I'm absolutely NOT a guy that looks forward to a major upgrade unless it accomplishes something that I need, or would like to see addressed. Photos 8.0 has been a thorn in my side since it was released. I shoot mostly RAW and unedited photos in RAW all appear blurry until I click on edit. EVERY preview looks like I missed focus and the first time this happened I almost had a heart attack. I thought I missed focus on 100 pictures. This is a known issue with other photographers in the Apple Communities and the general consensus was it would be addressed in the next upgrade to Sonoma.

If someone that has upgraded to Sonoma would kindly check Photos Version number, I'd appreciate it. If it is still version 8.0, I'm not going to bother with the upgrade at this point because the computer is running like a Swiss watch lately.

thanks

Hi Ken

It would seem that Sonoma still has problems with RAW format imaging if the links below are anything to go by:

Uggghhhhhh 😟

VERY discouraging. I don't do a lot of editing, and Photos always did 99% of everything I needed.

If that's so, why use RAW? What editing do you do that requires RAW?
Howdy Jake,

I meant beyond the scope of Photos, although I do use Affinity on occasion. I'm not a digital creator. I take photos that will occasionally be printed or used on web sites. The JPEG rendering is actually quite good, and if were only for social media, it wouldn't be an issue. When editing RAW files, the detail and contrast are superior, the color output is more realistic and there are fewer digital artifacts. I will generally edit the RAW file and export as PNG or TIFF.

Does it really matter that much in general scheme of things? Probably not, but I'd simply rather maintain the original file size without compression and losing data. Storage is cheap. I'm probably more neurotic than I need to be, but it's the way I've been doing it for years.

Hi @hempomatic

I recognise your situation only too well. In my earlier life, everything was RAW having been taken on expensive cameras (I am or was a Nikon advocate - personal preference). Along with Nikon; Pentax (now more or less gone); Canon; Fuji; Olympus and all the rest.

What put them into the background were the digital cameras inbuilt to iPhones and also integrated into Nikon, Canon, et al, pocket cameras.

So, I've been there, cherished the RAW imaging; but now a top class photo "machine" will give HiRes JPEG images.

My advice, for what it's worth: stick with the high-end cameras, but discard RAW unless you're in the top professional crowd and earning a living from it. HiRes JPEG images are pretty damned good.

In that case: Apple Photos plus Affinity (which can be integrated into Photos) will serve you well.

Personal view, of course.

I hear what you're saying Ian, but the fact remains, it's supposed to work, and hasn't for well over a year. After every update to Ventura, I'd check, and sure enough, it still didn't work. Now we have a total upgrade to the OS, AND an upgrade from Photos version 8 to 9, and it still doesn't work apparently.

The RAW files are still there, intact, but the extra steps are a a bit frustrating. I have over 25K pictures in two libraries and I'm pretty well locked into the Photos ecosystem at this point. I'll just keep taking RAW & JPEG for a while longer. Eventually they are bound to stumble on a fix.

You make some very fair points, Ken

As you say, it should have been fixed by now. Persevere and good luck (y)
