I think the point is, Sly, that when you backup something, however well that part went, there is an inherent expectation that should the need arise, a restore can be totally relied upon.

That is the measure by which one judges the product.

I agree completely. As I say I haven't had to do a restore in some time though I'm tempted to try it and see if I have the same issues. I'm certainly not going to rely just on that as a restore point given the experiences others have had.

In all fairness....

My issue with iMazing is the iOS update feature, that failed couple of times before, but had been able to restore the backed up image, created prior to the update. This time, it had not been able to restore the image. It's partially my fault using the update feature, I should have seen it coming to this point.

In retrospect, restoring my iPhone wasn't that hard, thanks to ferrar's help. The main issue had been, that I had not done this level of restore and had been apprehensive about doing the steps necessary for a functioning iPhone. It'll be a breeze next time...;)

Other features, like backing up and restoring from backup still working just fine. Will these feature continue to work without issues? Time will tell, but certainly iMazing is not the only solution for backing up my iPhone.

iMazing support keeps blaming hardware as source of the issue, quote:

iOS reports the specific error code via Apple drivers. The exact error code iOS reported was "14" which indicates an error with USB connection, as indicated by Apple support page.

I have forwarded the case to our developers, so you can be sure that there's nothing wrong going on on our side.

As it is the weekend, they will get back in touch on Monday.

Kind regards,

My view of the same in the response below, quote:

iMazing has no issues with backing up and restoring from backup, with the same Windows 10 OS, USB port and original Apple USB cable. Nor does iTunes have any issues with the same hardware.

The error 14 might be an all-in-one type of solution to all software-related problems as well. At the point of operation failed, iMazing had full control of the iPhone and iOS had been inactive. It’s questionable how would iOS report the error at this point.

We just disagree on the root cause of the issue and either way, thank you for forwarding this issue to the developers.

Regards,

iMazing on the Windows platform, may also have issues related to the Apple's iTunes driver. Apple no longer develops iTunes drivers for windows 10 platform, Microsoft does that for couple of years by now. As the matter of fact, even iTunes in itself installed from the Windows Store. iMazing reinstalling the old, no longer developed Apple driver could be the source of this issue as well. Especially knowing how frequently Windows 10 and the associated drivers are update; the current schedule is twice a year.

I think iMazing has issues with the error 14, if that is what they are blaming. Their USB interface interactions were, as I said, very dodgy and unreliable. Ports and cables that worked well with other software would consistently fail with iMazing. Their approach to error handling seemed to be, "We're outta here!"

Thanks for the heads up about the Windows version. I have had a license for it for a while now, but we haven't put it on SWMBO's machine yet. I've debated using it instead of the Windows version of iTunes. She usually leaves this stuff to me, and I prefer to use the Mac, but she needs something she will use.

Yes this thread is interesting. I have a friend who has an iPhone 10 and a Windows PC. Having some of the same issues. Thanks for the postings.

In all fairness, there are some advantages for installing iTunes for Windows from the MS Store:

On the other hand, separating iTunes and its driver(s) development is not the brightest idea. Third-party apps, like iMazing, had issues with the standalone iTunes and the Apple developed drivers for Windows. The MS store edition added more problems, or magnified the issues at best.

The Apple iTunes and MS driver developers do communicate to address version changes, but evidently not too well. Or at least, they don't really listen to third-party apps developers...

I have had I few issues with iMazing myself. I don't advise updating apps or iOS as I have had issues with both. As others have already stated it used to be good and still has a few very handy features I do like such as a scheduled daily backup via WiFi and a pleasing UI but if it cannot be relied on for restore it's just taking up space. I'm finding the Finder method more useable and an iCloud backup daily for insurance, I do all my updates/upgrades on the iphone/iPad now as required because my internet connection is so much more reliable here in Australia. I will probably trash iMazing.
