I think it was Patrick who suggested Safe Mode, so I tried that. Booted to safe mode, started a TM backup. It ran to conclusion, and free space disappeared from the target drive, but at the end it threw up an error:

Screen Shot 2021-12-26 at 6.08.10 PM.png

I don't know what "your Mac is unlocked" means. I found this in the system log:

021-12-26 18:07:54.575757-0500 Backup failed (104 BACKUP_DELAYED_UNFINISHED_PROTECTED_FILES)

So, somehow TM thinks it didn't finish because some files are protected. But it took up space on the drive.

I give up on it. Apple will have to fix it.

I think that I too was guided through a save in safe mode and also with a test user and they both failed.

I just hope that the Apple engineers can sort it one way or another. In fact they are going to have to fix it and quickly or they will have a boat load of very unsatisfied users!

Yeah, Apple has a serious issue with TM here. I did some searching on the 'net and there are lots of voices about it, even back to Big Sur. What I have discovered now is that the target drive now is showing errors when I tried to use DU to repair it.

Screen Shot 2021-12-26 at 6.20.40 PM.png

That has also been reported by others on the 'net. From what I can see, TM is working until it gets to the close, then errors out and doesn't finish updating the directory for the drive, then leaves the drive with lost space and no way to repair it.

One thing that is curious is that some folks are complaining because TM is now storing snapshots instead of the old way to back up, and others are critical because it DOESN'T store snapshots, which are so much more efficient. So, the various Netizens are all spouting nonsense about it, which then circulates from site to site.

Bottom line is that for SOME M1 users, TM is broken. I've read that backups to NAS works, I may try that just as a experiment. There is also one report that DU can repair the drive if you boot to Recovery, which will be my next try.

What on Earth have I started here??

Until this lot came up I hadn't heard of snapshots? Not that I had delved in to T M at all. (I have to put the space or this thing does '™ ') Can you explain what they are and what they do please. Preferably in language that a 6 year old would understand :wink

I tried the 'First Aid' on the T M disk and it worked after I had managed to convince it that Finder wasn't really using it and it dismounted. It was successful and no errors.

John, if you don't like the little trademark tm, Open System Preferences, then Click on Keyboard, then Click on Text.

On the left are words or fractions under the Heading "Replace" and on the right are what they change to under the heading "With". Looking to the left side, scroll down till you see TM - opposite it o the Right is that trademark "small tm". Highlight it and then Click on the minus " - " and it will disappear.

That's what I did because I never need the small trademark thing, but I do use TM all the time.

Hey John:

We're thinking of awarding you a prize for having started the longest thread this year. Maybe when Jake visits next Spring we'll have him buy you some suds. 🍷 :p

I look forward to that Jake and thank you for the thought Chas!

I thought that I would leave it right to the end if the year so nobody else had chance to better it

This is my best and brewed about 20 miles away so good for the planet with hardly any travel miles and enough Xs too, not like the Aussie stuff

Better still, get it delivered properly

Seriously though. It's going to be very interesting to get the result to this problem.

A quick update.

After a couple more 'chats' with AppleCare it came down to the suggestion of remove all of the non apple applications and try the TM backup. I suggested that a complete clean install may be quicker and easier in the long run. It would get rid of everything migrated from our old iMac.

So the bloke talked me through the erase and reinstall until it was well underway. I finished of the install and tried a TM save and IT WORKED!

Then I ran TM after I put each application back on the system SSD. I thought it would take forever, but as it's now running correctly all it did was add the applications just loaded. I now have pretty well all of the applications loaded and all still seems to be well.

I am still trying to work out why Finder isn't showing things like the Macintosh HD in the left hand coloumn? It doesn't shower the admin user folder either?

Other things like synching my Safari bookmarks from the old iMac and copying my Contacts across are a bit of a mystery too? I have done various searches and attempts at it but nothing so far?

Are you trying to get those items in the Sidebar at the left side of every Finder window? If so, try the following:

1. When you are in the Finder choose Preferences.
2. At the top of the sheet that appears choose Sidebar.
3. Place a check by the things you want in the Sidebar.

Good way to start the New Year John. Do you think we can close this thread now or shall we hang on a bit longer for your next crisis? :rofl

WHAT! With only 5 to the 200?

At the very least I will have to know what a 'New properly working Mac Tall drink... 😇 ' is?

All I have has this eve is a bottle of 'Old Freckled Ken', or should that be 'Old Speckled Hen' followed by a couple of glasses of 'Chatuau Maris le Minervois 2018' and a drop of very nice old Armagnac (none of that northern Cognaque stuff)?

What chirstsis are we on about here?

Seriously for a short while. I have no idea at times where I would have been if I hadn't fell into this pit? So a very Happy, healthy and prosperous 2022 to all, and thank you!

Having read that, and having nothing else to do on New Year's Day but watch the bowl games, I decided to do a reinstall myself to see if that fixed my problems with TM. To review, TM runs, space on the destination drive is taken up, TM ends with no errors but the target drive has NOTHING on it, but space is gone. First Aid doesn't find anything wrong with the target drive. Showing hidden files doesn't disclose anything on the target drive. Examining the logs, I see an error message like this at the end of the TM run:

2022-01-02 01:31:31.256805-0500 Backup failed (104: BACKUP_DELAYED_UNFINISHED_PROTECTED_FILES)

So, I took the plunge, made a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner and then invoked the "Erase All Contents and Settings" from System Preferences. Got the warning that it was going to log me out of AppleID, Find My Mac, etc. Went ahead with it.

On booting, went through the "hello" and setup phase, set up an account and tried TM on a new drive. Bingo! Good TM backup, files show on the target.

Used Migration Assistant to get my stuff back from the clone I had made. Was happy that it all looked so good, until.....

Tried a TM backup. Same results as before, space gone, no files, no way to recover files, same error message in the log but no error from TM. So, it's something in MY files, or MY settings. At least I now have something to work with.

Cue foreboding music...

A couple of hours after I had successfully added my cards back to Wallet (They are not restored from backups for security reasons) I get a cryptic notification that Wallet has been disabled and my cards removed because of the security change to my system. Wha? Tried to add them in again, got this popup:

Screen Shot 2022-01-01 at 11.38.14 PM.png

The Learn More button took me to a Apple page that said my system wasn't secure enough for storing cards because of a change in the security (I didn't make any changes) or because of malware. Ran DetectX Swift and VirusBarrier scanner, nothing found. Called Apple, was told that I had to talk to "specialists" and that they would call me later today. Here is what is curious. I went to the AppleID management site, it lists my MBP as associated with my account and that Wallet is authorized with the cards I have on my iPhone and  Watch. So, one Apple systems says "no" and another says "go." Could be an interesting call.

So, the "fix" didn't fix TM and broke Wallet. The call is scheduled for about 40 minutes from now. I'll report back, assuming I'm not in the erase-restart-recover-lather-rinse-repeat cycle.

Well good luck with it Jake. We don't have Apple Pay and wouldn't really want it so I don't really know what it is or how it works?

I even get upset each time I think about our £ notes being made of plastic now.

When I put the applications back on to the system I had to use my CCC to do it and literally just drag/drop them in to the system applications folder I haven't had chance to try them all yet but the ones I have have all opened correctly. It's just as well I decided to do the CCC or I doubt that I would have had a save for the applications? I still haven't put all of the data back, things like the documents folder. I really want to keep my photos and video on the external disks. I now have 2 1tb Crucial SSDs and I have a hub with 1 USB-C and 3 USB3 ports and another 4 port USB3 hub arriving tomorrow so they should be fast enough for what I need.

Before the reload the failed TM save took over 700gig space on disk, now it's 33.75gig on a 2tb skinny disk so it should have plenty of space. I also have my Photos app on on of the SSDs, soon on both for redundancy, and I want to link it so that when I select it from Applications it opens. I also have to learn how to use it properly as well because I haven't used it up to now!

dinner calls !
