Same principle. It helped for system tasks, but Safari was still awful as a browser

I will try to add some additional suggestions for improving FireFox in ways that can't be done on Safari, etc. later.

Nate

I don't use Safari for much, but do use Thunderbird for email, which is now in about 5 point type. Thanks for alternative idea, but sorry to say that I don't understand what's happening on that site. Seems to be for developers? Can you give me a starting point please?

FWIW.
For the last 3 or so yeas have stretched my numbers s/s across 2 monitors and in 10.9 the entire area on 2nd screen just faded into oblivion.
.

If you need an app window to span multiple displays, deselect the option "Displays have separate Spaces" in the Mission Control pane of System Preferences.

If this solves the problem give a rep bump to member pm-r. That tip is in the first link of this post

Delete Yosemitie and Return to Previous OS?

Thanks for this thread.

I miss the coordination of photos and other stuff from my iMac to my iPad and iPod which are on older and outdated OS for many new apps.

Any advice to retrurn to my previous Before Yosemitie and how to?

Thanks,

Download the latest version, as of today 1.3 stable; unzip by double-clicking; double-click the unzipped file; and re-start your Mac.
That's all there is to it.

I tried going to System Preferences and changing the resolution of the screen but found it was more trouble than it was worth and returned to Optimize for Built-in Display. Instead, I gave up on Safari, which seems tp have hard-wired their font size and style choices into the BookMarks menubar etc., and went to FireFox and added No-Squint and Theme Font & Size Changer, which allows you to manipulate the Bookmarks Toolbar fonts, sizes and styles and increase the size of the text in the body of each web page individually without full zooming the page. And I changed the default font in FireFox Preferences to Times New Roman 16.

In Apple Mail, I set Message List Font to Lucida Grande 16 and the Message Fonts to Times New Roman 36.

I'm not sure whether TinkerTool really still changes the default fonts in other applications universally, but I set it to default other Application Fonts to Lucida Grande 16. TinkerTool is simply a way to try to universally set default font choices across applications in one place. It doesn't force applications to do anything that you couldn't do individually in each application.

I tried playing with Display Contrast in Accessibility but didn't like the "washed-out" look so I returned it to close to normal.

I unchecked LCD Font Smoothing in System Preferences/General

I added XtraFinder to tweak the Finder in numerous ways.

None of the above was done to improve the aesthetics of Yosemite, but simply to reduce my eyestrain and headaches from constant re-focusing and squinting - a problem I never encountered with Mavericks and its forebears.

Nate

PS - These very large font size choices are not done to compensate for my vision. My eye doctor continues to assure me that my vision with my eyeglasses remains corrected to 20/20 and my prescription is correct; and I don't need these changes when using my three year old MBP running Mavericks. These choices were made simply to overcome the problems with Yosemite on my months-old brand-new MBP running Yosemite. And I still read the same printed books, magazines and newspapers. It is something distorted about Yosemite, exactly as described in numerous posts on the Apple website.

Nate those Firefox add-ons are awesome! Thank you! Wish they worked for Thunderbird... switched to Mail, but not fond of it. The Lucida Grande zip file worked nicely; I just wish I could make it bigger.

There's nothing wrong with my eyesight either, but Yosemite is doing me in too.

Last week I replaced my Late 2009 27" iMac (death due to graphics card failure) with a new base model 27" iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core i5). The Apple Store actually updated the iMac when they did the Data Migration since all iMacs except the Retina Display version were still Mavericks in stock. I had no issue with Yosemite and decided to update my Early 2011 MacBookPro the next day. I had no issues updating or with performance and am actually enjoying the new features as well as the fresh look of the OS.

I have a clean Yosemite install on my Macbook Pro 2011 - I am also a light user - but I have seen a few bluetooth issues and Safari is still hanging far too often for my liking neither of which happened with Mavericks . I am now running 10.10.2 beta to see if they have fixed the problems i am seeing.

I can only reply that I haven't seen any significant BT issues, and the current version of Safari is by far the best one I've used (which has been since 1.0) in terms of stability and versatility. I always used to keep Firefox around "just in case" I encountered an issue, but I've been updating the darn thing every two weeks for nearly two years without having to fire it up (though of course it fires itself up every single time you update it ...)

Depends on how you use the box - all of the problems I see are wake from sleep issues - the mouse may not wake up or becomes jerky, Safari hanging on first page load or beach balling for minutes - I fresh installed on a new SSD and keep Mavericks on the old HDD (but I have not reverted to it yet)

Like you I keep a Chrome browser as a backup and do revert to it occasionally (rather than reboot) as that does not seem to have the same problems.
cheers

My other Mac is the older (nearly "Vintage" :Not-Amused:) 2011 MBP and I have had no hanging in Safari, no Bluetooth issues other than the usual of having to reconnect my Jambox on occasion, which I have always had to do, and zero awake from sleep issues in the last 5-6 days since both new iMac and MBP have been running Yosemite.

