Safari banner screens?

Certain web sites display a "banner screen" of sorts when the site is opened. It's basically a white panel with plain text, which more or less mirrors the text content of the actual site page. On the MBP, it looks like a letter-size document being viewed in MS Word print preview mode - you simply click anywhere outside the panel and it goes away, uncovering the site page and off you go.

On iOS devices, the white banner panel takes up the whole screen and there is no way I can find to dismiss it, thus rendering the site useless. What is going on here?

Can you give a specific example? It is hard to visualize what you are talking about. Do you have any adblocker or antivirus installed and operating? What verson macOS and iOS/iPadOS do you have? Have yout tried a different browser?

I use Adguard on all my devices. Never had an issue.

Latest versions of Sonoma and iOS (the issue is not new and unchanged back through multiple versions). Using AdGuard on MBP only (issue was also present before I started using it).

See attached screen shot - on the MBP, clicking anywhere outside the banner perimeter clears it, banner fills the screen on iOS and cannot be cleared. Behavior on another browser is identical.

Okay, I'm puzzled. It looks like some sort of preview. Could it be a function of your search engine?
For example I use Duck Duck Go, you could test this simply by changing the Search Engine in Settings> Safari> Search Engine.

No effect. After some poking around, there is a MacOS and iOS function called "Reader" and you can set it on/off for specific sites. When I turned it off for the site in question, the banner screen no longer appears.

You may have cracked it. After reading your post I tried a few sites to see what happened. I went to Safari's View menu and chose Show Reader. On some sites, I got a result similar to what you are seeing. On others, such as Bpb's post I got mainly the graphic on a white background with little text.

When you encounter this you can choose Hide Reader from the View menu. I think there's a similar option on the iPhone.

I had forgotten about this feature. I don't use it as often as I used to though I do seem to have some sites that way if I want to go back and read them later. The problem is I usually get buried in so much other stuff I forget about them.
