When I'm in Mail or TextEdit and type the word "refrigeration" the autocorrect suggestion always pops up to make it capitalized, "Refrigeration". How do I remove that suggestion? There is no entry in the Keyboard/Text preferences and there is nothing in the ~/Library/Spelling folder that I can see that would be causing this.

Do you get the "X" (cancel) option? If you cancel it, it shouldn't ask again. Of course, some apps always capitalizer the first word in a sentence, or even after return/enter.

Chscag - I've already looked at those settings and not what I was looking for

Ferrarr - there is an x like in the pic I attached but even when I click on that it still gets suggested the next time I type the word.

It's like somewhere some setting is saying the word refrigeration should always be capitalized when it shouldn't be

I'm not sure where you are located and therefore don't know whether this will help you.

In System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, on the right, you'' see "Spelling" with a dropdown menu.

This is where you choose your language. There is a setting for most languages, including various "English" such as British English, Indian, Singapore, Australian, Canadian etc - but also a setting for "Automatic by Language".

You might want to play around with these to see if that makes a difference. If you already have your "English" set for your country, you could try Automatic or one of the other English variants.

Worth a consideration.

Also in System Preferences > KB > Text, on the left is a Section called "Replace With". I use this mainly to replace words I frequently misspell with the correct spelling. For example, I often type "teh" which automatically corrects it to "the".

You could replace Refigeration with refrigeration.

And BTW, this is a great place for replacing letters like a "k" followed by an "r" to bring up Kind regards or one I really like is to type @ twice and that brings up my email address.

You set the shortcut and determine the output.

HTH maybe?

Thanks Ian, I also use the replace feature to create shortcuts similar to the kr you do. Messing with the languages (I'm in US and default is English US) also did not help.

I did find another post that mentions that while typing and an autocorrect suggestion pops up, you can press OPT+ESC it will show the possibilities. Attached picture shows that when I type "refri" in TextEdit and hit OPT+ESC twice, the pop up show "Refrigeration" as the first suggestion followed by "refrigeration". I haven't figured out a way to delete "Refrigeration" out of that list so that is my next goal. Where is this list stored?

Thanks for the suggestion, but nope. The auto-correction used by those apps seems to be independent of macOS apps like Mail and TextEdit

Ok, try this, it's a longshot, but might work.

Open Mail, start a new message (you don't need to put anything in the To: block, just tab to the body of the message.

Enter a nonsense word. I used "dsafdsaf" as the junk.
Right click on the junk word and get this menu:
SpellMenu.png

click on "Spelling and Grammar" and then "Show spelling and Grammar" to get this little menu:

You may find "Refrigeration" in that list. Just remove it from there, if it appears.

One other option is to change the setting from checking as you type to check when you send. At least that will stop the immediate changing, which is annoying. That option is in Mail/Preferences/Composing.

Any 3rd party apps in use? I have one called WordService that adds a lot of text correction and formatting options.

Pretty sure none of my 3rd party apps have anything to do with text correction

Wellll.... then I'm pretty sure we've all covered everything that could be the culprit then.

What happens if you type "efrigeration"?
(I had to back up to, um, un-correct that, as AutoCorrect supplied a lower case r )

To clarify a bit.....

The iceman would deliver a large block of ice and place it in the icebox. The enclosure below is where you would put your food. Of course the delivery of ice was ongoing.

Some of you fellows who live up north probably didn't need an icebox to keep your food and beer cold. LOL

That completely flew over my head until I realized the OP was having trouble with "refrigeration". Nice word play. Exactly the kind of thing I would say and also fly over the heads of my audience.

Here you go Patrick:

I'm quite familiar with those ice boxes thanks Charlie, and I actually used to help fill them with ice from the huge big ice blocks that were chopped apart with ice picks then delivered to each house, but I have no idea what they have to do with typing. 😏

Ohhh, geesh, Old Slow brains here and I just got the connection and the suggested fix ... just change the name that won't enter properly to one that will. But I will laugh harder if and when I find out that when typing icebox it is always capitalized for the person having the problem with refrigerator!!! 😏 :laugh