There are a few things I need Apple to help me sort out such as being able to pick up my last iPad Air Safari browsing session within my iMac Finder (love it) but not seeing where the MBP fits into this system or the iPhone.

I have to give Apple credit for 100% US based support; sometimes they're exactly on track , other times not so much but at least they're there. Yosemite has been a positive experience for me. I was terrified to update to it on my sick Late 2009 iMac (and rightly so-it was a mess). One needs a very healthy Mac to update to it.

In addition, I have been wishing that I could turn off transparency entirely instead of just "reducing" it because I have suspected that this transparency :Shouting: gimmick is the cause of the difficulty in distinguishing greyed/unavailable menu options from black/available menu options in the dropdown menus in all applications. Not enough difference in shades between the grey and the black. Never had this problem in Mavericks or its forebears.

Today, I tried turning on System Preferences/General/Use Dark Menubar and voila! - although I am not especially found of the black "look" it does finally make it easy to once again tell the difference between greyed/unavailable menu options versus white-on-black/available menu options in the dropdown menus, so I guess I am going to keep dark menubar turned on too.

Like many of you, I am very leery of upgrading computers to mew operating systems. I always try it after a few months go by and only on one computer before switching all computers. There have been OS that only one computer was upgraded because of all the glitches and crashes.

My background

I have 5 Macs, 2 iPhone 5, 1 iPad and 1 iPad Mini Retina. I am a real estate photographer, web designer, and I design marketing ads for real estate besides doing SEO and social media. Because of the real estate business, I need to access real estate files, so cloud storage is also a major key.

How I Developed My Hypothesis
I recently bought 2 new computers. The MBP 15" was top of the line, 1 Tb flash storage, i7core processor, and 16 Gb of memory. The other computer was added mid December with Yosemite. I use all iWork apps,
Aperture, Compressor, Final Cut, and RapidWeaver for web design and plug-ins that complement these apps and programs. I found that the new computers worked fine. why doe these computers work OK but the others don't?

"Cleaning" My Macs - What I found out...

I always had problems no matter how long I waited to install a new version of Mac OS. My research showed that most of us had some problems but others did not and there were those who had no major problems at all. I hypothesized the following:

1) "Cleaning" programs such as Mac, "cleaned" files that may have been necessary for a particular program and when the OS tries to access it, there is a crash. So I stopped using MacKeeper. After, completely wiping and re-downloading the operating system OS 10.9 and loading each of my programs and plug-ins I needed manually or through the App & iTunes stores, I have not had any problems for 6 months with any program. I did this with two of my three older computers, Macbook Air and Mac Pro mid 2012. The only major change has been not using MacKeeper.

2) If you are a basic user, (email and internet) you probably won't have major problems but I even found the Finder became corrupted with a basic user. It was slow and crashed all the time.

3) Each program may create it's own set of glitches, that is why we may not all experience the same issues. It can become a major problem when we upgrade over the OS that has a missing file that does not present a major problem in the current OS but in an upgraded OS issues arise.

4) After having all the problems with the OS upgrades, I have stayed away from Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Conclusion:

I only recommend switching if you absolutely need to take advantage of new features. I have started upgrading because I need the flexibility of working with a cross-platform & cloud environment. I use iWork programs, and until I upgrade, I have lost the ability to access my cloud files.

Since the computers are no longer being "cleaned" by MacKeeper, I found that I could migrate each computer using TimeCapsule without any problems. Some programs do need to have the plug-ins re-installed.

If you'd read any thread (literally nearly ANY thread) on this forum, you'd know what we think of MacKeeper. Short version: not much.

Your other advice about clean installs and waiting a bit if you're using mission-critical software is well-received and widely accepted.

I haven't upgraded yet and am still uncertain as to whether I need to.

I use Excel and Word in Office for Mac 2011 a lot, is it compatible with Yosemite?

It's running fine for me. I use both programs routinely with no problems. Make sure that you are running the most up to date version.

So far so good! However, whoever approved of the eliminating the 3d effects on Icons must have only one eye. I find the new flat style rather primitive, definitely unappealing and cheap looking! :Grimmace:

Is that 14.4.7? I am concerned it might mess up a document I first created in 2011 and updated last July after upgrading to Mavericks.

Yes. I just checked and my version is 14.4.7 None of the documents I routinely use have complex formatting. I'm also not running Excel macros at the moment. The ones I was using have not been used in quite a while (several years) and will probably need to be recreated. I don't have that kind of time right now.
