I think the path to macOS High Sierra (10.13) requires you to install OS X El Capitan (10.11) first. Try to upgrade to that first, and see if that will complete. Then you should be able to do the upgrade to 10.13.

It sure can.

Maybe let us know how you're attempting to do the update.

Hi Patrick,

At first i just turned the Mac on went to the Apple icon clicked software updates, High Sierra was the only update tried to install that and that is when i hit the issues with the error promts saying to checking billing info. Now that update no longer shows up under software update i tried to search for it and it will not come up i found a link to install 10.11 (El Capitan) and that is where i got the prompt saying that it could not be installed on this Mac.

My question exactly. What model and year is your device. Have a look at the "About this Mac" under the Apple menu and let us know the model and year.

Thanks Ferrarr but this is the link i had previously tried and this is what generates the error

You're going to have to post a screen shot of the "About This Mac" popup window, that tells us the specifics of that iMac.

Do you have access to another Mac?

Maybe I'm missing something, but if that's a screenshot of the OP's Mac in their #23 post, it sure looks like the default OS X El Capitan (10.11) desktop image to me, so maybe it's already installed.

But this could help regardless.

Phew…!!! Really, no OS should be such a hassle to upgrade. And I will admit that Apple really doesn't make it easy for some situations.

Good news. I'm starting to get the feeling that incremental backups may be necessary. This has never happened to me because I always update/upgrade when possible but maybe it has to be done in stages?

It's remotely possible that macOS High Sierra installer was downloaded with that Mac at some point but not installed or maybe even deleted at some point.
It might even show in the "Purchased" tab option.

What your About This Mac says is what you're currently booted in and running.

PS: Is there another volume drive partition on that Mac perhaps???

BTW: Here's what my 27" iMac's About This Mac looks like, and I wonder why the slight difference.

Just a bit odd…

EDIT:
I think the "Startup Disk" in my screenshot is because I have multiple boot partitions on the single drive.

Post a screen shot of your internal drive from Disk Utility (DU)? Make sure you select show all devices, from the “View” menu.

I believe you installed it to a different partition on your iMac.
