XP is a HUGE improvement over the prior windows versions. Windows 98 was a train wreck and so was WinME. The only version of windows you could argue is faster is windows 2000. They still haven't fixed the major security problems they have, but xp pro is every bit as stable as os x. Why do you need to delete IE, if you dont like it dont use it.

I dont want ie on my HD because it is so awful and i should have every right not to have it if i don't want it, so i switched :) and it came with ie! AGHHHHH

i dont want IE as my GUI shell, i dont want it as my browser, i dont want it as my windows update

having ie integrated took down the reliability

so i am stuck to 98lite melite with 95 shell, win nt and linux + OS X:)

windows xp sucks - 98 and me are faster but less stable, and 2000 is perfect almost except that it has ie and why are the NT versions so HUGE?!

Like I said, I haven't had windows xp restart on me during the 2.5 years I've used it (8-12 hours a day 7 days a week).

Wow....That's pretty impressive. 2.5 years ago would have been the start of 2002, which would have been just a couple months after XP was released! Now, OS X was released seven months prior to XP, and 10.1 came out in September that year, if I remember correctly. So, has anyone here had OS X for longer than d4rr3n, AND had it not crash or restart EVEN ONCE since then? I mean, there's gotta be someone here who's beaten this guy's record, right?

Why do I seriously and honestly doubt that?

Well, from what I've heard, XP is pretty stable, so it's entirely possible this guy is telling the truth as long as he's taken good care of his computer and not overloaded the hard drive with junk and such. We'll just have to wait until he can verify his previous statements once more.

So, d4rr3n, were you telling the EXACT truth before, that XP has not crashed for you EVEN ONCE since you had it? Because, actually, Witeshark might have a point. Even incredibly stable computers usually tend to crash at least once in a while.

lol :D im not the only one that doubts that

i used xpee before getting a Mac and i KNOW what its like.. its big, its slow (even on a 3ghz machine with 1gb ram) which linux is amazing on :D except that i have to think to use it ;)

why can't i remove wmp and ie, and the other m$ stuff i never use :) that takes up space thats not needed

2000 was pretty stable.. but all m$ did was take 2000, add BLOAT and themes to it then sell it as a home OS and as a "professional" one :D lol to make more $$$ yup

oh and they added that start menu that takes up double the space as well that i turned off as well as the themes

You mean a Home version, a Professional version, and a Media Center version!

BTW, here are the differences between Home and Pro, in case anyone's interested. Nothing too major, really.

I'm definitely telling the truth, actually it's more like 2 years and 3 months. I'll say it again, I have not had windows xp home OR xp pro auto restart or BSOD on me during the 2 years and 3 months i have used them. When i got xp home it was on a secondary machine and i didn't get it online until about 4 months after i got it. So it was just an offline machine for the first 4 months of it's life. My main machine online machine was a windows 98 setup and it was horrible. I'm not exaggerating when i say 98 would crash daily on me. Windows stability has come a long way with XP and IMO if you are having stability problems with XP it is user error of some kind. Either that or you have an infected machine which is likely with windows. The security in XP is a joke and if you aren't extremely careful you can have a virus infested computer in a few minutes. I had an 8 year relative use one of my XP systems for a few hours when i was away, and i came home to a wreaked system.

I absolutely don't doubt that. In my experience, XP was very stable. I can't possibly recall a crash or BSOD I ever got on my XP pro setup.

...XP is stable.
I use it at school, and sometimes use Virtual PC to emulate it. It hasn't let me down at all. Same with 2000. Also use XP at my uncles, use MSN for the Internet, type stuff in Word, play some Pinball.

ME and below is a whole different story, like Mac OS X 10.0 (worse than 9) and below.

I don't doubt that either. I haven't used XP that much, actually, but when I have it's never crashed. It's a similar story with Windows 2000, which I used at my schools every day (I remember I only had like one crash, although occasionally there were a couple problems, but normally it was pretty okay). I've heard about the magnificent stability of XP, and who knows...It might even be slightly more stable than OS X! But that's OK, don't worry...OS X is also incredibly stable...Although there are more factors in stability than just the operating system. The hardware, the amount of RAM, the speed, other programs running and such are also factors for the stability. It's hard to compare OS X and XP in stability. Both of them can crash, but not often. Which one is more stable? Possibly XP, but really, who cares? OS X is still a great operating system, and it's still unbelievably stable.
