Another forum that I drop in on once in awhile had the same rumor posted. Speculation on the price was also mentioned and how small the screen fonts would appear on a display with that high a resolution. If Apple goes that route, my bet is they will still offer the iMac with a standard display in addition to one with a retina.

What was the speculated price?

Price speculation seemed to vary anywhere from $2500 to $3000. I'm thinking the $2500 price would probably be too low considering the 15" rMBP sells for $2499. You're better at pricing than most folks, what do you think?

Sorry..I guess my question was misunderstood. I thought that the other forum you visited posted a different article...and that article had a speculated price in it.

I think that you're right though. The 15" retina MBP would be our best price benchmark. And like you mentioned above...I'm thinking that Apple could do three things:

1. Lower end 27" iMacs would be be similar to what is offered now (regular display)...better price.
2. Retina display only available on higher end units with faster cpu's & better gpu's. Really high price.
3. It would be interesting if Apple could be flexible...and allow custom configuration of the retina display on any 27" iMac.:)

The most expensive stock configuration 27" iMac at the moment is $1999. I could see a $2500-$2799 price for a 27" retina iMac (with similar specs to the current high end iMac). This would be a price bump of $500-$799 over the current high-end 27" iMac. Maybe enough to pay for the 27" retina display.

Much more than this...and folks might as well get a low-end Mac Pro ($2999)!;)

And of course...if Apple comes out with a 27" retina iMac...how long can it be before we see a 27" retina Thunderbolt Display!:)

YIKES...how much would this puppy cost if the current 27" Thunderbolt Display is $999!

It's good to keep in mind that this is a rumour. The cost for a 27-inch Retina iMac would be outrageous, which makes me doubt this. Stil, there will be clear signs if it's true ... Like a severe shortage of high-Rez displays for anyone else.

Ignoring the price, any graphics might be great but my old eyes would have trouble with the reported resolutions with anything else I'd suspect...

"... As for the resolution of the new Retina iMac, OS X Yosemite betas include references to 6400 x 3600, 5760×3240, and 4096×2304 resolution screens. Apple has been rumored to be working on a 5K iMac display for launch later this year, so perhaps that’s the direction Apple will take, and a recently introduced DisplayPort standard update could make this a reality. From that same AppleInsider piece
The report also claims that the new iMac will be able to be configured with an Intel i7-4790K processor clocked at 4.0 gigahertz. That's a current-generation Haswell processor, as Intel's next-generation Broadwell processors are not expected to be available until early 2015.

I've been waiting a while to upgrade my 24" 2008 iMac, I don't buy often, but when I do I go large. Still, now I'm wondering whether I'd be better off holding out until a Broadwell version comes out next year.

Will Broadwell bring a significant improvement over Haswell? It's been 6 years since I last upgraded, what's another 6 months? I'd also then have the benefit of seeing how these new displays perform with the AMD GFX Card before buying :)

I'm not clear or understand how Apple does its purchasing and marketing, but I really wonder how they will keep the price of such an iMac to a reasonable, but no doubt expensive model without basically almost giving away the CPU and associated innards.

Both Dell and Apple get a lot of their display screens from the same suppliers and when I see Dell's 5K display monitor offering will be selling for a rumoured $2500 price tag, it's hard to know Apple will do their pricing or to get it lower or at least expensively reasonable if there is such a thing.

Or is Dell inflating their actual price for such a display...??? But it's too much for gamers it seems so that leaves some high end graphics users or ....???

It will be interesting if this rumor is true…where the final price nets out.

I think a retina Apple Display would make more sense. If you're looking for a display like that you're most likely using a high-end machine (i.e. Mac Pro). I could be wrong, but it just seems that there wouldn't be a market for a retina iMac. *shrug*

Looking at some sites, I'm wondering if Apple may just get things right with the new hi-rez iMac, and actually have the display useable for those needing vision help.

Even an old article:
http://www.ijailbreak.com/news/imac-touchscreen-concept-video/
and a more recent one:
AnandTech | Testing Improved 4K Display Support in OS X 10.9.3

But I would hope that there's a much more dramatic viewing difference that what I see between my iPad 2 with its 1024x768 (132 ppi) and my wife's iPad 3 "retina" display with 2048x1536 (264 ppi) resolution.

Well, at least text is cleaner and clearer... ;)

After reading that rumor article Nick posted, I expect to see Elvis appear at any time during the big October 16th event! :p

Does this mean you still have your doubts??;) I guess we'll at least have a chance to see if the rumor is correct come Oct. 16th.:) I'm certainly not going to be in line for a 27" retina iMac (for multiple reasons). I just want to see what it costs.

Plus the latest rumor article mentioned something about the rumored retina iMac's possibly having a new cpu that doesn't require a fan. Allowing for an even thinner iMac design.:)

- Nick

p.s. "Who's Elvis anyway??" I'm sure at some point we'll have members who may be wondering this!;) It's been 37 years. Yikes!

Yeah, I saw that about the new "fanless" CPU that Intel has come out with. That's another one that I'll believe it when I see it in an iMac. Folks forget that an iMac is nothing more than a upright notebook computer with a large built in display. I can see putting a fanless CPU in a machine like the Mac Pro where there is lots of room for air to circulate but not an iMac. But who knows what Apple will do. Anyway, it's fun speculating over the rumors. :)

So there it is $2499 for the new iMac 27, not bad I had just bought my iMac 6 months ago. I would love to buy it but I doubt the boss ( wife ) would let me, even with a good reason.
