My HP officejet Pro 8600 is acting up. It is not communicating with my computers, although it is connected to my network. I have reset the printing system several times, reinstalled the printer, but the printing seems to not receive the transmission. It seems to think that I want to save everything as a pdf rather than print it. Anyone have a similar problem?

Well, you really need to provide more information before anyone can even guess at a potential solution: 1) What computer (model/year) are your using; 2) What OS X is installed; 3) How is your network setup (type of modem/router/ISP); 4) How is the printer integrated into your network, i.e. cabled (USB or ethernet) or wireless; 5) When the printer was working, what changes may have occurred, e.g. upgrading to a new OS, such as Yosemite; and 6) What have you tried to resolve the problem? Might just get us started to respond - Dave :)

1. I have a macbook pro retina late 2012
2. I have the latest yosemite installed
3.I have an airport exteme ac router and Cox is my ISP
4. The printer is wirelessly connected and is seen by my network and reports itself connect to the network.
5. The only change ot the system is that I found that my firewall was turned off and I turned it back on. However, as part of my efforts, I turned it back off again, to no effect.
6. So far, I have reset the printing system several times, and have run the trouble shooter several times. The troubleshooter at first talked about Mac address filtering, but my going into airport utility disclosed no opportunity to change that. I have deleted and reinstalled off of HP's site the HP utility several and reinstalled but when I finish installing and it attempts to open the HP utility. it crashes before it can open. Now instead of saying there is a problem, when I attempt to install the printer in preferences, it says it cannot communicate with the printer, even though the printer shows up on my network and says it is on the network. Any attempt to print, prior to it completely failing to install the printer also has it apparently trying to save the printing to PDF rather than print it.
At this point, I am completely out of communication with the printer.

One other change about the time of the problem is that I got a synology 415+ for christmas, and hooked it up to the network at around the same time.

Thanks for the GREAT info! You're up on this much more than I can probably help - sorry.

My only thoughts are: 1) Power recycle the printer, in not already done; and 2) Detach the Synology from your system to see if it returns to its prior state (my assumption is that you may have already given this a try)?

Otherwise, I hope some of our experienced mods will 'chime in' w/ some advice - Dave :)
