My monitor is broken on my PowerBook, the monitor kinda sinks in on the right side. I'll take pics when I'm not so lazy.

Man, i've seen that problem on display models when i was doing my research on getting an ibook. i got one anyways and i've had it for 3 months and there is no sign of the separation and hopefully there won't be! however, i've seen that problem before and it should be covered by warranty.

is the separation causing problems or does it just look ugly?

I just got home from work/classes and I decided to take a look. Where as I would have never noticed it before, there's some separation just the the left of the iBook logo, right above where the hinge meets the screen frame/border. Nothing noticible unless you were looking for it, perhaps .5mm.

Yah, thanks for bringing that to my attention. It's ironic that I have the Smashing Pumpkins song Perfect playing on iTunes at the moment. :(

Good and bad news....

What a freaking ordeal i swear.

So i get set to bring the iBook to the apple store to swap it out for a powerbook. (willing to pay the $99 fee...argh). So i put the Reinstall cd in to reinstall mac os x. It locks up.... Does not get past the language selection. Try to run the disk utility. Locks up. So i'm like hey... This thing is really screwed now.

So i bring it in and they take a look. They boot from a firewire drive and try. It locks up at the same place. It's screwed! I'm like YAY!!

So i tell them I'm willing to pitch in another few hundred for the powerbook. They say ok and charge me for a powerbook with edu discount minus the total on the iBook.

So i'm thinking...down another $400 but i have a SWEEEETTTT powerbook. I MADE OUT RIGHT??

I get home.... this is at 8.30pm. I open the powerbook. and there's 2 pixels out. Both of them fluctuate in and out. Sometimes there and sometimes not. but obviously defective. ARGHH... I call the apple store and talk to the manager right before they close. And he tells me to bring it in tomorrow and the techs will make a decision.

Personally i know it's there policy that 2 pixels are not a defective product. let alone 2 fluctuating pixels. That may or may not be there.

But I mean... I just opened the box. I was at the registration screen when i noticed. So i put it to sleep right there so they would realize it was literally out of the box.

I'm going pull out some cards tomorrow and try to get them to give me a new one and check it thoroughly before I leave.

:(......I would deal with the pixels if it wasn't straight out of the box ya know????

p.s. the powerbook is SWEET

Personally, it's frightening that Apple would have a policy like that. When I go buy my laptop (whichever it happens to be, leaning towards the Powerbook) I am going to open it in the store and test it. o_o; That may sound ghey and overly paranoid, but I would have a fit if I got home and it were in less than perfect working order. jbsengineer you have a PM.

it's not visible when you first get it, it occurs after you've open and shut it a bunch of times, so they all look perfect out of the box!

Luckily I keep mine on my desk in the open position for the most part. But if it does get worse I'll definitely attempt to fix the issue as one other mentioned above. :doctor:

I think this problem occurs when people are using an external monitor with their LCD/lid closed. Am I right?

Unless you enable clamshell mode w/ Screen Spanning Doctor the iBook will go to sleep upon closing the lid. Besides you really don't want to operate the notbook w/ the lid closed since the hardware vents through the keyboard.

My Ibook is the 14' model and its showing the same signs of warping. So its both the 12 and 14 inch models.

I dont think i have had any problems with the actual screen being bent, i use it constantly for 2 weeks, lots of opening and closing

the only issue i have is with the latch button to open the screen, sometimes it doesnt lock properly and the sleep goes weird

Could someone who's posted with a bent iBook, say whether they have been running it with the lid closed (i.e. with the hack) I was thinking of getting one soon - but will wait a while if this is the case!

First of all. If you buy a laptop of any sort in the store. Have them take it out and check all the pixels. Move the screen around and such. Cause this was an ordeal and apples policy says a few dead pixels are not defective.

So i go to the store this morning. Exactly when they were opening. They had known about my issue because there was a note about my call the night before.

So i put the powerbook on the "genius bar" and they verified 1 stuck pixel. They then proceeded to print out a KB article about how there is 16.9 million pixels and prices would rise if they had to make the screen perfect blah blah.

I was very persistent but not to the point of rude.

I pulled every card I had...

I asked them if they had bought it would they accept dead pixels on an 1600 machine. I told them how much business i send them being a systems engineer at a university. I showed them how much of a loyal customer i have been since a child and how I never have been dissapointed will quality etc. I told them 1600 for a machine that had dead pixels out of the box is frankly unacceptable. I asked them if i were to return it and pay the return fee would they actually sell it with dead pixels??? (answer was yes)

To make a long story short the tech i was talking to called up his manager and agreed to wave the return fee and replace it for a new machine.

We then opened the new one up and verifyed all pixels. I thanked them about 100x and told them apple has yet to dissapoint me. they re-assured me that what they want is to make customers happy.

so right now I'm VERY VERY VERY happy with Apple. i LOVE MY POWERBOOK!!!! and i will be moving to the Powerbook forum soon. Thanks for all your help with everything here everyone.

And i must say if you have the money and debating whether to get a powerbook or iBook... specifically the 12". Go with the powerbook. Such a beautiful machine.

Josh, you were very lucky, because for one bad pixel Apple did not have to replace the system. Most companies would have left you with pixel proble.

Enjoy your new system, hopefully all of your problem are gone now. :)

that's why right now i am a very very happy person. they'll get the money back...i assured them. i've had so many people switch just in the past month.... probably atleast 10.... and this just helps when i make someone switch when i can tell them the service you get with there local apple store.

so very pleased.

In my book (no pun intended), yes. It is a structural flaw and a MAJOR design defect!

i had mine for a week before i decided to return it. it was not unusable by any means. but it was already starting to warp. and i know i would be bothered by it every second. i'm sure after a couple months it would start really looking ugly and maybe affecting the picture of the screen and how the book shuts.
