Hey guys,

I just bought this MBP (2.4Ghz early 2008 model) on eBay. The MBP was in wonderful condition, with no fingerprint on there, in its box, with all software etc...

I took this MBP to my work (1st day of my work) and since I had no bag for it yet, I put it into my shoulder bag that wasn't the best for it. Well, the strap snapped and the bag that was hanging on my shoulder went down - the laptop hit the ground on the corner (No major damage on the outside - a small ding). The corner in question is top right corner (if you are looking at the keyboard in front of you - adjacent to the power supply input)

I started the computer and the screen seems to have these spot light like dark lines that go across it - from bottom down

please see this picture:

I figure from my reasearch that it may have something to do with LED lights?

I tried to open the macbook to see if i can find a way to sort it out (ie if it is a cable that has been pressed or similar - but stopped doing it as i ran into problem with star screws and will continue the work ones i get a screw driver that works tomorrow).

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what it may be?

I am able to open it and am usually pretty careful with these things - i used to put many PCs together back in a day, from scratch, so i know a fair bit about it all inside - but most definitely, i have never handled the macbook pro in this way.

I was hoping to check the video cable (which i did) and then to try and get the LCD itself open (take the shell off) and see if the cable was 'pressed' there perhaps?

The odd thing is that the corner it fell on is AWAY from the video cable...

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you
Lav

ps. there is no warranty on the mbp, so i cannot take it back and would like to try and fix it myself (to save on money) if however oyu know of a good service place in brisbane, AU - please do let me know :)

hey mate,
ive googled for days now - that is why i posted it here, hoping someone encountered a similar problem...

I was hoping it is not the LCD screen but rather one of the cables, either the power cable that powers the LED board or the Video Data cable, although they do not look damaged.

I maybe should also say that when laptop is connected to an external LCD (via DVI out) it is fine - so I hope this means it is not the video card, nor the logic board... but rather the LED lights in the LCD (which i hope is not the case) or the cables powering the LED board or the Video Data...

Again, if anyone has had a similar experience or knows a bit about it - please do drop us a line ;)

Thanks!

Did you find a solution?

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem. My laptop fell out of the side compartment of my backpack and now there is an inch thick vertical line going down my screen. I think something is pressing on the video cable or the video cable is ruined. How did you end up fixing your problem?

Thanks

Howdy,
yap, I pulled a lappy apart, bought a new video cable and replaced it. it worked. ;)

can't really give you more info on it as it was rather long time ago... and my memory of it is rather limited as I've since changed laptops, screens, etc on my macbooks... I do however re-call having found a 'how to' on Google for this problem... with step by step pictures on replacing a video cable. Perhaps look for that and see if you get lucky? I got the cable on eBay for couple of bucks I seem to remember.
good luck

macbook pro late 2008 here. a familiar problem!

try "ctrl" + "<shift>" + "<eject>"

found that tip via youtube and it works for me and others. the image on this thread pops up via google trying to re-find the solution so I thought I would add it here too : )

[list of faults so far with mbp - replaced hard-drive (three times), replaced speakers (three times), new keyboard (twice), new screen connecting cables (twice) - all under apple care but sheesh how about it works without hiccups for a change!]

Putting computer to sleep

Hello, I went on youtube to find out if the 'control' 'shift' 'eject' thing was for real or if it was just some terrible prank that activates the computer self destruct sequence. It appears to be for real, but for some reason my control button never has seemed to do its job. But just simply putting my computer to sleep and taking it out of sleep got rid of the lines.
