Share your Snow Leopard Experience/Concerns

No boot for me with the SL upgrade. The entire install went without a hitch. But can't boot. Just get a kernel panic on start up.

Booted into my SD backup (done immediately prior to the install) at the moment to try and troubleshoot.

Looks like it may be a Paragon issue from the log.

Looks like Apple is at least going to keep some kind of track on illegal use. There is also a new kext that SL loads I've not seen before.
It's called Dont Steal Mac OS X.

I hope there's not so much of it they have to start instituting some activation type stuff with their software. That would be a real drag.

The install disk had problems and my new imac was never able to read it.
It just stuck after some minutes trying to install. Then I went to the mac store here in Brisbane. The guys had already 3 people complaining about the same thing.
We tried 3 more new disks and all had the same problem.
I was sent back home and will receive a "new" disk next week...
Very frustrating for a first timer full of hopes about the MAC legend...

This thread is for SNOW LEOPARD and not Leopard. If you mean Snow Leopard, NO ibook will work with Snow Leopard. The iBook is a Power PC processor and Snow Leopard is only for use on an Intel Mac.

EDIT: I see you changed iBook to iMac. Big difference. This is the first I have seen mention of this issue.

For anyone who did not see his original post, it said Leopard and iBook. That is why I posted what I did.

Have you tried making a back up of the Install DVD, and then restoring it onto a USB/Firewire device IE iPod, External HDD?

Side note...took me about 30 minutes to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Saved about 15 GB of space, and almost all my apps work except for onyx, which I don't use that often anyways. >_<"

I got my Snow Leopard upgrade yesterday which I thought was great as with it being the weekend I expected it to arrive next week. But hats off to the dispatching and postal services.

Anyway, DVD in to my iMac and about 30 minutes install complete. Everything working perfectly no problems, just how it should be.

PS: My iMac is only a month old and upgrade was from 10.5.8 to 10.6

Well that was painless!
Popped the disc in, clicked install, no option for archive and install, just install. Left it to it's own devices, as I had nothing that wasn't backed up anyway, and 40 minutes later, a lovely install completed. No problems, mail works straight away, no network connection issues, nothing at all.
I haven't looked to see if I have any quarantined apps yet.
Initial thoughts are, I like the new desktop pics, and Safari 4 looks very nice, I like the "window" view for your top visited web sites. I wonder if the eBay incompatibility is fixed. Hope so.
I upgraded from 10.5.6 by the way.

lol - just one of those things why it's strongly recommended to have a backup in case something doesn't go right. SuperDuper! is great for this.

Over all, I think it's a pretty straight forward upgrade.

My issue with doing an upgrade instead of a fresh install is that I install and remove hundreds of apps during the course of a year. One of them is bound to screw with me and one did in this case.

You only need a little bit of troubleshooting skills (and that's really all I have compared to some of the folks we have around here) and know how to google to find the answers you need.

just curious, who's upgrading to snow leopard 10.6 this weekend? and who isn't?

i am not new to apple or os x leopard, i have been a user since feb 2008. however, i am wondering how apple is when it comes to OS upgrades. is it like windows, and upon release, it's buggy and full of compatablity problems, or is it a lot smoother (i hope smoother).

just wanting everyones opinion. so post some feedback, either good or bad and why you are or are not upgrading to snow leopard.

i did mine yesterday afternoon, and i had no problems, it was really easy.
took an hour, restarted just fine, and everything works great. Nice new features, though i understand not many - i like the improvements that were made. I also notice it is faster in many areas.

The flash blocker I had installed for Safari 4 has disappeared since installing Snow Leopard, those annoying clips are back.
I haven't seen any other mention of this. Does anybody have a link to a reliable source of Flash Blocker please? I cannot remember where my last one came from, or where to locate it on my machine.

Just tried printing and no drivers available for Lexmark printers yet, just to let anyone else know.
Not surprising of course, give them a little time. Everything else is spot on so far, even software I was unsure of working seems fine. I've checked most.

