Yep, I gave Airmail up when they switched to a subscription based business model but prior to then I was very happy with it as an email client and I believe it still handles POP3 accounts.

Worth having a look at BlueMail too, I believe the last version for macOS is a big improvement and it will handle any mail account including POP3 and Exchange accounts on both desktop and mobile devices.

Nor for me at US$75 p.a. and with undesirable privacy features:-

https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/5grsan

Not doubting your source here even though its four years old but I have Spark as an email client across all my devices and I am not subscribed to Readdle in any financial way. Both the desktop version and the mobile versions were free. If you subscribe to the more team orientated Premium version it costs $6.39 per active team member per month.
As for the security angle, well some of that is news to me and some is not. It's true I do get a newsletter occasionally so they certainly have my email address but that's not unusual, so did Airmail by Bloop.
I did not know about Google Analytics, Facebook Analytics and Amplitude collecting and analysing my data so that's interesting, good to know about this stuff.

Just for comparisons sake here is the Privacy Policy for BlueMail and I suspect most third party email clients would have similar conditions and policies. https://bluemail.me/privacy/
I'd be interested to know who the author on Reddit (the Kovah) would recommend.

The Privacy Policy for apps that appear in the Mac App Store (Mac and iOS) have been mandated by Apple to warn users of any tracking.

Agreed, in particular apps like web browsers and email clients but it is a very recent development (14/12/20). That's where I got my data on BlueMail.

Just being the devils advocate here but for those people who have a suitable MS 365 subscription, which I understand a lot of people do, I should mention that MS Outlook is available for macOS and free for iOS and iPadOS.
I don't have a 365 subscription but I do have a @live. com email account and I have tried the current version of Outlook on the iPhone with that and it's a pretty polished act with some interesting features.
These days email filtering is all the rage lots of email clients are offering variations of this; Spark sorts mail into four categories with it's optional "Smart" Inbox, Outlook has just two "Focused" and "Other" it uses and algorithm to learn which is which. They both have forms of quick or automatic replies.
What I don't know is if Outlook can cope with POP3 accounts.

I think that the thing that most folks don't like about Airmail is that it is subscription-only.

Not only that, but they recently updated it to pester you relentlessly if you don’t subscribe. Even to legacy users like myself who paid for it in the past before they went to the subs model. ?

When you say recently. I was and had been a user of Airmail for years, virtually since it's first release and on all my devices. I suddenly got a sticker bottom left of iOS screens saying I had to update to their new pay as you go model to get the sticker removed. See; https://www.macrumors.com/2019/07/15/airmail-subscription-based-pricing/

Naturally I was incensed and contacted Bloop about it as did many other users. After some industry outrage abdvavfew articles online they offered previous users the legacy version for no additional cost (but no updates) and conceded to remove the sticker on the iOS version but by that time I had dumpted them. What I'm curious about is this was about 2 years ago. Are you saying this is still going on?

I don't have the iOS version anymore since notifications NEVER worked properly in it. I use the desktop version still though, which I had paid for twice at least, because it has a great rules feature that lets me filter incoming email and automatically trash unwanted ones and even send fake "bounce" return notices to try and get me off spam lists. It can run in the menubar only, which is what I really like, so it effectively works as a background server. Since they went the freemium model, periodic nags have been a problem, but I don't think they were even so much as a daily one. Maybe just on first launch? But a few weeks ago, a new update was put out and now nags are on-screen every couple hours and it obscures everything until you get rid of it. It's not pretty.

Recent Airmail reviews show that long time users are dissatisfied with the new subscription method and the overall attitude of the developers.

When a good app turns to nagware, that's the time to get rid of it and to let developers know why.

I've seen the same thing occur over the years I used Windows. An app turning into nagware because the developers got greedy trying to extract more $$ from users.

By the way, stats have shown that most users dislike subscribing to an app. I realize developers put time and money into developing an app and must comply with Apple's rules and continually upgrade to keep pace with the growing technology. I would rather pay for the upgrades than subscribe, but that's just my opinion.

I'm currently subscribed to MS 365 (Office 365) but I will not resubscribe when this sub period has ended.

Getting fed up with Apple Mail (Search not working, constantly forgetting my hotmail password ...) so looking for recommendations for an email client that can handle POP email as well as IMAP as my ISP's email is POP only. Cheap is good, free would be better.

did you ever get sorted out with finding something to replace apple mail??
I think my emails are IMAP but not sure!!

I have gmail accounts currently being read via Apple Mail. I am getting fed up with gmail also.
I want to change to another FREE server... mayb GMX, Proton, Tutanota, or Mail box. I set up accounts in these for testing and find lot of Ads come thru.. of course cuz they are free!
AND tried adding some emails to them and were rejected and dont understand the explanations nor how to fix it.

am still working on finding the right one for me.... dont want to notify all contacts of change until I am sure it is going to work for me.

wonder what you have worked out.

Be careful when changing email providers. Changing one's email address nowadays is even more difficult and annoying than when changing your actual physical address.

At least when changing your physical address, the Post Office will forward mail for a period of time. Email providers do not always forward email properly.

Besides the above, changing your email address will also impact your dealings with Apple and possibly your Apple ID which can be a big headache.

thnx for the tip. my Apple ID would not be changed at all. and dealing with APPLE, I can always contact them and provide a different email... which I have done in the past.

as far as choosing a new email provider...im checking into some to see what they look and act like. will do a few tests with some in my contact list.

tho before I change anything with utilities, banking etc... I certainly will make sure all is working well before I do that.

in the meantime, I need to stay with my old YUCK gmail.

I've been using gmail for well over 15 years and have never had a problem with them. I also have Verizon mail and iCloud. Verizon is my backup.

Just an update. My ISP (Zen - provider of my one POP3 email service) advises that there is not a problem with their server and if BlueMail cannot handle it then to find another mail client. BlueMail have not responded other than to say I should contact my ISP. If anyone on this site uses both BlueMail and Zen I've love to know who they got them working together.

I'm actually happy with all my email providers which are used for distinct and separate purposes (two stage verification; to give to websites/ companies that insist on an email but which I do not want to communicate further; as a Facebook email (so I Iknow that any other 'Facebook' email on any other service is a scam); for work purposes, for my (separate) business, PayPal, etc. Not forgetting my Apple ID which is an email address I now longer use but cannot change so forced to keep. I do not wish to use any 'Smart' forwarding functionality as these do not work with any consistency... and don't get me started on Junk Mail filters which are just as inconsistent.

I quite like Apple Mail but it's driving me mad not being able to get the Search function working. I managed to get it working last year following various advice from Apple/Google etc but it stopped after only a short while and just gives a 'No Mail Selected' message to every search.

MS Outlook, suggested by Rod, is ruled out as it requires MacOS 14 or above and I can only get to 13.6 on my 2011 iMac.

Say again... you're last transmission is somewhat garbled. In other words, what did you really mean to say?

sorry.... didnt mean to send a garbled message .....
you had suggested for me to be careful with changing email servers, could have issues with apple id and contacting apple.

i just meant that my Apple ID will not be changing. I can always contact Apple and provide a new email address – I've done that in the past.

i'm just wanting to change my email address and pull away from gmail/google.. tho that it's proving challenging to find a replacement!

It was member "Sawday's" last post that was somewhat garbled not yours. :)
