That is the conclusion I have come to Randy. I have to go out just after lunch, but not for long, so I will see if I can get it done this afternoon. Unless anyone would like my dental appointment  ?

I have been reading through the instructions about the Erase Assistant

Under the Erase your Mac heading it says

  1. Choose Apple menu
    2f77cc85238452e25cb517130188bf99.png
    > System Preferences.
  2. In the menu bar, choose System Preferences > Erase All Content and Settings.

In my Sys Preferences there is no "Erase All Content and Settings" that I can see?

I will contact AppleCare and let them guide me through I think and then if it all goes toes (or something) up .....

It's in the MENU BAR, top bar of the screen, not in the System Preferences pane. And it works. I used it just a few days ago and it is much easier than the previous nuke and pave steps. It prompts you for what it is doing and what you need to do and then it just wipes out the drive and puts the OS on it again, all like it came from the factory. And at M1 speeds, it doesn't take very long, either.

On the Menu Bar at the top right is Creative Cloud, Bluetooth, keyboard layout showing British and French layouts, WIFI, login window, Time Machine, Spotlight Search, the little light/dark symbol, Siri and the date.time.

And at the moment, on the left hand side there is the normal Apple sysbol and Safari drop down menues.

So someone has knicked my Erase Assistant.

I have been on to AppleCare and was lead through updating from 12.0.1 to 12.1, nothing more. And I was told that it was all that I need to do. I didn't really have the choice of arguing as I don't have the knowledge to argue on it? I was then told to download the Rapport app again and use the uninstall app in it to get rid of everything to do with it.

And now I can't even find the blasted site to do the download!

No. Open System Preferences so that in the upper left corner, next to the Apple logo it says "System Preferences." Now click on "System Preferences" on that bar. Ta-da!

John, next year, when I'm planning to be back in the UK, we'll plan to get together and hoist a pint in joint commiseration of things Apple.

I will be out tomorrow morning trying to wrestle the control out of my 'Radio Control' model slope soaring gliders and watching to see who takes who out in the afternoon's F1 final round at Adubie Babie or whatever beach it is, so I will see about starting back on here errrr  soon?

OT... But how did you make out with your RC glider model slope soaring competition and are there any links to any videos or anything...???

I hope you and your glider did well... 😇

Sounds good to me Jake. We are just a few miles north of the M4 and as you musy know that's one of the main east/west routes so it should be simple enough?

Not many comps at this time of the year Patrick and it was an awful day weather wise, wet and miserable. RC aircraft and rain don't mix so it was literally a washout.

This is the photo/video page of our club web site. Some good videos on there and they show most of our flying sites. They face different ways for different winds and Minchinhamptom Common where we go when there's not enough wind for some flat field flying. The more recent stuff is put on a closed page on Farsebook and I don't use it.

Confusion has taken a strong hold in our household so I'm not too sure just what I have done, but I now have a clean working system with the system's attached applications, i.e. the ones that come with the downloaded OS. I had fun and games getting past the step for choosing the wifi connection due to the icon being hidden in the top right of the screen and about twice thew size of a bit of dust! The bloke at the AppleCare help desk was brilliant and talked me through that one.

So I am now at the point of recovering folders from Time Machine.

As per Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac

Easy peasy? NO. Time machine opens OK and I can select folders OK, but the Restore button stays greyed out and unavailable! It would appear that although when I look at the Time Machine HDD in Finder all of the backups have been done, but it seems as if the system isn't recognising that the back up exists?

At the moment I am getting the TM back up to date on our old iMac and I am hoping that it will be possible to use that to get my Mail application on the new iMac up to date?

I am pleased to say that all, or almost all, seems to be running fine at last. I now have a speedy system running 12.1 and it's looking good and thank you one and all for your help!

I said almost all because I am getting a popup telling me that Time Machine has failed due to not enough room on the disk.TM is running on an external 1tb HDD. I have a 1tb SSD in the machine.

I was under the impression that the TM HDD would overwrite the earliest entries when the disk got full and carry on just doing a 'wrap around'? Is this the way it works or will I have to go in each time and delete entries? If that is the case then unless I change the schedule I will spend half my time deleting entries?

Is there anything else on the TM drive? Backups from a previous machine? They way TM works changed with Monterey (or maybe Big Sur), and the new backups are not compatible with the older ones. So, if there is an older set of TM backups in the old format, TM will not delete them automatically.

Once we sort out what it taking up space on the drive, it will, within the backups of the new system, delete the oldest to make room for newer ones.

You may be better off starting fresh with Time Machine. Deleting entries manually will take a very long time to accomplish. You can only do the deletions within Time Machine and can only deleted them one at a time.

Do you really need those older backups?

Thanks for mentioning this Charlie and I was just about to ask wouldn't it be better to just wipe the TM backup drive and start afresh???

But I would still be inclined to have and use an additional backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or similar.

Just be aware that a clone is not as useful in the Mx Macs. You don't need it to restore the OS, it's already in a secure enclave and can be restored from there. You can't boot from an external if the internal storage has hardware issues. So a clone is useful, but not as useful as it was pre Monterey and Mx Macs.

Not going to work Patrick. CCC and SuperDuper both will not create a bootable clone if the machine is running Monterey.

What Jake stated is now the norm.

So that explains my typing. It's not me; it's the keyboard.

Bootable or not, I would still prefer to have a Carbon Copy Cloner backup.

They seem to be much more reliable.
