Ok, I made the mistake of deleting Coremedia, so I recently had to reinstall my operating system (which is fine, I was still using Mavericks). In this new OS X, I'm now getting the same problem with images only on my Desktop (not in Finder) now popping up in something called "ColorSync Utility". I tried to get rid of this/uninstall it, but I get a pop-up saying my OS X needs it to run. How do I stop this thing from running?

Things in red = things that were red on my EtreCheck.

Safari Extensions = Getting rid of these (except Adblock) will be my start.

3rd Party Preference Panes = "3rd party items", but these all look like things I need...

Bad Fonts = These also might be causing some trouble and I also will try deleting.

Diagnostic Events = Finder and other things failing after I accidentally deleted Coremedia. They all work now.

I believe you that some third-party product is making Coremedia run, but I don't know what it is. Once again, this only happened after I updated Firefox, so I'm thinking maybe I should also delete Firefox and replace it with the old version I had? (It's saved on my disk drive.)

It's far more likely to be the 7 year-old internet plugins at fault. Try updating all those.

Ok, so after much trial and error, I managed to update the old plugins (Wacom and HueyPro) and so far the problem seems to be gone. The only thing is I had to change gif. back to opening in Preview once, so hopefully that's not still a sign of things. Thank you for your advice! I will update this forum if the problem continues.

Ok, it's still happening: went to open one file, it wants to open in Illustrator. Went to open another file, it will open in Preview but it shows the weird/wrong icons. However, I noticed the problem doesn't come up as often as it did before, so at least I think we're making some kind of headway.

And this is after I fixed up the Wacom and HueyPro plugins and Restarted my computer. Right away, Firefox is all the way up to 114% and in the red. What is causing that!?

I also noticed from this test that "plugin-container" is on the list twice, which I think is odd; on the other hand, "com.apple.coremedia.videodecoder" is now gone. So again, it looks like progress. So what else should I change?

Sorry about the multiple posts, but I used EasyFind to look up "firefox" on my computer. I found I still had multiple "txt./dmg." files with names like "Firefox 2.0" and "3.0" that I didn't know about. I deleted those and Restarted my computer. I've opened up Firefox, Photoshop, Safari and other programs I normally use to see that none of these are spurring the problem again. I suspected from early on that Firefox had something to do with this, since this didn't happen until after I updated Firefox. However, with the other old plugins/ drivers updated I think my computer is running batter which also helped possibly solve it. Again, it seems the problem is now gone, but I'm not holding my breath until a few days have gone by without this happening again.

The d*** problem is still here! However like before it seems to be happening less and less, and now it is happening when I drag and drop a picture into my computer for saving. I like that the problem is becoming more scarce but still, I hate the uncertainty of whether something will open up in the wrong program.

Do you want iPhotoPhotocast to continue? I'd disable it.

Disabled and deleted, along with a few other old things I don't use. Restarted my computer. Everything is fine until I drag-and-drop an image from online. When the picture is loading onto my Desktop, the image is that ugly "orange PNG rectangle over white sheet of paper" image instead of the normal "preview icon". However, I also noticed the problem has become sporadically lessened even more now: the first time I dragged a PNG image onto my Desktop, all the PNGs wanted to open in something other than Preview. Now I went and did something else and came back to see that everything was set to open in Preview; then when I dragged over an image offline for a second tie, now everything wants to open in Photoshop. After a few minutes of waiting, suddenly things are back to normal with everything set to open in Preview. So again, it looks like we're making progress!

Now I get red text out of nowhere: it is now saying my Flash Player is out of date, but when I hit the "Update" link and try to update it from Adobe, I get a message saying, "Adobe Flash Player cannot be installed because a newer version of this software is already installed." I have Version 27.0.0.187, but EtreCheck is telling me mine is Outdated. What am I missing here?

I've gone through the last EtreCheck and deleted more old items, but I may have missed others. I'm also not sure what is safe to delete and what isn't. Any help is still appreciated.

The latest version of Adobe Flash Player is 28.0.0.126, therefore, you do not have the latest version installed. Open the Flash Player in your System Preferences and click on "check now". That should take you to the Adobe site and offer to install the update.

Thank you for the information. When I went into Flash Player, it actually says I do have the latest version; I'm thinking the Version 27.0.0.187 that shows in my EtreCheck was somehow left behind and perhaps might be still causing my Preview problem. I'll try deleting that and Restarting. If the problem persists, I'll update this thread.

(Could've sworn I posted a comment on this thread, but now it's gone/deleted.) Thank you for the information. When I went into SP/Flash Player it says I actually have the latest version (28), so not sure why EtreCheck shows that I have a 27 Version on my computer. I tried getting rid of that as well as a no-longer-working-with-Firefox Java and see if my Preview/image problem goes away.

