the "status offine" refers to the "pauls mac" printer that is shared over the network and that Macbook computer was not on. I am trying to directly use the same Canon printer with my Imac - which does not detect it.

oh, and, yes, I did the full printer reset procedure (twice). I do appreciate all these suggestions and assume that one will finally work!

Here's an older trouble shooting procedure to check out. it's from Brother but the fixes are the same:
http://support.brother.com/g/b/faqe...prod=hls7000dn_us_eu_as&faqid=faq00002646_001

and maybe Apple's latest:
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21719?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US

And if nothing else, give your local country area Canon support tech a call and see if they don't have a solution or at lest a very good discount on a newer model that's compatible with ALL your Macs and their OS X versions. The last is critical IMHO.

Did you install the software on the iMac, before connecting the printer?

Based on some of my past experiences with Canon I bet that printer wants you to connect the printer before any software installation.

I have tried that site and downloaded all the relevant files. I am, however, not able to actually find those files in my system! I don´t see how I could do anything wrong because the download was one of those open box type installers. Oh well. Running out of optionss.

Where are downloads usually stored on your Mac. The default location for most browsers is a Download folder within your user folder. If you have reset it to something else check there. The file is called mcpd-mac-mg5100-11_7_1_0-ea17_2.dmg

The same file downloads from the Europe site as well mcpd-mac-mg5100-11_7_1_0-ea17_2.dmg
http://www.canon-europe.com/support...rivers&language=EN&os=OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)

Maybe time and worth the money to bring in a good Mac tech to get things setup and working. ;)

PS: does that printer have any setup directions in its small display screen you could use???

I found my Canon Pixma MG5620 (only wireless connection used) has some setup features via its LED control screen that are not available on any Mac.

This really should be working and I'm running out of ideas here.

BTW for those who have studied this feature more than I have here's a thought: Is it possible that the System Integrity Protection (SIP) feature is interfering in some way with what the driver needs to do in order to work properly/ I doubt it but thought I'd ask.

I don't know where the OP lives, but I find it odd that neither the Canadian nor US Canon sites lists the Canon mg5150 in its support site, yet the UK, Europe and Australia sites do.

Can that actually make a difference for Mac compatibility and working…??? I sure wouldn't think so, but who knows…

I don't know and haven't dealt with SIP too much except to find it can be a PITA!!! But one would think it should provide some dialog or warning if something was amiss. Should, that is… I would think…

But you make a good point and I for one would sure be disabling SIP in this case as nothing else seems to be working — IF the OP has followed all the suggestions. And it sounds like it with all the Xs he's collecting on his list.

PS and OT: I'd also suggest changing one's desktop for the default downloads folder so things can be seen and found easily and then dealt with. Like maybe Trashing it when finished rather than filling up some "downloads" folder that many forget about or can't even find when it often gets moved off the Dock…

Same here.

I don't know if there's anything new or different here, but it indicates that it should work and things are compatible:
How-to QuickStart with Canon MG5100 Scanner on Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

EDIT:
I thought at first that the 5100 was just the series, but it seems it's actually a model so not what I expected.

Time to call Canon tech support…

It's really unfair that the major names in printers all favor Windows PC's and only state they are Mac OS compatible which means very little when it comes to support. It's about time Apple produced a printer of their own.
I have a HP Envy series WiFi scanner/printer and it took me half a day to initially set up, including an expensive call to their support in the USA.

Apple produced it's own printers for quite a while in the early days. Over time there was at least two dot matrix models (ImageWriter I and II), the StyleWriter series of inkjet (at least 2), and the LaserWriter series. All were real work horses that did not seem to be nearly as temperamental as some of the printers of today. I seriously doubt Apple goes back into the printer business.

Rod Sprague already mentioned that URL in his post #26, the problem seems to be that it doesn't work with El Cap'n for the OP for some reason.

Don't know why they wouldn't work unless Canon is spoofing us? OK, it's not that drivers won't work, it's because the OP doesn't know how to find or apply them.

I have tried that site and downloaded all the relevant files. I am, however, not able to actually find those files in my system! I don´t see how I could do anything wrong because the download was one of those open box type installers. Oh well. Running out of optionss.

You have to attach your Canon via USB first, turn it on and then when it appears click on "options", "drivers". Use the down arrow to select the driver you downloaded. That's where it will appear otherwise you won't be able to find the driver since it's hidden.
