It's always difficult to tell which OS is better...

At least here's a little something I wanted to add:

Windows XP Home Edition 229,- Euro
Windows XP Professionnal 325,- Euro
Mac OS X.3 129,- Euro
(prices at Amazon Germany)

WinXP Home lacks some networking features of WinXP Pro.
Mac OS X has even more networking features than XP Pro (integrated Apache, FTP etc.)
Mac OS X includes DVD player, which actually DOES play a DVD movie without additional codecs (unlike Win Media Player).
It also includes iMovie (WAY better and easier than Movie Maker on Win)
iPhoto (no similar soft in Win)
iTunes (I'd say it's better than Media Player, but that's a personal opinion)
Developer tools (no such thing in Windows)

I surely forgot some others, but what I wanted to show is that, out of the box, Mac OS X is better equipped, and it's way cheaper than Windows (for the price of XP home, you get the Mac OS X family pack, means 5 licenses!).
This is a pure OS comparison, no hardware or extra software bundle involved.

Allthough this still doesn't tell that OS X is better, but one thing's for sure:
with Mac OS X, you'll get more for the money (and even have some left ;-) )

For Apple hardware, it's a completely different story, though...

Hmm, from what I've heard, Windows MovieMaker 2 is better than iMovie 4 in most parts. Or are you talking about MovieMaker 1? Because MovieMaker 1 IS inferior to iMovie 4, no question.

Ok, my bad on this one...I had Movie Maker 1 in mind. :)

Movie Maker 2 is in fact better than iMovie 4. I might be wrong, but I think MM2 is not included in WinXP, or is it? I had to download and install it seperately on a friends PC.
Don't forget, I was talking about both OSes out of the box, without additionally installed software.

But that still doesn't change the fact that OS X is cheaper and includes (generally speaking) better software than WinXP.

I mean, TextEdit in Mac OS X is even able to open and save MS Word format. As far as I remember, neither Notepad nor Wordpad in Windows can do that.

But what I honestly missed on my Mac the first day I played with it was Solitaire... no such thing in OS X ;-)

Thanx Graphite :)
I would say the information on that link just sums it up and is the final answer to the thread title:
"Just the facts...OS X vs XP"

The question of the best OS is one of the oldest, one that I think will never have a satisfying answer that suits everyone...this topic can be discussed eternally...
or at least, as long as there will be both systems ;-)

Another curious feature in xp home is networking takes about 3 or 4 times longer then pro... Wonder why...

Yeah, XP Pro is much better for networking than Home. In fact, the networking are the main differences between the two.

Also, when you're talking about software being pre-installed or having to download it..Is it really such a big deal to have to download Windows Movie Maker? I know it's not QUITE as convenient as having it pre-installed, but most people have internet access, so it's not really a big deal to download it from Microsoft's website. I mean, it takes very little time for most people, so it's practically like MovieMaker 2 DOES come with XP.

Well, if you only have a 56k modem connection (still the biggest part of the internet user, worldwirde) it can be a big deal...

I am so glad I switched from Windows(I used it a lot in school) to a Mac(at home, and even at school!)

today, I was trying to get onto to livejournal.com to access my journal, and the site's having technical difficulties. this explained it all:

"I'm not trying to advocate switching to Mac OS X or Linux, I'm just saying Windows seems to invite viruses and trojans, and it's annoying from my perspective, so take care of your computers for the sake of the entire broken internet."
-site admin

so for any of you recent switchers, feel really happy because Macs rarely, if ever get viruses.

be proud! :D

P.s.: I find that the Mac system works better for me, has fewer crashes, and is just more fun to play with.