It didn't. I'm still having this problem with pictures not opening in Preview after I drag-and-drop them onto my computer.

Here is the latest EtreCheck:

EtreCheck version: 3.4.6 (460)

Just to make sure, the app set to open files is not generic, but specific to file types. That is, not all image files are set to open in Preview if you set .jpg to do so. You also have to set .tif, .raw, .bmp, .whatever also to open in Preview. You mentioned drag/drop files. Where is the drag from? What is the extent of the file? (that's the .xxx part) Is that specific .xxx set to open in Preview? I am asking because you have posted innumerable etrecheck output, but despite having done just about everything, are still experiencing the issue with the dragged/dropped files. Also note that files missing the extent won't open automatically either because they have no extent.

On another note, I'd suggest a backup. According the the last report, it's been a while.

+1 to all that Jake said and more.

I'm just getting around to reading over this thread and some long and possibly surplus EtreCheck summaries, and I'd suggest getting back to some basic stuff, again as Jake has mentioned above.

Right now there's too much shrapnel about to be able to trace the source of bomb properly.

To answer the above questions:

Before the problem started happening, all my files that were not psd. were set to open in Preview. I was aware beforehand about the kind of program that Preview is, and I'm also aware that files with no extant are a different thing, but even those would always open in Preview. I honestly can't remember ever having to do much work in setting up Preview to open these different files, even when I first got my computer in 2010.

The browser I am dragging the image files from is either Safari or Firefox, and Firefox is always the one that causes the files to change from opening in Preview to opening in Photoshop. When I am dragging pictures over from Safari, they at first appear very briefly as Preview icons before loading as thumbnails of their respective image. The same used to be for Firefox, and it used to be for every png, jpeg, tiff, and bmp file that I dragged and dropped onto my desktop. However, now when I drag files over from Firefox, they at first appear briefly as these ugly icons with rectangle shapes with the file type name ("PNG") on them over a white sheet of paper before loading as the thumbnail. This problem never occurred with my older version of Firefox, only with this new version.

The extent of the files I drag-and-drop is either png, jpeg, or gif. Rarely anything else. I don't have rawr files on my computer.

I have opened up another thread with this same issue over at Apple.com to see if this might be an issue with my older computer. Over there, a user suggested that I check for the problem in both another account and in Safe Mode. I did both and the problem actually occurs in both, even in Safe Mode. I have relayed this information to them as well and am awaiting a response.

(And I'm sorry about the EtreChecks, but I don't know any other way to show progress/hidden issues within my computer as I am progressing. Also, the backups that you see in the EtreCheck are old drives I don't use; I have a third drive that I use which is up to date.) If I forgot to mention anything, feel free to let me know.

At this point and now at 35 posts with various suggestions for your various problems and seemingly growing, I'd seriously recommend you consider getting some Mac help from a good authorized commercial Mac tech to get your Mac running as it should.
This does not include the techs at any Apple store, but a good Apple dealer or independent Mac tech. Many are also mobile in most areas if that helps.

There are almost too many problems that the basic fixes are not fixing.

There's even a possibility that your HDD (hard drive) is failing which can cause settings etc. to go goofy. It is ten years old which is almost past it's prime and normal longevity.

Anyway, I suggest doing so would be well worth the money, but maybe some other techs here may have other suggestions but I think they've already been exhausted IMHO.

Get rid of Firefox. If the problem started with the most recent version of FF, then get rid of it.

It seems a bit odd that Firefox would have been responsible for the change but I'm getting lost with all the various problems that seem to be happening. But anything's possible but I wonder if removing it will fix things and if things might self heal.

Anyway, always possible and worth a try and maybe running a few maintenance utilities like Disk Utility and Onyx etc. might help.

Patrick, in post #35, he said
Firefox is always the one that causes the files to change from opening in Preview to opening in Photoshop
That's why I said get rid of FF. If it is ALWAYS the cause of the problem, then there is no reason to keep it.

I was afraid of that, but I guess I've been putting it off for long enough. Even my family has told me it's time for a desktop computer, even though I love the versatility of a 17" laptop.

I just wanna thank everyone here for your help. I don't see why the post count is an issue, since each one that was made lessened the effects of the problem and helped me eliminate any potential aggravators in my system. I have one last idea on how to fix the problem, and that's to go back in Time Machine and replace my current drive with the one I saved before the problem happened (and just replace everything else with my currently saved drives.) It will possibly be a long process, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

I also do not think Firefox itself is the problem here, since I've been using Firefox for a long time and only now am I having issues with it. I think it is simply the version of Firefox I upgraded to, hence why I'm going to revert back to the older version on my drive. If this does not work out, then I will begin looking at new computers.

Again, thank you to everyone for your help.
