Administrator chscag is on the right track.

With your Samsung SSD a USAP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) is required according to some threads.

Interesting and yet another Protocol added to the list for the user to be concerned with. Onwards we must go I guess…

And an interesting read and it seems I'll have to go back and read the whole thing:

Just to say I ordered a UASP enclosure from Amazon and it’s working like a treat! Thank you to everyone who gave their input, my Mac is blazing fast now, better than new ?

OK, nice, but for some info for the future, which UASP enclosure brand/model worked and which one didn't with that SSD????

Again I’m from UK so it might not be too relevant to US customers but I originally bought a DYNAMODE 2.5" USB 3.0 SATA enclosure without UASP. The Samsung 850 evo didn’t work well at all with it (took me three days to clone 92gb of data over usb 3) I then got a Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 enclosure with UASP from Amazon. I’m getting 450 read and 400 write straight out of the box.

The original enclosure would take six to eight minutes to boot and Mac OS was practically unusable, the UASP enclosure took thirty seconds to boot and is rapid in use.

Looking back I think the main issue was the 850 evo not being compatible with non UASP enclosures or just that specific enclosure but I’d definitely recommend a UASP enclosure for the 850 evo, Mac OS X never felt better ?

From other threads Samsung are not the easiest SSDs to work with as the SATA III causes compatability problems, and this is more pronounced in pre 2010 Macs.

Pleased things worked out well in the end.
