How are you doing the "update"??

You shouldn't be getting those notices if the Mac is already running 10.8.5.

I don't think the iTunes store has anything to do with updating a Mac. I'm puzzled by what that message is really being triggered by.

I think we're both in the same boat Jake and with both of us wondering *** as the expression seems to go these days. :Smirk:

More PEBKAC perhaps…??? ;D

Good thought guys. I didn't notice that when I read the thread yesterday,

BTW it has been a while since I looked at the dialog boxes for 10.8.x. Something about them reminds me of say 10.6.x or so.

That message which is shown is a bit of a mystery. The only thing I can think of is that the OP does not have an Apple ID since he's just trying to help a friend. The query he's receiving would seem to indicate that his credentials are missing.

Yup… nice eh??? … and they actually had some texture and color to them rather than the so common later OS flat grey gravestone type dialog boxes.

Hi Patrick,

I am going to the Apple symbol in the top left and clicking software update, there has been a slight change in the issue since Friday i am no longer showing any available updates, Version still shows as 10.8.5 and if i click the Store tab and click show my account i still get the same error about Software Update Required.

Thanks for any assistance

Have them sign out and sign back in, to see if that helps. It may also ask to confirm payment card type.

Have they gone into View My Account, and checked billing info there?

Or, maybe sign out, restart, then sign back in?

That message generally means that the OS you are trying to install does not run on the Mac that you are using to download the software. Before we can give you good, helpful, advice we need to know the specs for both the Mac you are using to download the software and the Mac that you want to use ot run the software. I suspect that the download machine is old enough that it doesn't support the software that you want to run. The App Store detects that and stops the download.