Yeah... well, since I only have about 3 3rd party apps installed on my one year old MBP, and I uninstalled one of them (flip4Mac) yesterday, I guess I shouldn't expect to run into any issues.
I've done a Time Machine backup and I'm going to install and use SuperDuper! today. Then I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Just joined the forum (no idea why I haven't before). Anyway, I upgraded to SL yesterday on my MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (4GB) and everthing seemed fine. Then I started to run some of the Apple apps. Mail keeps crashing now and then and Safari hung a couple of times. Several of my 3rd party apps don't work correctly. For example Rapidweaver (used for my websites) hangs when loading files. Fireworks 8 had to load Rosetta before it would work, Some of my video converting programmes won't work. MPEG streamclip din't work with my Qtime files until I found out that I had to reinstall mpeg-2 bolt on. Luckily, Found that Qtime 7 is still there.

Seems to be not too bad a first. But there are many many problems with many 3rd party programmes. Bummer! Apple should have waited before it released this. It is far too unstable.......

Not a happy camper

I have a MacPro that had OS X 10,5. Bought SL and installed it yesterday. All looked good, but --- Parallels 3.0 will not work with 10,6. Had just bought a Epson pro3800 ($1300.00) now it will not work, plus had an older HP laser that will not work. No drivers for either one. Plus one small pllugin for auto phone dialing that does not work.
I really am not a happy camper right now.

Ok, I just installed Snow Leopard which took about 75 minutes. So far I noticed that I went from 214GB of free space to 237GB which is amazing. Also, it runs a lot faster and there definitely so visual enhancements here and there. I’ve used VLC, Microsoft Office 2008, Toast, and Adium which all run fine.

My only issue is that I’m still trying to figure out how to set up Exchange in Mail. In Entourage and in Outlook, I just put in the OWA server address and don’t need to put in the incoming and outgoing mail servers. In Mail, it asks for this and I’ve tried putting in different address and leaving it blank and it wouldn’t work. Any advice?

Also, I’ve installed the new Bootcamp drivers for Windows XP and there are two big things that I’ve seen so far when running it. The first thing is that ‘right clicking’ works! I put two fingers on the trackpad and press down and it right clicks just like it does in Mac OSX. This feature might have already been in Leopard though because I didn’t think about trying that till now. Now the second biggest improvement that I’ve noticed is that Windows runs MUCH cooler than it did on Leopard. I’ve used Windows XP with the new Snow Leopard Boot Camp drivers and it doesn’t heat up as badly as Leopard did.

So far, this is definitely worth the $29 upgrade!

Isn't it free to upgrade Parallels? You only have to buy the serial number, right? Just download version 4.0 (or 5.0 beta!) and you'll be fine.

I've read through most of these & may have overlooked if anyone had received their pre-order yet. My wife & I bought our Mac's & qualified for A $9.95 SL upgrade so we sent in our pre-order. At (Apple - Status Inquiry) I can find our order info OK but it says it's Back Ordered. I was wondering if anyone had received their pre-order yet?

Hi, I just joined the forum

I found it while looking for info on upgrading to Snow Leopard and so far I must say I find it very informing!

I'm trying to do my homework before buying and installing and I am learning so much. So far I am feeling confident in the upgrade, I will timemachine and try an full disk image as well. I am also running vmware with windows xp which i need to update the vmware to the current version.

I have QT 7 Pro, is QT X also going to be available in a pro? I was sort of hoping he pro license I purchased for 7 will give me a free pro upgrade to QT X pro if available.

After much apprehension I made the upgrade today.
Did a SuperDuper! HD clone and TM backup first. Already did disk repairs and permissions last week.
The install went smoothly. Around 45 minutes for the actual upgrade. Installed a few of the apps/extras (1 gb worth). Ended up gaining 24+ gb of HD space. The new SL TM backup took a little longer than usual - 8 gb of changes to backup.
Everything is snappier, all apps work, no "incompatible applications" folder in existence, QT10.0 works fine, tested "trimming" a movie clip and it was easy as pie, and my OO 3.1 works like it should. So I'm a happy camper!

Just gotta say "THANKS!" to everyone who gave advice and helped answer questions through the whole thing. My first EVER OS upgrade so anxiety was high and caution was Red Alert. Glad that's over. Maybe some day out of sheer boredom I may attempt a "fresh" install.
