For the DVD is genuine and i believe is working properly...

What does the OS install DVD look like? What color is it…what graphics are on it?

Thanks for the info. Just to be sure. Can you check the disk…it should not say anything like "Upgrade Disk" or "Drop In Disk".

Any idea guys!!! pls help

Your Mac is model MA456LL. It's a late 2006 iMac Core 2 Duo 2.16 (24-Inch).

Is your hard drive that you installed formatted properly? Should be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

I happen to know from experience with that exact 24" iMac that when the Hard Drive dies that is exactly what it does. It has nothing to do with the video Chip at all.

I am not sure why the user is having issues but I feel it's a wrong OSX install DVD.

It certainly looks like the proper 10.6 install disk.:)

As I mentioned earlier in the thread. If this computer has no hardware problems…then there's no reason why this disk shouldn't work.

So far I know that you've tried this Snow Leopard install DVD…and you tried to install Mavericks on a USB stick.

I should mention that one reason why Mavericks (10.9) won't install is because the max. OS on this computer is 10.7.5. Mavericks is 10.9. But OS 10.6 Snow Leopard should install fine.

It comes down to this. If this computer is working ok (except for the internal optical drive)…then either the external optical drive being used is faulty…or the OS 10.6 install disk is damaged.

I was a bit confused by this post. If you're saying that you want to boot the iMac from an external HD…yes that should work (as long as the OS version on the external HD is compatible with the iMac). Not more than OS 10.7.5.

If you are able to do this…then you can format the new HD in the iMac using Disk Utility.

You could also try this (Target Disk Mode) if you have the proper cable:
