HP printing error message on Catalina OS

I am getting a message when trying to print that says:
"hppostprocessing.bundle will damage your computer", followed by a message - report malware to Apple to protect others. If I click OK, the error message disappears and no printing is carried out.
If I connect a Windows OS laptop to the same printer, I can print the document with no problem.
(The printer is a HP laser jet 1200)
Does this suggest this is a Mac issue?

The solution at that website did NOT work for me. Even the installation program is being reported as "will damage our computer." HP may have sold me the last HP printer in my house ever.

No, turning off SIP won't help. The website solution is merely a way to obtain updated drivers that supposedly will work. If no updated drivers are available, you're out of luck.

It all boils down to HP letting their driver certificates to expire. Apple is not going to update it for them as it is the manufacturer's responsibility, just as it's their responsibility to provide drivers for their printers.

The new Apple HP software update 5.1 appeared this evening in System Preferences, Software Update. I downloaded it but did not install it.

I decided instead to let the GIMP driver that I downloaded and installed to remain in place. It does everything the HP driver does and seems to be faster.

My HP is an older LaserJet 1012 which is USB only.

I don't know why you are dying to blame HP (believe me, I don't care for HP either, for a number of reasons), but I can assure you that in this case the party completely at fault is Apple. Apple assigns certificates to software for security purposes. For some reason Apple put out a Security Update that trashed HP's certificates, and one other company's certificates. My guess is that HP was never even consulted; they were just blindsided. (As evidenced by the fact that folks who have called HP Support report that HP Support doesn't have a clue about what is going on.) Please actually read the articles that I cited. They explain what happened.

Well, that's fascinating! I wonder why HP would do that? And then have it reversed?

It seems to me that some of the story may be apocryphal, and some of the story hasn't been told to the public yet.

Apple had to know that acceding to HP's request would make loads of Macintosh users hopping mad and that many of them would be mad at Apple if they revoked HP's certificates without also releasing a statement, at the minimum. It all doesn't add up.

I just read your reply Jake.

Here's what you need to do to have that software update appear:

1. You need to open: /Library/Printers/hp/

2. And delete the entire "hp" folder. You will need to change permissions on the folder before it will allow you to remove it.

3. From System Preferences, Printers and Scanners, remove your HP printer.

4. Reboot and then go back and add the HP.

5. The update will then show up.

I know... it's a real pain like everything else from HP.

This is just more nonsense from HP. Don't get me wrong, I love my HP LaserJet and all the LaserJet printers I have ever used. But dealing with HP customer support sometimes is like getting a root canal on your upper molars.

Because they're incompetent.

And we have to ask why other printer manufacturers are not having the same problem? Epson, Canon, Brother, and so on, all seem to be okay and not affected by the Apple security update.

Thanks, Charlie, That got rid of the error messages. Says I'm at version 2.0 of the printer software, though, not 5, or whatever. But I'm happy that the errors are gone, so I don't care about the version so much.
