I went to finder pref's (a new one on me) and ticked Hard Discs. I've now got two discs showing on my desktop: I then went to Disc Utility and have put up the Discs that show there, apart from the Aura Pro X2 and Container Disc.

OK, that means Data 2 is NOT merged with the Macintosh HD volume. You should see /Users on the Macintosh HD, which actually is Data 1. So if you are ok with what is in the /Users/<<you>> folder, you can use DU to remove Data 2.

Well I've taken the bit between me teeth and dunnit. :) Everything seems to still be working OK, so I'm hopeful that the problem is gone. Thanks all for the help.
