I drew the plans for our cats' cat tree. A guy I knew at work was a carpenter and built it for me/them/us. I just covered the thing with carpet and they climb right up to the ceiling like telephone pole workers.
I should scan them and post them here in case someone would be interested in building the same thing for themselves.

thats very interesting we've been thinking about building one. But costco has a good sized one for $100. Figured the carpet and materials would cost more... how'd it work out for you? id like to see it

Well this guy built it to resist bombings I think. It weighs a ton. He worked in a hospital and they have special plywood sheets there, thicker and with more layers per sheet. He charged me for his time. The carpet we just got a colour we liked and you just need to have it cover the central post and the platforms where the cats will sleep: it's not like you need a huge piece like to cover a bedroom floor.
So I don't think that cost us a lot that was 6 years a go and that thing is still standing upright. The carpet might need some replacement in the back of the thing but other than that it's still going strong.
I'll look for the plans I drew and maybe I jotted down some notes on them for the material.
