I just looked at mine and it's very very minor to the point that I wouldnt even do anything about it unless it worsens. I think i know why it's doing that though. When you push the release button on the front to open the screen, how stiff is the lid while you are opening it? Mines pretty stiff and i can see that area flex a little as i'm opening because of the hinge design that they used. I wouldnt be suprised if every single iBook has some degree of seperation in that area eventually.

That is exactly what is happening. When I watch the area when i lift open the lid. the plastic just bends completely away from the screen. I can see this being a serious issue down the line... This is unacceptable. (Just put a bigger hd in too)....

What is everyone's options?

I bought my iBook less than 2 weeks ago. Will they take it back and let me upgrade to a powerbook????

****. first mac i ever buy and it's warping after a week.

2 weeks? I think you may be too late to have it exchanged.

Just call Apple and find out.

Here is Apple's return policy.

o_o; So is it really coming apart at the glue? I did notice in the store that the iBook was rather hard to open. Perhaps some sort of lubricant at the hinges would help? Make it a little easier to open? :) Or maybe I have to spend the extra 400 bucks to get powerbook. >_<

So bunk

Well this really sucks!!!! I just ordered my iBook last week and I am already pissed off about how long they are taking to get it shipped and now I hear about this warping screen problem. It sounds like everyone is having problems with this! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Actually. I bought it 8 days ago (last tuesday) from my local Apple store. So that's under there 10 day return policy.

If they will wave there $99 returned if open policy i will buy there powerbook.

Do you think they'll flex with that. I'll show them the warp on there display models....

just called the apple store. they said they haven't had anyone complain about the problem. i am within the time alotted to return the ibook but will have to pay a $89 restocking fee. i stated that the same problem is on there display models. but she said unless it's a documented defect on apple's site they have to charge the fee. then i asked if they'd wave the fee if i bought a powerbook. still no luck. it's becase they pay a "technician" to inspect it before issuing the refund. well what if this "technician" says that this iBook has these defects because of me???!?!? when i went to first buy this iBook laptop I chose to buy the one they had instock for $899 which was inspected and said to be in perfect condition. so who's to say this technician says it wasn't like that when it left the apple store? what are my rights?

this doesn't seem right. i mean. now i'm closely looking at my ibook. it didn't bother me before. but what is starting to really irritate me is that the battery doesn't even fit flush with the case. it looks like it's a quarter way out. saggin.

the screen is off centered to the left (when closed). now this warping problem. frankly.... i love apple. i love there products. but i think what i have is a rotten apple. i'm really pissed off. if they refuse to take the laptop back I will be VERY upset..... i'm just starting to get back into apple products after a 3 year pc break. if this is how my first attempt is going to turn out.... :(

Any ideas on how to approach this issue??? i wouldn't mind shelling out some more money for the powerbook. but i dont feel i should have to pay for a restocking fee on a obviously defective product.

Something along the lines of, "Haha! Suckers!"

Yeah. Unfortunately, none of the stores I was going to buy at has any powerbooks. So i'd have to order one and wait....

I sure did want a mac. I didnt want to get another windows system.

I'm hoping someone will post an apple solution to the problem.

Is this issue only on the 12" iBooks?? Has anyone who has a 14" iBook had the same experience???

Interesting, this is the only place where I am hearing of this problem.

Does the 14" screen mount the same way? For those ordering or whatever...mine really isn't that bad at all..you can just see it if you look real close. If it gets worse then i'll find a way to just fix it myself..but until then... i'm not too worried about it. I've had PC laptops with 10x worse build quality.

It is interesting. This is the only place I am hearing about this, as well. However, this is the type of flaw that would drive me absolutly crazy.

I wonder if some sort of extra tough glue could be applied. :)

Or perhaps some kind of lubricant on the hinges to make it move a bit more smoothly.

Ah, and I believe there was someone on the first page with a 14" with the very same problem.

Since we are on about the little niggling problems the iBook now seems to have, I was wondering whether anyone else sometimes has a problem getting the iBook open? Sometimes, I try and press the front silver button thing to release the screen so that I can flip it open but I have to press it a few times, sometimes harder so that it unclicks open. This really annoys me. What kind of lock thing does the iBook use anyways for this? I hope it ain't some crappy magnet or something. I wouldn't really classify it as a problem that requires Apple to look at it or something, but it does get annoying when you quickly need to press that button to open the iBook and it doesn't first time.

Good and bad news....

What a freaking ordeal i swear.

So i get set to bring the iBook to the apple store to swap it out for a powerbook. (willing to pay the $99 fee...argh). So i put the Reinstall cd in to reinstall mac os x. It locks up.... Does not get past the language selection. Try to run the disk utility. Locks up. So i'm like hey... This thing is really screwed now.

So i bring it in and they take a look. They boot from a firewire drive and try. It locks up at the same place. It's screwed! I'm like YAY!!

So i tell them I'm willing to pitch in another few hundred for the powerbook. They say ok and charge me for a powerbook with edu discount minus the total on the iBook.

So i'm thinking...down another $400 but i have a SWEEEETTTT powerbook. I MADE OUT RIGHT??

I get home.... this is at 8.30pm. I open the powerbook. and there's 2 pixels out. Both of them fluctuate in and out. Sometimes there and sometimes not. but obviously defective. ARGHH... I call the apple store and talk to the manager right before they close. And he tells me to bring it in tomorrow and the techs will make a decision.

Personally i know it's there policy that 2 pixels are not a defective product. let alone 2 fluctuating pixels. That may or may not be there.

But I mean... I just opened the box. I was at the registration screen when i noticed. So i put it to sleep right there so they would realize it was literally out of the box.

I'm going pull out some cards tomorrow and try to get them to give me a new one and check it thoroughly before I leave.

:(......I would deal with the pixels if it wasn't straight out of the box ya know????

Josh

p.s. the powerbook is SWEET
