Yea agreed, I'm spending a little over 3 grand canadian on this new MBP and If i wasn't getting the educational discount I wouldn't be getting this computer because it would be closer to 3,400, plus taxes on top and everything..it's expensive. I would have ended up getting the 20" imac instead, for around 2,600 so they're making more money from me. I'm not really scamming the system, a member of my household is eligable for the discount so why not capitalize on it.

I don't think that they check one way or the other. Had you just put it in your name and said you were a student and some random local university, it would have worked. Not that I recomend doing that, but do you really think it'd be worth their time to actually check if people were really students? Most schools wouldn't even bother a request for confirmation that you were really a student of theirs. It'd be a pain all the way around.

What about alumni? I was considering ordering some stuff through my college's apple store online, but I suppose I could just go to my local applestore and show my student ID. I still have it from a couple years ago.

The way it works is once you're not a student, you're not eligible. Otherwise, anyone who graduated high school could get the discount; pretty much anyone who can operate a computer to begin with.

I don't even understand why people are asking questions like these, are you looking for someone to have tried something like this and say from past experience "Yes I scammed the system" ?
It's not like people from Apple don't read these forums..

They should at least offer small business discounts as well. The company I work for is still small and money for things like video editing software (Final Cut) and a machine worth running it on (Mac Pro) are pricey. Every little savings counts and the only people who get a break are students. Don't get me wrong, I was a college student before so I know what it's like, but they aren't the only ones who are deserving of a break.

p.s. That statement isn't meant as some sort of catalyst for an argument. Just saying it would be nice if they offered other discounts or promotions for "normal" people and/or businesses as well.

Most computer and software companies only offer volume discounts to businesses.

Just wanted to let you know this already exists, but with larger companies, not small ones (that I know of). I can, for instance, log in just as you would for an education discount under your school name, log in under my company name instead and receive the same discount. Some higher corporate positions get insane discounts...

While the little guy picks up the remainder of the bill.
Why not drop discounts across the board and lower the price accordingly for all.

my 2 cents

Here here! haha. But it's Apple. I guess it's just one of the things you have to learn to live with. I love the products and quality is typically great so I don't mind spending a bit more for them, but sometimes they really do stick it to you :D

i dont have no mac's
why dont they just give away computers for free!!!! that will surely improve how many computers are out there in the market....in one years time everyone in the world will own a mac. andthen apple will go out of business.

you people all need to realize that this student discount is meant for students so they can purchase a computer because they are already going broke from paying for their college tuition.

if they wanted a discount available for the general population they would put out a deal every so often. but they dont do that for very good business reasons. mostly because they dont have to.

so you all go and run around trying to scam a program that is meant to help the poor college kids get by in life. and i will go report this thread to the mods so they lock it up so you all can stop talking

That's constructive input...

If you think that's why the student discount exists... then you live in a small box. Sure, college students get their computers and Apple comes out as a good samaritan. There are plenty of other reasons in the interest of business.

so you all go and run around trying to scam a program that is meant to help the poor college kids get by in life. and i will go report this thread to the mods so they lock it up so you all can stop talking

Talk about neurotic? Who is "you all?" Nobody in this thread has shared ideas with the intent of scamming, we are merely discussing the issue, as is the purpose of a forum. The one member who used his sister's ID is using her only purchase of a Macbook, whether she gets it or he gets it, who cares? "Help the poor college kids get by in life?" A bit melodramatic don't you think? Instead of throwing around accusations and threats... maybe you should just relax and try adding something valuable.

My statement of dropping discounts period and dropping prices across the board such that: with discounts a=$2, b=$4, c=$6 and without discounts a=$4, b=$4, c=$4 where a=higher corporate positions (who surely don't need a discounted computer (they can pawn a designer suit if need be)), b=education folk, c=other folk.

you people all need to realize that this student discount is meant for students so they can purchase a computer because they are already going broke from paying for their college tuition.

Average Private 4-year tuition ≈ 30,000 $/yr
Average Public 4-year tuition ≈ $6,000 $/yr

A couple hundred dollars savings on a laptop is rather insignificant in todays world. The student discount is there to reel in some long term customers. Who at one point are no longer eligible for student discounts. I assume most people already got that and coach's thought stream was clouded by the enormous array of bad late night television.

Yeah, it has to be said, Apple is in the business of making money! They aren't out there to be nice, or they would be terrible business people. Look at it like bryank89 said, us students who buy mac's now will hopefully be converted to mac's forever, and buy many more subsequent models. Now, the 15% discount they gave us (or whatever it is) seems so insignificant compared to the next 50 years of buying full price macs from them!

And as for big business' getting huge discounts, of course they do, if they buy in bulk apple can afford to discount. And also, apple wanna get there product everywhere. It's exactly the same way as famous people get free stuff, it advertises the brand.

I agree it sucks, but until i'm famous i will just have to live with it!

I just wanted to add in (and I just wrote this in another thread as well) that my wife is a teacher at a small private school that isn't listed in Apple's web listing for our zipcode. However we were able to go to the Apple Store and purchase with her discount by showing them her paystub. Just a head's up in case other people are in a similar situation.

But at the same time, wouldn't giving the occasional discount to others also make them more prone to being 'long term' customers? Just playing devil's advocate.

I think the educational discount would be playing the "get 'em while they're young" game specifically...
