Unfortunately I have no idea what you are actually ending up doing and possibly nobody else does either which won't help another user that ends up with the same problem you seemed to have started out with… Oh well, carry on I guess…

What are you talking about? I just said exactly what I did.
I did a time machine backup from another computer I had with el capitan installed on it.

Thanks for the explanation that I now understand that makes sense.

That's also good to know that that method also worked with a pre-2011 iMac.

And do I assume that you ended up with El Capitan directly from using the backup??? Apple isn't super clear as to what can actually happen in such situations according to what they write and what many users experience.

Anyway, glad to hear it's working as you want.

Yes,
I did end up with El Capitan.

However, after doing an update, it got a little screwed up on the restart and had some glitches and I had to manually restart. However, working fine now. Hopefully it stays that way!

Can you please help ??

I just got a 2010 27" iMac. When I went to install a new copy of the OS through the recovery HD it froze and I had to restart...now the only option it gives me is the internet recovery with the spinning globe.

Once the loading screen with the globe fully loads, it goes to a blank screen with nothing but the apple logo.
I have left it for almost 45 minutes now and nothing has happened.

is this normal? Is it OK to leave the screen on like this and let it work?

I have done this many times and don't remember this issue.

Please help if you can.

I'm afraid the apple logo is going to get burned into the screen. Nothing is changing.

I attached a photo of what my screen looks like right now

I'm exactly in the same position. My page is stuck at apple lego for 8 hr now . I did the comand+option +R and passed the globe but stuck at this that is doing my head in .
How dod you resolved yours please ? And how long is going to stay like this . Thank you

It currently has Yosemite on it? That model may not run Sierra if that is what you are trying to download. Depends when in 2009/2010 it was manufactured and cannot find that precise number via Mactracker. You are doing this via the App Store and have an App Store identity?

I know this is an old thread, but figured I would add what worked for me so it may help others who come across this same issue. Mid 2010 iMac 21.5 upgraded to a SSD and restored to High Sierra from the internet over wifi and then it would hang on the apple logo. NVRAM reset corrected this issue for me.

Hope this helps someone!

It is not normal for the installation process to take such a long time. It could be a problem with the internet connection, the OS image, or the hard drive. It's best to try restarting the iMac and try the installation process again. If it still doesn't work, you can try booting in safe mode, or contacting Apple Support for further assistance. Additionally, it is not recommended to leave the screen on for an extended period of time as it could lead to screen damage.

They were past the typical beginning installation stage. It was hanging on the apple logo stage. A quick NVRAM reset will address the issue.

If you're trying to download an update from the App Store, you will need to have an App Store account to access and download the update.

As for restoring from a backup, it's possible to restore a previous version of macOS if you have a backup that was created when that version was still installed on your computer. However, it's important to note that restoring from a backup can potentially cause data loss or other issues, so it's important to back up your important files before attempting a restore. Additionally, the process of restoring from a backup may vary depending on the specific backup method used.
