Maybe Going To Buy 14-in. MacBook Pro

I've given up on the notebook that's in my signature. It's in the shop for the third time, and the Genius Bar dude was not optimistic that the design flaws would ever be sorted out. So, now I have to come up with another $4k. If anyone has any thoughts on the 14-in., please feel free to share while I do my other research.

No replies, guys? Maybe it's all the floating hearts. Or maybe I worded my post ineffectively. Just looking for any feedback at all on the 14-in model, the M1 Pro chip that it uses, etc.

While my 2017 MBP is in the shop, I'm getting by on my Mid-2010 MBP running OS 10.9.5. There are limitations, but I'm getting by (with fingers crossed).

Didn't realize you had asked a question. You announced your old MBP had died for some unstated reason, now you plan to buy a new 14" MBP.

I have the 16" MBP with M1 Pro. It's fast, long lasting battery life. Nice screen. Not $4000, either. What else do you want to know?

I have owned a 14" M1 max MBP, 64GB, 1TB since November 3rd. It is the best laptop I have ever owned. I use it at home and work where I use Adobe CC to create videos, graphics, and photo editing. This has been the first small laptop I have owned that can out pace my desktop which is a Windows 11 AMD Threadripper, GTX 1080, 64GB and several SSD's. The M1 MBP is just plain fast fast fast - did I mention fast?

I maxed out the specs when I ordered to hopefully future proof it for at least 3-5 years. As videos become higher in resolution the demand on the computer has increased requiring more computing power. This is the first laptop that I have owned that handles 4K with no issues - smooth and fast.

Oh, and battery life is also insane. All day use is not an issue. Unless I am encoding, which eats the battery, it will last all day and then some. Best battery life I have every had.

Um... can you tell I love my 14" M1 max MBP? So said, I highly recommend it!

THANK YOU Lisa, I also am intending to buy the 14" M1 Max on return to Australia hopefully in 10 days time barring a Pos COVID result in 9 days.
My son says that there is no advantage in the 14" screen over the regular, what are your feelings on this?

Not sure what you meant by "regular" but I chose the 16" over the 14" because I used to have a 17" MBP that died, had to settle for a 15" and missed the larger size more than I thought I would. The beauty of the 16" M1 system is that the physical size of the unit is almost exactly what the 15" was, but the bezels on the screen are much thinner, so it has a 16" display in what was the 15" case size.

I had a 13" 2020 MBP. Moving to the 2021 M1 14" was not a big deal size wise. The 13" has a retina display - 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors

The 14" has a Liquid Retina XDR display - 14.2-inch (diagonal) Liquid Retina XDR display;1 3024-by-1964 native resolution at 254 pixels per inch.

Other differences are the 13" has the first M1 processor and the 14" has either the M1 Pro or M1 Max. Either way, all three M1 models will be much faster than the Intel processors that were in earlier models. The 13" has the touch bar and the 14" does not. I personally never really had a whole lot of use for the touch bar which my 2020 MBP had. The 14" will have more ports - an extra USB-C, an HDMI, an SDXC card slot, a head phone jack and magsafe charging. For me this was a big deal as I am always out of ports!

I considered the 14 briefly before buying but I’m glad I got the 16. The screen is amazing and as mentioned, the size on the laptop is almost exactly the same as my older 2013 15. In fact it’s slightly less width wise somehow.

as mentioned, it’s insanely fast (M1max 32gig 1tb)

That's my thinking, too. That's why I expect a purchase to come in on the higher end of the price range.

I've also been looking into updating to a 14" MBP but read somewhere online that if you can wait a few months, the new models coming out in the spring will make the wait worth it...
So I'm going to wait and see, personally.

ah ok, this is the replacement for the air M1. Not for the recently released MacBook Pro 14/16".

The M2 is the next-generation version of Apple silicon, and the first M2 chip will succeed the ‌M1‌ chip. It will not be as powerful as the ‌M1 Max‌ and the ‌M1 Pro‌, but it will be more powerful than the ‌M1‌, the chip that it is designed to replace.

I'd be very surprised to see them update the MacBook Pro line they just released to a whole new gen silicon that quickly. My guess (and what I hear) most likely not til at least next fall at the earliest.

There will always be a newer, greater, faster etc coming out. I always wonder about the people who keep posting they will wait for the next generation before ordering. Do they ever place an order? Just wondering.....

I order when what I have can no longer do what I need it to do.

The only time I waited for a new machine was when I was nursing along my old 15" MBP waiting for the announcement of the 16" M1 MBP. It was only a few weeks of waiting to order, and the fact the 16" was coming was well known. All I had to wait for was the order date to arrive.

@lclev @MacInWin So, you're not concerned about the "beta testing" phenomenon?

For me, I try to get as many years out a machine as I can. For instance, my Mid-2010 MBP will no longer accept any OS updates/upgrades. It's max-ed out. I'll run it until it craps out. But I'm not a gamer or graphics person.
