HDMI Connection to TV from MacBook Pro worked, now doesn't

I have a mid-2010 MBP 2.4 GHz and am connected to a Sharp 52 inch LCD TV (Model#LC-52SB57UN). I purchased a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Female Adapter Cable for Apple Macbook Pro from OEM Planet (Amazon) back in June and connected it to the TV with a 15 foot HDMI cable. The set up was working fine until yesterday. As suggested, I have rebooted, reconnected, tried different HDMI cables and ports and am open to other thoughts. The computer acts like it knows there is another display (ie the computer display transitions and the Sharp HDMI Display is available in System Preferences), but there is no picture on the TV. Now I am thinking it's the Adapter that has gone bad (a few days ago it began to seem loose in the mini display port (made crackly noises every time I connected it to the computer) - any ideas?

You could try a SMC reset - don't really think it's going to do anything since you're actually seeing the Sharp in Displays preferences.

Based on what you've tried thus far, I'd personally be ordering a new mdp to hdmi adapter. Have a list of recommended adapters in the second half of post #4.

Power Mac G4 connect to Sony Bravia LCD TV

Hello,

I have recently been given an old Power Mac G4, 400MHz/1M Cache, DvD-V 64MB RAM, HD 20GB (I know low specs I mainly just wanna learn about macs) and I am trying to use my Sony Bravia KDL 26v4000 as monitor. The TV is 26 inches, and is 720p.

The Power Mac has an ADC port and a VGA port. I have tried to use a VGA monitor cable to connect it all up, but when connected computer starts up for a bit, comes up with "Mac OS 9.1" etc.

But after I assume that it is going to the desktop the picture goes out of range and there isn't anything else I can do.
A friend said that it may be the setup on the mac that is wrong. Also I thought maybe its the video card.

I don't know whether if I need to use an ADC to VGA adapter or what.

I am a complete novice when it comes to Macs so any information anyone can tell me is great.

Thank you in advance

You'll need a MDP to HDMI adapter that supports audio and a high speed HDMI cable.
You can check post 4 for some recommended adapters.

Geoff

I don't have a clue. Have never touched a PPC Mac, much less one that is running OS 9 and don't really have any inclination to either.

I would think trying to learn Macs with a machine running OS 9 would be sort of like trying to learn Windows 7 by playing with Win 3.1. e.g. not worth the time.

Maybe someone else will come along with some troubleshooting tips for you. If it was me and the VGA didn't work - it'd be time for ebay or the trash.

Missing something... what else can I try?

Ok, I don't know what I'm missing...

New iMac 2011, bought the following...
HDMI cable and a mini display port to HDMI Adapter
I also have an Audio cable (from a previous setup: laptop to tv)

I connect the HDMI to iMac and TV and get my mirrored image like I want but I get no sound.

I plugged in the audio cable...still no sound will come out of the TV.

On my old 2006 MBP I was able to get sound out of the tv with no problems and was also able to adjust the sound (on the laptop) through the apple remote.

I referenced the post about sound but my preferences do not list anything about a display port adapter sound choice....only headphones.

Now I can get sound from my iMac but I would prefer that it comes through the TV. So perhaps this external cable I have for sound won't work on my iMac?

I tried with the cable and without... nothing works.

What am I missing?

My guess would be that you have one of the old mdp to HDMI adapters that do not support audio. What adapter do you have? Link would be good unless it's one of the adapters I have listed in post # 4.

Did you select headphones while the audio cable was attached?

You're using the same audio cable and both the HDMI and audio cable are plugged into the same ports on the TV you used with the old Mac?

The mdp to HDMI adaptor was bought brand new today at "Talk to the Mac" an apple dealer here.

I told him I had a brand new iMac and an LCD HiDef 42" tv with HDMI. He gave me a...... "newertechonolgy" Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adaptor (for laptops and desktop computers... works with: MB MBP MBA iMac Mac Mini Mac Pro.

I was hooked up fine through my MBP (2006).

And yes to your last question. I plugged that into the only spot available to it (or where it was with the laptop), and behind the iMac in the headphones hole... I also tried the other little hole too... no goodah! So... I dunno....

I tried WITH and withOUT the audio cable. So... should I bring that back and say... doesn't give me sound?

The NewerTechnology should be the one OWC is selling and I would think that it should work. (Don't know if they had a 1st gen adapter without audio support or not - the current one they have does support audio.) Yep, I'd try an exchange to see if you just happened to get a bad adapter.

But, does the audio work if you select the headphones while the audio cable is plugged in? What brand TV?

