick comment to one of my Canadian pals Patrick ;) (that smiley looks as if it has a halo, just like me?)

But to be back on track, I will be getting in touch with the AppleCare folks, probably tomorrow afternoon, hopefully off out with my RC model aircraft in the morning. So far I haven't spoken to the same person twice and so far it's been Portugal, Ireland and Albania. All extremely friendly and helpful.

I have an Intel Mini running 12.1 and it's making TM backups on time. Another Mini, running Big Sur on an M1 chip, is also making backups. But my M1 MBP with 12.1 stopped on the 16th. I can't decide if it's a 12.1 or M1 problem or just a combination of the two.

A quick google search doesn't look very good for a lot of users :

That is really interesting Patrick. It looks like they have released a real jar of worms here?

I will be asking AppleCare if I can go back to 12.0.1 until they get all of the worms in the jar aligned me-thinks?

John, I'm no expert on this; but I strongly expect that going backwards to 12.0.1 will not be possible.

Going back to an earlier or previous OS is one thing - (although not for you as I gather your Mac shipped with Monterey) - but I've never come across anyone being able to return to an earlier version of the same OS.

But, good luck with Apple, mon ami.

Merci Ian.

It was shipped with Big Sur so it may well be possible to go back, even if it's back to Big Sur?

I'll ask the question this afternoon as it's too close to lunch time to start now and I was out this morning on one of our model flying sites looking at the FOG!

Ask them. It should be possible. But go with their advice, whatever. You just wanted things sorted. Enjoy your fog:):)

Well, after about 1 ½ hours on the phone with a bloke from AppleCare I'm not too sure if I am drilled, bored or countersunk ? But he now has a set of logs and several screen dumps to send on to the Apple engineers and he said that they should be back with more information within 4 working days.

We tried yet another T M backup so he could see what was happening and told me that he had never seen or heard of anything like it before. I showed him, via his 'look at my screen' app and he was surprised that there were so many hits on the problem? Surely Apple MUST know that something is seriously not right?

T M is something that you start, watch for a couple of minutes on the first time and then just let it get on with it? If so then there could well be a huge number of users that could be in for a very nasty shock if they ever have SSD problems or need to recover data.

So the basic outcome of today is that I'm still no wiser at the moment, but it still looks as if it could be a total wipe off and reload depending on if/what the engineers find?

Watch this space, I think? Anyone got any valium they don't need

I'd take a serious look at the articles such as this:
How to install older versions of macOS or OS X
Specifically:
How to downgrade to the OS that shipped on your Mac

You've already put up with a lot more than than you should have to considering it was a brand new Mac model from Apple.

It seems that Mac OS Monterey has some pretty serious screw ups You, and many others it seems, shouldn't have to put up with. What is the point of being on the bleeding macOS software edge if it bloody well doesn't work properly...??? You've already lasted longer than I would have with that Mac and I tend to be fairly patient. 😇

I am sorry you ran into fog with your RC glider.

One of the mantras I live by Patrick is

May the lord give me patience, but for Christ's sake make it quick!

The alternative seems to be to make a 30 mile round trip to take it in to the Apple dhop we got it from, wait several daze for them to maybe sort it and then repeat the trip to collect it. And all from a shop in the middle of Cirencester that has no parking near it.

I'm willing to bet that they wouldn't come, collect it and then deliver it back again

At least with the fog today I came back home with as many bits as I went out with AND no repairs (y)(y)

I hope you took notice of the fact that I did not include such a possibility...

Well, really speaking I always come back with what I went out with.

It's just that sometimes it's arranged slightly differently?

Elon Musk referred to an explosion of one of his rockets before it landed as a "rapid airborne unplanned disassembly." Maybe you have had unplanned disassemblies?

Errrr? I am not sure that they have ever been quite so spectacular as those Jake, but one or two have needed a digging implement to retrieve them from Mother Earth.

But I do believe that our Mr Musk will be concentrating on folk being able to get into and starting his cars on the odd occasion

Anyway, my gliders are always radio and sometimes controlled

This is one I'm building at the moment. ¼ scale DFS Habicht
Habitch small front.jpg

And hopefully it will finish up looking a bit like this, but in red/pale cream

Screen Shot 2020-08-27 at 17.30.31.png

And fully radio controlled!
