DoF does change if you change the camera (so long as the sensor size is different). DoF is greater the bigger the sensor. Ever notice that point and shoot camera's give very little depth of field even with an f/2.8 aperture. There is even less DoF on a phones camera. The iPhone has an f/2.8 aperture. How often do you see pictures taken with a phone that have a lot of DoF... Never.

Dr Photo is correct. DoF does change when the camera's sensor is different.

Going from a DSLR to a Micro 4/3rds or iPhone is a whole different ball of wax due to the contraction of mirror lens placement. But if I take a 85mm prime lens at f/1.8 and take a head shot of you from 10ft on a 6D, then replace the camera with a cropped 600D and stand in the same spot as before. The DoF stays exactly the same. The only change is now you would be getting the nose and mouth shot instead of a full head shot. Its when one has to move further away from the subject that the DoF is lessened.

If you have an iPhone or iPod download Field Tools. Its a very helpful program that you can use to deduct your focal point and DoF range. Maybe it can help you understand the optical reasons behind what I was trying to explain.

For example on a Canon 6D with a 85mm prime at f/1.8 you DoF is at 9.8ft to 10.2ft, giving you 1/2 foot of play.
On a Canon 70D with the 85mm prime you must be at f/2.8 to have a 9.8ft to 10.2ft DoF. Also giving you 1/2foot of play.

Does this help?

Edit:

Hmm what I think confuses everyone is that with a Full Frame camera, the photographer can get closer to his/her subject and still get the subject in the frame. Its the act of being able to get closer that shortens ones DoF greater.

People generally say its the camera, because trying to explain in further detail is just to much for most people to fully understand. So we tell a little lie that its the camera even though its a lie, just in hopes they slightly understand something rather then nothing..

Please don't . . . ;P

I frequent a number of Photography Forums, but at the one I spend most of my time the subject of DOF comes up regularly with much heated back and forth, quickly becoming tiresome.

The problem is the true answer is both simple and complex. Viewed from one perspective DOF is independent of sensor size (this is correct), however, since almost every parameter that does impact DOF is dependent upon sensor size (for example focal length and subject distance) in that sense DOF depends upon sensor size (but not directly).

So take your choice, but please don't waste time, space and energy debating it.

I really hope I haven't been over zealous on this subject. I been sick all week and half a sleep on meds. Which honestly is no excuse, but never the less I like to apologize publicly. My only intent is to help and educate. :[

BTW I am now using a Pentax K-3 which is a dream machine and has just about everything the technology has to offer that I can use. Mostly using it with a 50-135 2.8.
(sorry about the jpg loss, but my connection is slow).

Have been following this Osprey pair for three years. They have just laid eggs for this season.
The nest is so close to photograph that this un-cropped image was taken with a 70-200mm lens (Nikon D3s).

Very nice,, very nice indeed..

I haven't been doing as much shooting as I would like.. I did have some of my Lilies bloom around my house, to my surprise, my white lilies were orange.. LOL but a peachy orange so very nice unexpected change..

DSLR Choices

Hi TatooedMac,
Back in the day I had a Minolta Dimage7, which was Prosumer and getting rave reviews. Fast forward, and I now use a Canon EOS 60D with both the standard kit lens and a
Telephoto Zoom ef-70-300mm-f-45-56-do-is-usm. I also have in my kit, a good tripod and a radio, not infrared shutter release. With this release, I don't have to point it at the front of the camera, and the range is about 50 feet. This picture of a humming bird sticking his little tongue out was taken with that camera, tripod, and shutter release by my wife. My humble opinion is, get the best DSLR you can reasonably afford, then spend the real money on excellent lenses and useful accessories. The image is first and foremost in the eye of the photographer. After that it is mostly in the quality of the glass, and sometimes in the Post Processing. Photoshop is the industry standard for this.
Hope this helps,
Unkei

Joe, what happened to your blog????

Ok my blog is back..
But I moved it. Here is what happened. Friend of mine wanted to get a birthday gift. So he spent like 10 dollars on some traffic to my site and tube channel. Which I told him before was a waste, but he meant weal.

So got a few hits on my blogger site, no problem. However they were supposed to send viewer traffic to my youtube channel. Instead they spammed 200 views to each video. Which would have set you tubes view count police into an uproar. So when I seen what happened a few weekends back, instead of trying to work it out with Youtube which I know would fail. And I had like 3 accounts linked to it that would have got banned as well. I just backed up everything and cleaned house before they caught wind of what happened.

So week and half later, I am still re uploading videos. LOL Sad as it was just starting to pick up traffic.

However I look at this as a good thing. One I never wanted a written blog to start with and two this will allow me to focus more on the youtube channel and blog from it.

So here is the new address Joe Jackson - YouTube
Facebook is www.facebook.com/groups/exodistphotography
DeviantART is JoeWJacksonJr (Joe Jackson) on deviantART
Twitter is still @ExodistPhoto

I hate that I lost 30 subscribers and about 5000 total views. But now that I am not trying to work two blogs as one, this will give me more time to actually take photos and focus just on video blogging.

I went to my local camera shop on Saturday meaning to buy either the Nikkor 14-24 or 16-35 lens to go on my D700.

An hour, a trade in, and a sum of money later I left with the 16-35 f4 and a new Nikon D800 :)

I looked at and tried the new D810 - but couldn't justify the extra £700 for what I could see as no discernable difference in IQ.

I think I now have the camera and lenses to see my days out :)
