I’ve recently purchased a 250gb Samsung 850 evo and I’ve put it in a usb 3 enclosure to use as my new boot drive for my iMac late 2011.

I’ve only used 100gb on my 1tb internal hard drive and I’ve been running carbon copy cleaner for 12 hours now and it’s only copied 20gb.

Is there anything that I can do to speed it up? I’m running the latest version of carbon copy cleaner trial version.

You can try contacting the developer at the website for CCC. He's pretty responsive.

Just realized, USB 2.0 ports in your 2011 iMac.

Also, did you format the drive before using CCC?

Your iMac has 4 USB 2.0 ports. While USB 3.0 is backwards compatible to USB 2.0 the speed is going to slow down to the standard USB 2.0 which is 480 Mbits. And I believe there may even be some incompatibility between that Samsung SSD and the enclosure.

Why don't you just open up your iMac and replace the 7200 RPM spinner drive with the Samsung? Instructions for getting inside and doing the work at www.ifixit.com.

I didn't want the hassle of opening up the iMac, I realise not having usb 3 ports would hurt performance but the ssd drive speed is just a bit higher than usb 2 maximum speed so I wasn't too fussed about lack of usb 3. I wonder if a fresh install of OS X on the drive using recovery and moving over documents and photos using finder after the install would be quicker than cloning the drives? It looks like it will take about two/three days at this rate.

Opening up your iMac is easy since it uses the older style magnetic clips and is not glued together like the newer ones. I know, because I had the exact same model as you now have before I gave it to my granddaughter.

By installing that Samsung in place of the spinner, you'll wind up with a new fast iMac. Add some more memory, and you'll be good for a few more years. Why don't you look at the instructions at www.ifixit.com?

To answer your question above... no, reinstalling macOS isn't going to make a difference and might only bring about other problems.

Is your version of CarbonCopyCloner the full paid for version?

The free version is nowhere near as fast as Mr Bombich, like all of us, needs to put food on the table.

i think I said late 2011, I checked about my mac it says late 2012 so I must have gotten the year mixed up, it's a shame it's glued together, didn't realise macs were so terrible for upgrades until it was too late :(

Yeah the carbon copy cloner is a trail version, I'm only using it just this once. If the trial version is indeed slower then that would explain the slow speeds.

The Trial version of CCC is fully functional and just as fast as the paid for version and may be used for 30 days. CCC is not your problem.

Since you now have a 2012 iMac instead of a 2011, opening it up is out of the question as it's glued together. And since the ports on a 2012 iMac are USB 3, there must be something else going on. Also, your iMac has TB ports. My guess is your Samsung EVO SSD is not compatible with that enclosure which is what might be causing the slowdown.

+1, and I fully agree.

Also, we use CCC and all with USB 2.0 ports and a first full clone of aprox 120±GB to spinner backup drives takes just over one hour, but using FW or Thunderbolt ports and the incremental weekly backups take about 10 - 15 minutes.

Something else is definitely wrong with the OP's setup.

Lots of folks buy enclosures for their external hard drives. The problem is that not all enclosures are the same which is why I suspect his USB 3 enclosure may be the cause of his slowdown problem. First of all, those Samsung EVO SSDs have been known to cause trouble when installed in some MacBook Pros. I might be wrong but the USB 3 enclosure he's using with that Samsung SSD might not be compatible.

If the enclosure is the problem, is there a list of enclosures that would be compatible with the 850 evo?

If not I may consider fire wire or thunderbolt but I don’t really know how I’d set that up with the evo, I’ve only ever seen usb 3 enclosures.

Ps I live in the uk so some suggestions I might not be able to buy :)

Administrator chscag is on the right track.

With your Samsung SSD a USAP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) is required according to some threads. These enclosures are up to 70% faster than USB SSD's when used as an external hard drive. Something to do with the 6Gb/ps not working well externally when not connected via SATA. Have a read of this link and as your iMac is a 2012 model, it comes with USB3 so that will be great.
