M3 Processor Rumors

So, the latest rumor is that the M3 will be in new Macs a lot sooner than everyone might have expected. Like...at the end of this coming summer!

Even more interesting, unlike the modest increase in performance from the M1 to the M2, the jump in performance from the M2 to the M3 might be BIG!!

Let's hope that all of these rumors come to fruition!

Ah ok. Perhaps I’m going to wait for the M3max for upgrading the pro tools system to a desktop.

I have been waiting to see just what the M3 will offer. I have the M1 max and it has been awesome. May or may not be tempted to upgrade - will wait and see.

Yeah I’m Uber happy with the power of this 16 M1max, I’ve been running it now as my main pro tools rig and between 18 sharc dsp cores and the M1max I have yet to see the ceiling on audio power. It there’s still time, and many virtual instruments to discover!

I’d like to have a desktop in the studio at some point, maybe the M3 will be the one. Or, M6. Who knows.

Apple is trying to navigate having two Macs at that level (Mac Mini and Mac Studio). The idea is that the Mac Mini is entry level and Mac Studio is professional grade. If they make the Mac Mini more like Mac Studio Mini, then the price would increase negating the group they're going after.

That sounds like a good part of Moore's laws and predictions are still very much with us.

I have the 14" MBP with the M1 Pro chip an 16GB RAM and cannot imagine why I would need more computing power than it delivers for the tasks I perform.
The only advantage I see with the imminent release of the M3 is the possibility that the M1/M2 models might drop a little in price which would be a plus as we intend to replace my wife's 13" 2018 Intel MBP next year sometime.

I think they are still counting, but but some interesting and already known facts:

M2 Ultra has 134 billion transistors. M3 Ultra will likely have over 200 billion.Jul 25, 2023


Like the ‌M2‌ chip, the M3 chip will feature an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, but we will see more notable performance improvements when it comes to the higher-end chips. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the most powerful M3 chip, the Ultra, will have a 32-core CPU and up to an 80-core GPU.Sep 8, 2023

And it seems it will do all that increased work at faster speeds with very little increase in power consumption. Quite an engineering achievement actually.

I’m hitting my machines hard and these new machine barely sweat as it is. It seems like apple is really accelerating fast. In every sense.

I think it depends more on the varying (Mx [base] or Pro or the Max or Pro) options, just like their portable models.

Having done a lot of back and forthing over mini vs studio, I had found it odd how the mini tricked out at cores 12/19 was close to the cost of a studio base model, but the studio had more way more GPU power and double the ram speed. One can argue that one doesn’t need the GPU power nor would they see the ram speed, but I do know that say in my world, audio programs are becoming much more GPU hungrier and that’s only going to get worse now that these machines are available, and I tend to look at 5+ years down the road.

tho not sure how much more than that you can get these days, my 2017 27” quad core i7 iMac can no longer even install the latest OS and it’s only 6 years old.