The tv brand is a Soniq (Australia) dunno if that brand is in the states or not. Fairly popular here.

Well Ch!t! That's what I was doing wrong..... LOL!!! I went to preferences after plugging in the audio cable and saw the Soniq TV show up in the sound preferences... funny that!! So that's what I had to do I guess? Select that option. When I unplugged the cable and went to Sound, of course it's not gonna show up!! DOH!!

So I'm guessing now that the MDA isn't audio capable... ah well. Atleast it works.

Thanks for the help....

If you've got the option to select the TV and have that one selected with the sound working, unplug the audio cable and see if the audio stops or continues.

The Soniq selection should only be there via the mdp. The headphone jack shouldn't list the TV as an option.

OS 9 works with an external VGA monitor, OS X (eg. Panther) also. In both cases you will need a third-party (eg. Sonnet) VGA video card, which your old G4 appears to have installed (your G4 has no native external display facility). I have a G3 b/w 350 MHz machine, dual OS 9 & X, operating via a VGA card and monitor.

Essentially though, you're using old technology, and that with limited specs, eg. the minimum RAM, as you've outlined. I don't enjoy saying it, but you're on a road to nowhere. You'll need to use much more modern and powerful hardware to achieve what you're trying to do.

Ok then just out of interest it would it be worth getting a new logic board, so then I can at least get a better processor, and be able to put more RAM on to it also. Just because after looking around on internet the highest I could get it to would be 2 gb. Or is the machine just too old to try and make it much better.

Thanks.

Need help on wires please

I tried to figure it out but I got a headache.. Please help, thank you!

1. What Mac do you have? Personally, I prefer to have the year, model and processor speed. Example: 2008 iMac 2.8, 2006 Mac Mini 2.0, or 2009 MBP 2.6.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008) (CTO)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

2. What TV do you have? This means make and model #. A link to your owners manual (not the spec sheet) would be helpful. But, if you can't find it, still provide your model # and we'll try to work from there.

I have two TVs. The first one is samsung LN-S4095D and the Second one is HL-S5086W

TV One: Samsung 40" LCD TV LN-S4095D Owner's Manual / User Guide and Other Product Manuals - product4me.com

TV Two: Samsung HL-S5086W 50" DLP Projection TV Owner's Manual / User Guide and Other Product Manuals - product4me.com

3. Where do you want the sound? On the TV, a stereo, a 5.1 A/V receiver? If you want it someplace other than the TV, you'll need to provide the make and model of that piece of equipment also.

Sound on TV Please

ddrfire:

The 40":
Manual specifically states it does not support a PC through it's HDMI ports. If it were me, I'd still try it. Since I'm spending your money - use the VGA port.

You need a DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA cable - adapter - cable.
For audio, you need a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug cable - link.

They both get plugged into the number 8 inputs shown on page 5 of the manual.

The 50":
Once again, Manual specifically states their HDMI is not compatible with a PC.

You'll need exactly the same adapter/cables - see page 12 in the manual - plug in to numbers 9 & 10.

You should be all set for under $10 or get two of each and leave them attached to each TV.

Hi - I was hoping someone could help me out before i pull my hair out :p have tried working through all the stages in post 2 to no avail - my macbook is recognising the tv but the tv isnt picking up on the macbook (no display at all) I am trying to connect via a minidisplay port, NEET converter and a VGA cable. I have tried the different display resolutions, tried switching off and powering up in different orders, rejigged the cables several times and looked in vain for a setting in the tv menu that might fix things. the cables work with my monitor at work......

many thanks in advance

Providing the ports you have on the TV will only allow for a "best guess", it would not allow us to provide a "definitive and specific" recommendation.

(If you just can't figure out what model you have, you may provide the name of every input port on the back of the TV and we can make a best guess. You should provide the name as they are labeled on the set or post a pic where those labels show up good enough to be read.

wolfandwavey:

You did pick up the remote for the Sony and press the Input button (the one at the top next to the power button) to change it to the VGA input?

I'd try 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 768, 1360 x 768 and 60hz.

There shouldn't be a resolution there with an i next to it, but if there is, don't pick it - for sure that will not work.

If a no go and since the exact same adapter & cable work on another monitor (right now - not the last time you tried it 3 months ago), I'd try a SMC reset.

If that doesn't work, then I'd probably get myself a mdp to hdmi cable for attaching to that Sony. And have to set the Screen Format to Wide and Display Area to Full Pixel. Probably just because I have not personally used anything VGA in well over 10 years.
