If you followed the instructions I gave in post #36, when the photos on the Phone showed up, did you click on all of them that you wanted, even if they were not in the New section? You can select ANY image that shows up on the iPhone list to import, even if Photos thinks it is not "new." As I said, you could even select ALL of them and import them, then delete the duplicates, but that approach may be a lot more work.

If you followed the instructions I gave in post #36,
I did as you said. Only the 301 photos showed up. I selected them all, clicked the import button and they imported. But I still have many photos on my iPhone that are not in my Photos. I subsequently disconnected my iPhone and have just now reconnected. Not my Photos app says, "Please unlock" my phone. I don't know what that means in the Photos sense. Finder and iTunes don't have a problem with it.

Try opening the Photos app on the iPhone. I had that message when I plugged in the iPhone once and it took a couple of plug/unplugs to get it to recognize that the iPhone was, in fact, unlocked.

Are you saying that when you did connect the iPhone only 301 photos showed up in Photos on the Mac when you selected the iPhone in the side bar?

One alternative is to use Image Capture to transfer all of the pictures from the iPhone to a drive attached to the Mac as files, not importing them into Photos directly, then use the Import function to point to where all those pictures are and import from there. That would mean two transfers, but at least you'd get them all.

In the Applications folder you will find an app called Image Capture. It is used to capture images from your iPhone to either Photos or to files on any drive you may wish to use. To use it, close Photos on the Mac, connect the iPhone and start Image Capture. After a few minutes it will populate with thumbnails of the images on the iPhone. At the bottom is a selector box where you can select where you want the images to be put. Make that selection, the select the images from the window with clicks, or SHIFT-click same as in Photos. In Image Capture the newest are at the top, older ones show up at the bottom and you can scroll down. Image Capture will then allow you to Import the selected images. If you want ALL of them, you don't have to select, just click on the "Import All"box in the lower right corner. Once you have all of the image files wherever you want to put them, you can then close Image Capture and disconnect the iPhone. Open Photos on the Mac, select File/Import and navigate to where you put the images. Select the ones you want to import, then click on the button marked "Review for Import" and the images will import. At least that's how it works for me. I don't get a review, they just import. When I have done that, if the image is already in Photos, I get presented with a query box about whether or not I really want to import the duplicate, with a thumbnail of what is already in Photos and what is about to be imported. If they are the same, I can reject it. If they are different, but have the same name (That can happen), then I can say that I want to do that and it will import the new image with a modified name. Again, you can select any or all of the images that Image Capture shows you on the iPhone. It should show all of the images that are in Photos on the iPhone.

Maybe just to get everything into your external HD this first time you could use Image Capture (in Application Folder) to ensure you have got all the photos you want off the iPhone. It's a simple process to export the ones you need into Photos from there.

I think you meant "import" from there. That's what I suggested in Post #45.

Will the imported photos retain the original dates that they were taken?
I believe they will. That information is in the metadata that is included in the image fle. Once you have used Image Capture, it's easy to check. Just right click on one of the files and Get Info to see the data on the image.

In the Applications folder you will find an app called Image Capture.
I connected my iPhone and started Image Capture. Without my doing anything, at the bottom of the screen, it says, "1 of 314 selected." (I've taken a few pictures recently.) My phone says that there are 16,914 photos. In Image Capture, my iPhone is selected. I see no way to change it. Why does Image Capture say 314, yet my iPhone has so many more? Does Image Capture (and the Photos app) only see the pictures taken on my physical phone? My wife does take the vast majority of our photos. I haven't scrolled thru all of the photos on my iPhone, since that would far too laborious, but the 314 seem to fall into 3 categories:
  • Photos taken on my phone.
  • Photos scanned offline, imported to my Photos app on my MBA, and automatically synced to my phone.
  • Photos sent to me via text and saved on my phone.
So, why do Image Capture and the Photos app only seem to see these photos?

On the iPhone, Photos is where pictures are normally stored. When you take one, it gets put in Photos. When you open Photos on the phone, how many pictures can you see? Image Capture should know about all of them in Photos. If Image Capture only sees 314, that is strange. Where do you see it says 16, 914 photos? Are you using iCloud to store images? If so, they may be in the cloud instead of actually being ON the phone. How many of the 16,914 were sent to you? How did you save them? Are your new photos synced to the Mac? iCloud?

On my iPhone in the Photos app in the same place that yours shows 10,582.

How many of the 16,914 were sent to you? How did you save them? Are your new photos synced to the Mac? iCloud?
The vast majority of the photos that I see on my iPhone were taken by my wife. All photos are synced between my iPhone, her iPhone, my iPad and iCloud. Before all of this (but not now, for some reason) to my MBA.

When you open Image Capture with the iPhone attached, how many images does it show at the bottom of the window? Here is a screenshot of what I see:

Screen Shot 2020-08-01 at 5.15.48 PM.png

As you can see, there are 11,276 items. I can't say why there is a difference between that and the sum of 10,582 and 385 (10,967). But they are close, not 16,000 apart.

When you take a pic on your iPhone it is stored in "Recents". Pics taken on any other device and synced to your iPhone is stored in "My Photo Stream".

When you attach your iPhone to a Mac via USB and use the Photos app or Image Capture the Mac only recognises pics in "Recents" and NOT in "My Photo Stream".

That explains everything.
The vast majority of your pics were taken on your wife's iPhone and synced to your iPhone. Check, and you'll see them in "My Photo Stream" - under Albums. They will not be uploadable to your Mac.

BTW, if you copy pics from Facebook or some other Online service, you can choose where they are to be stored on your Mac. Most people choose either Downloads or Photos app. If the latter, they will appear in Photos app and in "My Photo Stream" on your iPhone assuming the two are in sync.

PS Tell us if you want your wife's iPhone to sync or copy pics taken on her iPhone to appear in your Mac's Photos app.

Ian, on my iPhone in Photos there is no album "My Photo Stream." I do have images synced from my wife's iPhone and images from other sources online. I'm on iOS 13.6. Do you know where that My Photo Stream might be?

Have a read here:

You might find a bit of an explanation...
