I've been waiting for them to release these, because I sooooooo want one! But... I'm going to wait until they do a refresh of the line with the next-gen chipsets. As any long timers know, the first major revision of any Apple product is bound to be under-specced, buggy, or whatnot. My next one will be the last for a looooong time. Right now, my mid-2010 is still performing like a champ, but looks rather puny in comparison.

Also with the introduction of new technology…it is almost always expensive (large-uncommon retina display panel in this case). And as more of them are made & sold…the less expensive they will become.:)

Eventually…those of us with non-retina display computers will be the "oddballs"…and those with retina display computers will be the norm.:)

So there it is $2499 for the new iMac 27, not bad I had just bought my iMac 6 months ago. I would love to buy it but I doubt the boss ( wife ) would let me, even with a good reason.

Try $2,749.00 if you're in Canada!!! And that's the base model.

LOL, at $2500 big ones, I'll be an "oddball" for quite some time! On another note Nick, I noticed they're still carrying the previous line of iMacs (non retinas) unchanged.

I can't figure how they came up with that price in Canada? The currency exchange does not compute.

I'm always 2-3 years behind when it comes to new hardware (don't like the depreciation on new electronics). So if it takes 2-3 years for an "affordable" retina iMac...probably won't be one in my house until about 2020!;) The newest Apple computers in my place are from 2011 (and no real plans on getting anything newer either).;)

Yeah...I think that the only change in the iMac linup is the intro of the 27" retina model.

Actually doing a dollar exchange at todays rate says $2,499.00usd = $2,812.75cdn.

So I guess we geta sort of a deal. :D

Australian Dollars, Canadian Dollars, and US Dollars, etc...have nothing in common except for the word "dollar". These are just "labels" for the currency.

Each country's currency could just as well be called:

- US Widget's
- Canadian Sprockets
- Australian Astro's

The exchange rate is the important part.

- Nick

p.s. I'm sure some folks will get the fake currency naming scheme!;)

I remember back in my Air Force days when I was stationed in Quebec at a Canadian RCAF-USAF radar site (NORAD) the US $ was only worth $.95 compared to the "funny money" (as we used to call it). I always liked the pretty colors used for your paper currency. :)

Yes...I have some. We have one dollar coins as well (Sacagawea & Susan B. Anthony).:)

Unfortunately (I guess)...the bird on the reverse of the Canadian dollar coin is a Loon...so it's a "Loonie"!lol;)

Mmmmm.... nope. Not here. If it was supposed to be a Jetsons reference, that probably should have been "US Cogs".

Up till now I haven't been particularly interested in the iMac, but now I'm with LB and will probably pick one up at the CPU refresh.

Just curious…what has changed in the situation?:)

- Nick

Aging eyes and retina monitor. I'd end paying that for a similar monitor by itself right now. This way the built-in computer is a freebie.

EDIT: I'm planning for retirement next year and steadily building my photography kit. In the plan was a better monitor.

I hear ya.;) 1920 x 1200 on my 17" MBP is pretty small as well.

Didn't you say something about getting all your gear together for retirement like 2 years ago. You may need a whole new set of "gear" by the time you retire (with the way "gear" becomes obsolete so quickly)!;)

Just upgraded bodies this year, so I'm good for several years. Finishing out on lenses and such, and was going to polish up my workstation as a last step. Photography isn't a cheap hobby, which is why I am taking about 3 years to acquire my gear.
