On MacBook Air M4, Sequoia 15.4, the log in password hint was not showing up after unsuccessful tries to enter a password. Apparently, what ever turns on the hint after 3 tries failed. Apple has an article instructing one to go to System Settings-Users & Groups and click "Change Password" to add the hint. One must enter the old password and a new one.

Oddly, when I do that I get the error that Passwords Do Not Match. Of course they do not match since I'm entering the old password and a new password.
After many tries, I restarted the computer and entered the old password and a brand new one. Again I got the error that the passwords do not match. (They shouldn't, should they?)

I even tried copying and pasting my password in the old and the new boxes. Again- The do not match error.

Do any of you know how I can successfully add a password hint when someone mis-types the password 3 times? (And successfully change password if ever needed.)

I apologize if this is easy. I'm brand new to MacOS.

Paul

You have to type the old password, then the new one, then the new one again where it says 'Verify' - as you haven't typed anything in Verify, that's why they don't match.

I agree that they should use a different word to make it easier to use for new Mac users.

Thanks MacBiter very much. It worked great.

I apologize that it was easy. So easy, in fact, that I didn't understand the article from Apple.

Thanks Again!

The idea of verifying the password is a good one, it ensures you actually entered the new password you intended but sadly the wording of the instructions is a bit unclear, as is often the case. Glad you got it sorted.👍🏼
