Yes, the NT transition contained some legacy code. Windows 7 offered the right click on a program to run it in XP mode - just one example that shows legacy code has to be included.

This is an old argument. I have always believed that in order to justify the cost of a new version of Windows, Microsoft feels they have to keep the backward compatibility of as many programs as possible. They don't control the upgrade cost of all the programs that run in Windows, so in order to keep the irate out cries down they keep the backward compatibility. This is not 100% true though and some programs get kicked to the curb but for the most part most will work in the new OS.

Apple takes a different approach. They develop a new OS then offer free or close to free upgrades to those apps that are not compatible with the new OS. Since they tightly control most of the apps through their store and the manufacturing of all the hardware that helps. Granted some apps will get kicked to the curb. It is going to happen.

I have noticed unlike Windows users, Apple users will simply not upgrade if they don't like the changes. Windows users are hoping the next upgrade will have less blue screens and less malware vulnerability.

There will never be an OS that totally meets everyones requirements. For now there are two big camps: Windows and Apple and there are an abundance of opinions on both sides. Bottom line - upgrades of OS versions, program versions, or app versions will always be inevitable. Clinging to older OS versions or programs or apps or computer hardware will cause a person issues at some point.

I know upgrading can be expensive either from the cost of the software or the cost of new hardware. But the cost have come down significantly since the introduction of the personal computer in 70's/80's when the journey of the personal computer started. At least now most can afford a piece of technology.
